CheckBook Pro 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Checkbook Pro hits the sweet spot on features; neither crippled nor bloated. I don't want a "financial management suite" full of 3D budget graphs that make me feel guilty. I just want to avoid bouncing checks and also have a general idea whether I can afford a new iPhone. This app does the job. It's fast, pretty, and easy to learn. I used Quicken for many years and had no serious complaints with it, even running under Rosetta, but I got tired of waiting for a native version, and it's ugly. I didn't rate the support or documentation for Checkbook, because I've never needed either. [alert admin]

EyeConnect 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
Eye Connect recognized my PS3 immediately and automatically. It forwards my iTunes playlists, iPhoto Albums, and movies with no hassle whatsoever. Movie playback is limited to the formats recognized by the PS3, mostly WMV (enabled through system settings on the PlayStation) and MPEG-4. You may need to fuss with the codec used for the MPEG (see the advanced settings in iMovie), but it does indeed work. You can copy media files to the hard drive on the PlayStation. EyeConnect even sees files on an optical disk or outboard hard drive on the Mac. 15" MacBook Pro, Leopard. [alert admin]

TextExpander 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)
This little utility is worth the purchase price just for its ability to insert an ISO 8601-compliant date. Also useful for avoiding "pubic" when you mean "public". The developer responds promptly to inquiries and seems like a reasonable guy. I haven't bothered to read all the griping by the cheapskate below. If you want to type out everything you want to say: do that If you want to save yourself some trouble, buy Textexpander. [alert admin]

Second Life 1.13.3.2 (Mac OS X)
Second Life is pretty reasonable on the 2.33GHz 15" MacBookPro with ATI 1600 running 10.4.8. I'm getting a reliable 40 FPS through my cable modem and can get it up to 80 FPS, if need be, by turning off eye candy. Yes, the system is prone to hacks and slowdowns. So is life. [alert admin]

Second Life 1.12.1.13 (Mac OS X)
Reasonable, as These Things Go
Runs OK on a G4 Dual 1GHz with ATI 9800. I can even squeak by with my 867MHz 12" G4 PB for a quick visit without moving around much. The little guy runs really hot while doing SL, though. The ATI can only pull about 13 FPS even off a good cable modem connection. It's fine for chatting, walking around, and building, but don't plan on mixing it up with guys - and there are plenty of them - getting 50 FPS. Performance sucks in crowds of more than ten or so, but that's SL's fault, not your Mac's. [alert admin]

GraphicConverter X 5.8.2 (Mac OS X)
There appears to be no letdown in Thorsten Lemke's dedication and responsiveness. I encountered a minor scanning bug, alerted him, and received a couple of betas and a solution within a few days. You rarely see this kind of hustle for a product as well-established as Graphic Converter. For some purposes (PaperPort conversion, for example) it's the only show in town, yet Thorsten continues to work hard. Mac shareware at its best. [alert admin]

AlchemyTV DVR 2.4.1 (Mac OS X)
According to Activity Monitor, Alchemy sucks up 30% the cycles on my twin 1-GHz G4 running 10.4.5, so I close the TV window when I'm not watching TV. It drops down to 0% then. I would quit the app altogether, but it can be pickly about starting up when other apps have been running: it wants to be first after boot, so sometimes a reboot is necessary. I haven't done a clean install in years and my system is no doubt filled with junk, so the pickiness is probably my fault. Overall, the card and the app are a lot of fun and include an astonishing number of features for such a niche market. [alert admin]

Deja Vu 3.2.1 (Mac OS X)
I agree with JoBoy. It's hard to see how either the product or the support could get much better. More features, yes, but not much better. A little better, maybe: I'm giving four stars for ease of use because I'd like to be able to drag files to the backup list rather than trudge through an open/close box. I've been using Deja Vu for several years and the only problems I've had were largely of my own making. Even so, the developer responded promptly to my inquiries, and solved the problem. What I particularly like about Deja Vu is that it doesn't hide the backup in some arcane archive that only it can open. It just copies whatever files you want whereever and whenever you specify. This is a very handy for all sorts of reasons besides backing up. I have no affiliation with Deja Vu other than as a satisfied customer. [alert admin]

Skooby Renamer 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Trashing the preferences file fixed it. Presets survived. Nice app. Photos go from the memory card to a desktop folder, then to Skooby for inspection, culling, and renaming, then to iPhoto. Very tidy. [alert admin]

4.0.3 installed and runs just fine on 10.3.8 for me, but I couldn't find the promised AvantGo conduit. The installer relocated my MAL conduit to the inactive Conduit folder bit didn't replace it with anything in the Active Conduit folder. I checked the Missing Sync application folder, but there was no Avant Go conduit there. Mysterious. Oh well, good ol' MAL still delivers the goods.
