Leopard Cache Cleaner 4.0.9 (Mac OS X)
There's one thing that LCC seems to do well: it reformats the file cache (it claims to use "the disc defragmentation tools built into OSX itself"... it says this in the yellow java text box as you roll your pointer over that choice under "optimize") and this seems to improve boot time and speed of app launches, at least on my sys (10.5.2 G5 Dual 2Ghz PPC) but I'm getting tired of this ongoing fascination with barber poles, and "jerky" ones, at that. It seems ... well, clunky. If it had an accompanying sound file, it would be that of a creaky door. I keep it on-board because of the file cache reformatting... all other jobs go to various utilities that run the Unix scripts, as I shut my Mac down. I want to trust LCC, but lately it won't validate my admin password: sometimes for the first few tries, and sometimes not at all. This seems to be at its own whim. This is a new development, and not a welcome one. It stalls occasionally on different tasks (force empty trash, and optimize ram) and a force-quit is often necessary. No stars or reviews - just observations. I hope it improves soon. [alert admin]

MainMenu 1.7.2 (Mac OS X)
Developer's obvious disinterest
From the "BLOG" of the developer, verbatim: >>>Posted January 5, 2008 mainmenu 1.7.2 and 10.5.x although most of mainmenu’s functions do work under 10.5.x, there are a number of things that may have problems running/won’t work, e.g flush lookupd cache, maintenance scripts… BUT nothing dangerous. hopefully there’ll be time to put out a proper update for leopard in the near future. thanks<<< Nothing dangerous. Right. Please don't be so cavalier with our Mac maintenance programs. I loved this little app, but I don't dare use it. Sorry. [alert admin]

OnyX 1.9.4b2 (Mac OS X)
I'm just trying to figure out how to install this app in "utilities", not "applications". Joel told me I could do it, but I'll be darned if I can figure it out when I click on the installer and walk through the installation steps. Can someone shed some light on this? My only choice of install location seems to be my apps folder. -Thanks (LOVE ONYX!) [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.5.2 (Mac OS X)
Quite a display of strong opinion here. Some hate Leopard, some love it. Me, I love it. It is rock solid for me, and I use AfterEffects, PS3 Extended, Dreamweaver 9, all the Adobe apps that seem to rub OSX the wrong way. I don't use any mods on my system - who needs mods with an OS like this? It seems to have inspired both hostility AND approval. Just like Miles Davis said... "If EVERYBODY digs what you play, you ain't playin' $#@%!" [alert admin]

Leopard Cache Cleaner 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)
Question: am I right in assuming that since that person gave LCC one star for requiring his password to run admin-only scripts, and not accepting "empty passwords" (whatever that is), this app has gone from a 5 star app to a 3, and that the developer will make less in sales, and people who don't read the posts but just look at the star ratings will just assume it's not that good and pass it by? If so, something really stinks in Denmark. Think before you post a review with a star rating. This is a GOOD app with a reliable track record, from a reliable vendor and deserves 5 stars. Leopard Cache Cleaner 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)
I've tried them all. Onyx is great but I love LCC for its different feature set. Not one bit of trouble. It's been a bit slow on Leopard, but this update is noticeably faster to start and seems more stable. As for the folks at Alaska being lazy, I feel that they take their jobs very seriously. All around great job at a reasonable price. [alert admin]

OnyX 1.9.0 (Mac OS X)
won't accept my admin password
Hi Joel. I've tried. I love Onyx. I download 1.9, it asks me for my password to install and I enter it. It installs. So far so good. Now I want to run a maintenance routine. When it asks again, it tells me "wrong password, repair permissions and try again"... I repair permissions as often as I brush my teeth (a lot, maybe to the point of paranoia) and everything is fine, re permissions and teeth. All is ok, every other program accepts my password. Help! Thanks Joel. [alert admin]

Leopard Cache Cleaner 4.0.3 (Mac OS X)
LCC 4.0.3 seems a bit smoother in its operation. I ran most of the tasks with no apparent problems. I'd still like to see reports as in the old (and now untrusted by me) MainMenu. Right now we get to see a barber pole, and (at least on my G5) a jerky one. But it seems more stable than 4.0.2. Glad to see the developer going ahead and updating the program. Thanks for the great app, Alaska! [alert admin]

CLIX 1.8.1 (Mac OS X)
Otto the Responder. Cute. But...
I tried to sign up for the "free clix newsletter". I'm getting up there in age and I'd obviously already signed up sometime last year. I got a really nasty message from "Otto", accusing me of data mining, whatever that is. Then, when I missed the fact that Otto is really just an auto-responder, and (admittedly) stupidly responded to this hostile attack by a robot, I received two letters from two real human beings (well, at least it seemed like two). The first told me what was up with Otto, forgave me for being an idiot, and said it was okay, I was not data mining (whatever that is) and that they'd fix it up so's I got the free newsletter. Then, 20 minutes later, a Darth Vader type person wrote me, telling me that, "upon reflection", he'd decided to put me on the "banned" list, and he called me...get ready for this..."totally bats$#@". He said that I couldn't use Clix anymore, and that I should write a song about "clues" since I obviously didn't have one. Lovely person, this. So I'll struggle along with the "bloatware" that he rejoices in trashing publicly (Onyx, LCC, etc). Seems to me that a person driven so easily to verbal attacks might, in a seething rage, miss that one line of code that could bring down my beloved Mac. Ever talk with Joel Barriere, the designer of Onyx? He's a beautiful person and a gentleman. I'll take his bloatware any day! [alert admin]

gee thanks bashar... this is the best mac utility, but...
No one seems to know what an empty password is. And I was right. You say, and I quote: "this is the best mac utility, but the devoloper is refusing to fix the log in password problem, its the only software on the mac ever to refuse blank passwords...." So it's the best. Wow! Then you give it one star, and mysteriously call it "the only software on the mac ever to refuse blank passwords...." I am not…

Always Amiss on One Thing or Another
It's like a Democratic National Debate in here! And just as civilized! When you use new software, ANY software, there are risks. Freeware is riskier, but there are exceptions (Adobe, anyone?) and I know that the developer of Onyx is seriously committed to his app. He goofed. He's fixing it. It's free. Lighten up. And mainly: run ANY software at your own risk - that's why that EULA is in the front there. If you have…

The developer, lazy? Password problem? The only problem here is that you seem to be too lazy to enter your password. LCC is a good product that does its job. It asks for a password for a reason, and that reason is to protect you and your system. You can change your password, by the way, in sys prefs. Make it really short! - Peace!

As a 58 year old Jewish American woman who lost family members in the Bergen Belsen labor camp and also in Birkenau, I can assure you there's nothing funny about the word to me. I don't care about Jerry Seinfeld or PC or anything you use as an excuse. It will never be on my Mac. It is an offense.
