Apple has hit an incredible home-run with this firmware update. I'm loving this update for my first generation (EDGE) iPhone. On Friday, I posted about the difficulties I had with activation and activation; however, by 2:00 p.m. when Apple and AT&T got their stuff together, I was able to get the phone up and running. Since then, I haven't looked back. I love the new iPhone applications. I'm particularly pleased with the OmniFocus and Everote applications. Apple's Remote iPhone application, is a very cool way to control my Apple TV. "Push" with my MobileMe account is working well for me. I only wish other email services offered "push" for the iPhone. I've been impatiently waiting for this updater since last Thursday morning when it was "supposed" to come out. It has finally arrived. The updater runs through your system (Leopard only) and changes all .Mac references and the like to MobileMe. After the update, you'll be sent to a page that walks you through a few additional steps (you need to re-sync to MobileMe and activate "push" for your MobileMe account on the iPhone or iPod Touch). Here is the link: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/setup/ The push feature is working great on both my iPhone and my girlfriend's iPod Touch. I don't use more than one computer, so I can't speak to the sync features for multiple computers, but the over-the-air sync to my iPhone is working great. [alert admin]

Apple iPhone 2.0 (Mac OS X)
Goodness. Maybe it is due to the heavy load on the iTunes Store, but ... WOW ... this was an inelegant installation. I had to click the "Check for Update" button a couple of times before the 2.0 availability appeared. Then, I clicked "Download and Install" ... and nothing happened. I then clicked, "Check for Update" and the 2.0 update wasn't available. Finally, after a few more clicks, I got the update to download. After the firmware was updated, I got a message that there was an error contacting the iTunes store, so the phone wouldn't activate. A few disconnect/reconnect-the-iPhone-to-the-computer later, the iPhone finally activated and is now in the process of restoring my media files. It's no big deal ... just a hassle. Not typical of Apple. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 9.0 (Mac OS X)
When you reach the Adobe Reader 8.1.2 download page, click "Different language or operating system?" and chose the proper OS version. Choosing the Mac 10.4.11 - 10.5.4 OS options will allow you to download version 9. Hope that helps. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.5.4 (Mac OS X)
I just installed Leopard on several MacBooks and MacBook Pros. I've had no problems with this update. Let me make a suggestion. This is very likely 98% overkill, but it always works like a charm when updating the system software on my Macs. I hope this suggestion helps: I download the entire combo updater from the Apple-->Support-->Download page (I know this is overkill, but the combo updaters always seem to cause fewer complications). Then, I repair permissions. I restart with Safe Boot mode (hold down the shift key when restarting). Install the combo updater. Restart the system. Repair permissions, and then restart again. Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.1 (Mac OS X)
Over the last two days, I installed Office 2008 on three additional computers (I already had it installed on my MacBook Pro). The installations and subsequent updates (including 12.1.1) went without a hitch. While I think Microsoft could have a better job with some of the launch-time issues and getting the code to be more streamlined, the "sky is falling" reviews being posted here don't make sense. I hope these instructions help: I simply downloaded all relevant updates from the Mactopia web site, repaired permissions, restarted in "safe boot" mode (hold down shift key when restarting), installed the updates I downloaded earlier, repaired permissions, restarted ... No problems. [alert admin]

Lotto Sorcerer X 6.17 (Mac OS X)
This is weird. I was visiting my sister, Loretta, in Adair, Oklahoma, earlier this month. On a goof, I used Lotto Sorcerer to pick the numbers for their "Oklahoma Cash 5" game. Woopie! I was one of only 13 people to win $500 on 06/03/08. That's 13 people in the entire state! I only got 4 balls out of 5 (if I had gotten 5, I would have won $25,000--tax free). I'll keep you guys posted, but I've managed to win $1466 so far since first using this program. I've only spent $136, so I'm way ahead! Anyway, after winning, I took Loretta over to the Caboose Club for a the nicest dinner ever served in Adair! I felt like I had come into some truly "found money," and Loretta deserved a big night out after all that crazy business with her ex-boyfriend. Lotto Sorcerer paid for itself in more ways than I can count! PS, so far, I've only played the "low stakes" lotto games. I'm not sure this software is sophisticated enough for the big lotto games. Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.1 (Mac OS X)
I had no trouble installing this update. There are several good installation problem solving suggestions at the Entourage Help Blog <http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/>. I hope that helps. [alert admin]

Lotto Sorcerer X 6.17 (Mac OS X)
OMG! This love note goes out to Ancient_Boil (or whatever that guy's scrren name is) ... I used this application and bought 10 pick-5 lotto tickets. The fourth ticket won $897! Take that b*tches who don't believe. I won $897, and all I paid out was $20 for the tickets. I used this same application when I played bingo at the South Lafayette Baptist Fellowship, and I won $69 and and a dinner for 4 at the Pancake House. So, some of you "guy(turd)s" like Ancient_boil can live your lives with wives that take your money (or whatever that guy is talking about), but I'll keep on winning with Lotto Socco! [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.0 (Mac OS X)
I installed the update this afternoon. All is well thus far. Launch times are acceptable (Word is up in 4.9 seconds and Excel is up in 3.0 -- by way of comparison, Pages and Numbers both open for me in 2.1 seconds). (For reference: I'm running on a 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro with 4 GB of ram). .xlsx and .docx files open quickly. Older .xls and .doc files are a bit more sluggish to open, but their speed doesn't seem impaired once open. Sometimes after launch, Word seems to be doing some maintenance -- things respond sluggishly for several seconds after launch. I wasn't experiencing a lot of crashing before the update, so I can't speak to any improvements in that regard. There still seem to be some issues with sluggishness. Let me give an example, I work with a customer file of 40K address records, if I highlight the records in Excel 2008 and choose "Sort" the dialog box takes 5 seconds to appear. Using the same file in Excel 2004, the sort dialog box came right up -- no delay. I was hoping SP1 would improve the overall snappiness of Office 2008, but I'm not seeing the improvements as anything more then incremental. [alert admin]

If would have been more helpful if you had bothered to read my post before writing you comment. My post specifically explained the process I used. I did not download the the firmware package from any source other than Apple, and my comments related to the process I went through.

Yes. Just keep jacking around with it. Unplug the iPhone from the computer and plug it back. I *think* the deal is that the iTunes store is overwhelmed or something, and the phone can't reach the store to activate. Eventually, if you keep messing with it a bit, it will get the connection it needs to the store and the phone will come to life.

Office upgrade won't work if you've upgrade to MS Messenger 7.0
I'm not saying this is a satisfying solution, but you could bypass the auto-updater altogether. Just download the updates you need from the Microsoft Mactopia website and then install them yourself. I hope that helps.

Safari download/template bug not fixed
Hi Andres, Is this a known bug? I have no trouble downloading office documents from either web sites or as email attachments. Also, I'm not sure that a situation where Safari appends an incorrect file extension is a problem with Office 2008 (i.e., maybe there is something amiss with your client). I apologize if this is a known issue and not related to something on your system, but I just can't reproduce the trouble you are…

Yes, this guy is a special kind of crazy. Check out his post here: http://www.versiontracker.com/php/feedback/article.php?story=20080508120700896&query= Pretty insane stuff ... anyway, certainly enough to qualify the guy as a nut.

Yes. It's kind of funny--an example of how internet censorship can go astray. I think we should all start calling the software "male-member-tail" ... see if we can get around the auto-censore.

Well, just to make you feel better ... if your ISP had been blocking infected e-mails with ClamAV, you wouldn't not have been infected in the first place.

You are right, but it's really not much of a disadvantage. In most cases it is better to delete the infected file and replace it with a new copy. Of course, this can be an inconvenience if you want to remove macros from MS Office documents and use them stripped. Otherwise, it's not a big deal.

It's just a codec. It doesn't infiltrated iMovie or any other kind of file. It de-codes files in order to display them in Quicktime.

You've got something funky going on. You might try the simple stuff first. (1) Repair permissions if you have not done so and then restart your Mac. (2) Afterwards, if that doesn't fix the problem, you may want to try a reinstall J2SE 5.0 using the installer from the disk image (as opposed to Software Update).
