MKVToolNix 2.0 (Mac OS X)

An alternative?

I have used this to resurrect the sound from about 20 mkv files and it appears to have worked flawlessly. It will also allow you to extract tracks in order to build whatever composite container you like to build/use. Here's a section from the "readme."
"What is MoKgVm2DVD? MoKgVm2DVD is an application that provides the tools needed to prepare .ogm and .mkv files for use in DivX enabled DVD players. Note, this application will not allow you to play these files in non-DivX certified DVD players. When you open either of these two types of video “container” files in MokgVm2DVD, you will be presented with a list of video, audio and subtitle tracks contained in the file. Sometimes there will be enough information for you to determine what each track represents. If not, you can select a video and an audio track (and optionally a subtitle track) to preview the tracks in an mplayer window. Once you’ve determined which tracks you are interested in, you can either convert the tracks into an .avi file, or you can extract the tracks individually to manipulate in your favorite video application. Go to http://www.emmgun.com/ for more detailed information, instructions and troubleshooting."
It's not free but is worth the small amount asked just to be able to do batch processing though. [alert admin]

XviD_Codec 1.0a (Mac OS X)

Perian or XviD_Codec

If one checks the Perian website at http://perian.org/#explore one will find this thanks reference "Jérôme Cornet of FFusion and Christoph Nägeli of XviD_Codec for the AviImporter." for the use of the XviD_Codec codec. They are one and the same but this unbundled version is, of course, more up to date. [alert admin]

1Password 2.5.7 (Mac OS X)

Excellent product and support

I have been looking for a product like this since the 1980s. It always seemed that there was this paradox that did not allow for the creation and use of high-quality passwords and usernames. If you picked long and complex enough words to be secure then they were impossible to remember especially with the growing number of "membership required" sites. At a "big name" telecommunications company that I did development work for there were so many independent systems that it required that I keep a list of close to 50 machine ids with usernames and passwords. I would save this list in an encrypted file and decrypt and cut and paste as needed trying to be sure that I recorded password changes as every system had a lifetime associated with their password so that I was constantly having to come up with new password and maintaining the encrypted file. Ugh! What a nightmare. On top of that most every application also had its own username - password combination. So much time wasted! Most people eventually gave up and kept a pages of paper with this list taped to the monitor because it was such a pain to decrypt and remember to delete your clear copy after use. Then came applications that would automate the procedure but they did not integrate with the browsers so you had to be careful not to "save" an accidentally corrupted list. Well this application solves all of those problems and more! I love it. now my names are secure, I never have to worry if the list is up to date or have the fear of corrupting my good copy of the list, and I don't even have to sweat coming up with unique passwords. Even my financial info is treated in the same way. No more keep in lists of credit cards, etc. I have been using one of those "data safe" applications but the author never has improved the product in even the simplest ways, That is not the case with 1Password. updates are constantly coming along not only fixing bugs but adding features. I have found the developers to be open to suggestions and very quick to respond. The application is so intuitive that it very rarely requires me to consult documentation. Setup with the first install was so simple that I was saved the pain of entering any existing info contained in the browsers that I have used on and off over the last couple of years as it extracted from each of them any login info contained in all of them, Sorry that I've rambled on but these folks deserve praise for such a well written, maintained, and useful application coupled with excellent support and responsiveness. I definitely recommend this app highly. [alert admin]

WeatherManX 1.9.8 (Mac OS X)

Doe not display Forecast or Ext Forecast under Leopard

I am running version 1.9.8 on a iMac G5 with 1.5 GB RAM. Recently Forecasts and ext Forecasts fail to load data. I have recently upgraded to 10.5.1 Leopard but the loading problem could have started before that time. I have tried reinstalling the software to no effect. My iMac was updated from 10.4.10 rather than a clean install, Help please. We use this program often and during hurricane season here in Florida it is indispensable. [alert admin]

Captain FTP 5.0030 (Mac OS X)

Some major problems

I have to transfer tens of thousands of file of a few kB to hundreds of MB in a flawless manner (unattended). App seems to stall on upload in passive mode after about 1000 files, aborting transfer hangs application. I'll give it this, the app doesn't terminate but then again it just remains frozen. Upon connection to a remote UNIX system the app does not refresh the view automatically but must have it done manually. On 8-3-07 I was able to upload several thousands of files without a glitch then somewhere around the middle of this month, after Apple OS updates, the application has begun to exhibit the above described behavior. I have sent in error logs and descriptions before this release but I still am seeing the same problems. Anyone know why this may be? Is there a problem running in passive mode with the OS X ftp server active? Any help is welcome. [alert admin]

Firefox 2.0.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Still no styled copy paste

After something like 5 years of Gecko core bugs that do not allow styled copy and paste the bugs are finally..... STILL HERE. I'll stick to OmniWeb (yes it's not free but it at least works in this regard) or Safari. Note ALL browsers that use the Gecko rendering core have this same problem. Nice browser otherwise. acqlite 0.2.8 (Mac OS X)

Could not...

search let alone download. be trouble-shot as docs are even worse than Aquisition. 0.2.9 would not complile either. I would advise a non-java-based app if possible. [alert admin]

PTHPasteboard 4.0.5 (Mac OS X)

Do I need more???

Excellent clipboard history tool. This is something that the Mac OS has needed for a long time (Been using Mac OS since it first ran on a Apple Lisa from a boot diskette). I don't usually use anything other than the graphical interface so I cannot comment on other features but the main thing is that it stays out of my way when not needed, doesn't obscure "full screen" apps, holds a large history of styled text and other items and takes just a flick of the wrist for me to summon and a single click to paste. Other clipboard managers either get in the way (too big, or hide too much screen) or are a pain to use (just convoluted keyboard commands). Updates have been coming regularly also unlike many shareware packages I own. [alert admin]

Gecko Core bug

This, I am told from Camino development which uses the same Gecko core engine, is and has been a "bug" for as far back as I could read Bugzilla reports. Gecko does not support copy and paste for styled text and formats such as tables. Compare Safari cut and paste to any mozilla project that uses Gecko and you will see the big difference. Camino development said that there was a lack of interest in…

Move your body!

While I am very tired of waiting this long to see OS X features incorporated, in all fairness, they have posted a minimal explanation of the status of version 7 for OS X. http://www.eudora.com/betas/Looking_for_Mac_Eudora_7.html Despite this, I have had to move to a better integrated email client and unless version 7 is stellar I won't be going back.
