OverSite 1.1 (Mac OS X)
A good idea - but this doesn't do it ![]()

Graphically designing the whole layout of a website is a good idea. Doing it in this program is clumsy. Right away this program gives the impression of an amateur programmer. It does not have spit and polish. It does not do much either. If you are building a website that is complicated enough to require graphic layout planning, then you already know how to do more than this program can do with your existing web tools. It is not that difficult to mock up a site in Dreamweaver, Freeway or any other program. To add insult, this barely useful program throws up an 11 second annoy-ware dialog every now and then. That's the last nail in the coffin. No way is this worth $15. [alert admin]

Big Medium 1.3.6 (Mac OS X)
Lack of demo and REQUIRED FREE ADVERTISING sucks
Requiring websites to display the Big Medium logo for a product that costs $129 is a slap in the face. To charge $375 further to get rid of that requirement is a joke. The final price of $504 to get an advertisement-free tool from an unknown company is absurd. It may work well, but many people will never know with this type of pricing. No need to try the live demo if you know you will not pay $500. [alert admin]

Keyword Page Creator 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)
This software creates pages full of junk text with keywords mixed in. This is a gimmick to get a ranking in a search engine. It can work, but any serious business or webmaster knows better. It does not have a Mac like GUI interface. It is very busy, very Windoze-esque. There are two Help menu items. Neither does anything. The help is actually located uder an Internet top level menu item. Also listed there are menu items that take you to all the other software made by this company, as well as menu items to link you to several other things about this application. Very amateurish. It's cripple-ware and the nag screen to register pops up when you run it and again after quitting, thus stopping you from quitting. The worst of all worlds. Whether you like what this product does or not, it is not $149 software. [alert admin]

RapidWeaver 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Easy To Use, But Only For Simple Things ![]()

If you are looking for software to make an extremely simple website quickly, this will work. Anything beyond typing a few words though gets frustrating very quickly. The most desirable feature for beginners is a WYSIWYG editor. Although it claims to be WYSIWYG, Rapid Weaver is not. It's close, but not true WYSIWYG. For example, when creating a Styled Text page one can drop a picture on the page in the editor. Click on the preview button and you will find your picture has moved and your text flows above, below or around it, depending on where your cursor was. This makes for a tedious iterative process to get it right. This is not WYSIWYG. When chaging the font of text, sometimes the font takes, sometimes it does not. You don't know until you click on preview (once again, not really WYSIWYG) and find some of your text changed, some didn't. These little details add up. Rapid Weaver wants to be Freeway from SoftPress Inc. Freeway does everything that users of Rapid Weaver have requested, but of course it costs seven times more. If you want to do only the absolute basics for a website Rapid Weaver may suffice. If you want to do a little bit more with a lot less hassle I recommend Freeway instead. [alert admin]
