Moodle 1.7.1 (Mac OS X)
Moodle is an incredibly well done and well supported product. It came in at the top among our choices which included both commercial and open-source offerings. Installation is straight-forward. You must be server-savvy. The administrative, instructor and student interfaces are very clean and relatively clear so no additional documentation or training is required. Excellent set of additional customizations (activities, modules) provided at no cost by 3rd parties. Note that the basic moodle distribution is so complete that these are not necessary, merely extensions of value. Upgrading from one version to another is easy, but any customizations must be dealt with as you'd expect with this kind of system and architecture. [alert admin]

Already useful and lots of potential in this application-specfiic editor app. This could reduce the potential for errors that one might make using a general-purpose text editor. [alert admin]

Pickup Words 2.01 (Mac OS X)
Nice idea, but execution leaves quite a bit to be desired. Doesn't warrant the price being requested. [alert admin]

DeepVacuum 1.3.3 (Mac OS X)
This is a nice user-interface wrapper around GNU wget.
The primary value is its potential to save most end-users both time and effort by allowing them to bypass the details of the wget utility (understanding, configuring, scripting, etc.).
With respect to the downloaded website files, it exhibits the same behavior as wget.
Performance is comparable to other wget-based applications.
Privacy/Security Caution: I did not find a link to the DeepVacuum source code for inspection, which I was expecting in the spirit of extending functionality of GNU free software. So the usual concern regarding any application that sends information over the network applies here: Without an independent source code review, safe computing practice requires the assumption that the user's privacy and system security are compromised. Note that this does not mean maliciously so. Privacy and security defects are common results of oversights and residual software errors. (This is a compelling reason to have source code visible to the community.) The application inherits access privileges of the user running it, so a prudent assumption is that all of the files visible to that user are also visible on the network at least while the application is running and possibly afterward. Note that this caution is not specific to this application. The risk level is high because of the nature of the application and because source code is not provided. [alert admin]

Glad to hear it. I guess I just had the bad luck to acquire the software when the wrong sort of licensing was in effect. Oh well. I've already cross-graded to a competitor but wish Qdea good luck in the future.

For the record, it was because I had contacted Qdea Technical support on an earlier issue and gotten a useless response that I simply didn't bother with this problem. Their observation is right on target: typically poor responses from technical support have indeed conditioned us. When I got the useless response from Qdea tech support, I was displeased but not surprised--seeing Qdea as yet another vendor that didn't provide great support. When…
