xACT 1.62 (Mac OS X)

Better way....

I have found that the best way to deal with FLAC and iTunes is this: 1) Take the FLAC songs and drag them into the Audio CD window in Toast 2) Make sure they're in order....if they were numbered, they're in the right order. If they were alphabetical, you need to reorder them. 3) Create a disc image 4) Mount the disc image 5) Open iTunes 6) Import however you want....it'll get the song info from CDDB This assumes whole albums are being burned. If the album was contained in one file, you'll need to split it using xAct, but that's another story entirely.......(split by calling SHN Tool) [alert admin]

Syphone 0.99b11 (Mac OS X)

Abandoned.

Well, Syphone users, It seems MicroMat won't talk about the future of the product except to say they are considering the future of the product. It seems that iTunes 8.1 changed the way the database is written or something, and Syphone can no longer read it. Basically, if you update to iTunes 8.1, you won't be able to back up your iPhone texts any more until it's fixed (which it probably won't be). If anyone is interested in giving product suggestions for a COMPETITIVE product that WORKS, please leave them here. For example, the features I would most like to see are: The ability to search, The ability to export the entire database for backup It's a shame-it was a good product. Thanks. [alert admin]

Syphone 0.99b11 (Mac OS X)

Not compatible with iPhone software version 2.1

Yup. Micromat has abandoned this until they finish TechTool Pro. They haven't updated this in almost a year. They say it was originally for internal use only or some such nonsense. Anyhow, send them an email. Tell them to tell their bosses to get their acts together on this one. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 8.0 (Mac OS X)

NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

I just poked through iTunes 8.... Holy frickin' heck!!!! 1) You can't turn off links to the store from your library (looks like it might just be for currently playing/selected songs, which doesn't bother me THAT much) 2) You can't turn off show genre when browsing! 3) This is the one that kills me: YOU CAN'T SET THE SPECS FOR HOW YOU WANT YOUR MUSIC RIPPED (bit rate, normal vs. joint stereo, etc.) or not that I see anywhere. I'm finicky about my ripping settings. To not be able to control them is a personal affront to me. [alert admin]

X Lossless Decoder 20080706 (Mac OS X)

Hints

xAct does this too. Maybe the process is streamlined here though. If you want to convert a whole FLAC album, use Toast. Drag the FLAC files into Audio CD, and save as a disc image. Mount the disc image, and iTunes will pick up the Gracenote data. You can then import it just like a normal CD to your specifications. [alert admin]

Microsoft Messenger 7.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Eh......

Well, first off, let's just say that yes, I agree on some of the criticisms. It's sort of in the "too little too late" category. I do have some friends who use MSN Messenger. All of them are PC users. It comes on Windows computers, which is why my non-tech savvy friends use it. Besides, everyone has a Hotmail account, right? MSN Messenger has always been clunky, and at first it didn't even support custom emoticons. My PC user friends would say, "you can't see them?" And I'd have to give the excuse that it wasn't Apple's fault and that Microsoft didn't spend the time making apps for the Mac if they couldn't make money off of them. Then they added custom emoticons, which was cool because we didn't have to make excuses. Then all the users here had the big gripe that it didn't support video conferencing. It sounds to me like video a hard thing to get right, and I knew that their Mac development department had been dramatically reduced, so I forgave them. NOW THEY'VE ADDED IT. I haven't tried it yet because most friends have moved to Yahoo! or Skype (Yahoo has the best Smilies by far). Anyhow, yes, it still has a clunky, nearly featureless interface, and has only gotten a minor facelift. This update is nothing earthshaking. It's really the same app with video conferencing added. I had hoped for more, but I'll take it (I mean it's free, right?) Kudos to the Mac development team for having patience to deal with the corporate Microsoft management teams—it must be a tough sell to keep working on an app for a platform that's eating their lunch (and part of their dinner too). Look—it sure would be nice to have a better Mac app, but I guess it's better than nothing. Long & short of it: •The video conferencing (assuming it works) is a welcome addition. •The feature set is poor (I've only briefly seen the Windows version, but it has a few features that don't seem like they would be that hard to implement. •The interface & look are still clunky. •I thank the Mac development team for their efforts (although it has taken a looooooong time to get this far). Please keep pushing for a new version with other features. Yes, I'd love to see the code given to Apple if they want to cease development—I wholeheartedly agree with that. [alert admin]

Yahoo! Messenger 3.0b3.98855 (Mac OS X)

Very Happy

I never really use Skype to call land lines, and I imagine I wouldn't with this either. It does seem strange that (if as stated below) it doesn't have audio in video chats. Maybe you need to make 2 connections to do that (one audio and one video) but that seems odd. It's great to see Yahoo developing the software still for the Mac, and am glad that they do a really nice job with the User Interface. It always looks top notch. Beautifully presented for the Mac, and finally added the long absent voice features. Personally, my favorite thing about Yahoo Messenger? I know it's dumb, but the smilies. MSN's stink, iChat's are pretty good, and Skype & Google are the very worst (I mean REALLY bad). For an IM app, Yahoo Messenger is one of the friendliest and best thought out for the Mac. It's light, has most of the features you'd want in a basic messenger, and looks hella better for the Mac than for XP. Sure, photo sharing would be nice. But do you really need that stuff? All-in-all, it's a nicely done little app. If you want to have them keep developing for the Mac, I suggest you go to the feedback feature in the Help menu, and tell them thanks. And if you just switched to Mac, let 'em know—they need to know it's a growing platform, and worth continued development. [alert admin]

Transmission 1.06 (Mac OS X)

Still hogging my CPU

A few versions ago (1.0.3 or 1.0.2), it was okay. Now it seems to make all of my applications launch slowly, and load web pages in. Really disappointing. It keeps going through so many versions, and I always want the newest one, but it's really unpredictable how good the new version will be compared to the three previous versions that have been released in the last week or so. My advice for the developers....fewer versions, more testing. I mean, come on....look at how often most developers release versions. Sure, put up the nightly builds ( http://transmission.xpjets.com/# ), but test things a little more first please. [alert admin]

Transmission 1.02 (Mac OS X)

I love....things about it.....

Usually, I will use torrents with very few seeds....10 or 20 at the most. However I recently wanted to download something with 2000 seeds and leechers. No matter what I did, Transmission limited the slots per torrent to 50. I set the global setting to 200, and the setting in the inspector to 200, and it still capped out at 50 connections. That meant I had to revert to my previous torrenting app.....Azureus. I prefer Transmission-no doubt although...I WANT MORE INFORMATION ON EACH TORRENT IN A COMPACT FORM. I don't think it's asking for an informative yet compact window. In one line on Azureus, I can see the name, progress bar, number of seeds, peers, percentage finished, ratio, size, amount downloaded so far, etc. ALL ON ONE LINE. It takes Transmission THREE LINES to show less than that amount of information. Until I find out that that peer cap has been fixed, I will use Transmission for my normal DLs and Azureus for a few. Ooof.

Hmmmm....I just helped out a friend who was on 10.5.5 and was having the same problem (for weeks). She had no plugins installed. I tried all the troubleshooting steps anyone in Apple Discussions had mentioned, and nothing worked. As a last resort, I rebuilt her user, which worked. Hope you don't have to do that.

Import option.....

I had the same problem until someone pointed out it's in the General section in a not-so-obvious button called "Import Settings..." next to what to do when a CD is inserted. I freaked out too. LOL. Still miss ability to turn off "Browse By Genre"

Bandwidth?

Yeah, that's pretty funny. LOL. I think they just mean it plays well with others, and that you can easily cap it if you're doing other things. Nice catch though....the "these days" thing cracks me up.

Answers about naming conventions

From Apple: •If you had a working @mac.com email address as of July 9, you can continue to use that address as you always have, as well as your new address @me.com. •Your iWeb websites are still available at the same URLs and has also been given a new URL at (www.me.com). For example, (web.mac.com/emily_parker/) will work as will (web.me.com/emily_parker) -- both go to the same website. •Web Gallery is now MobileMe Gallery. If you have already…

Eh......

Don't be an ***. Nobody likes a jerk. Yeah, I guess you're right, it doesn't work on the consumer accounts. But as someone else has mentioned, it seems that that is an issue with the standards Microsoft is using for media. The framework for this is there, but M$ doesn't have their infrastructure ready to support the standard yet. Surely, they will catch up soon. My whole thing was that, much like Yahoo! Messenger, they are still developing for…
