FileMaker Pro 10.0v3 (Mac OS X)

Filemaker iPhone app?

I wish the Bento companion iPhone app would support Filemaker databases, or that a Filemaker app would be released. Power users need mobile databases too. And it would be wonderful if the Export Records option would export field names. The Import option logically offers it, but if I want to manually attempt to move my data to the iPhone through a third party iPhone app, or Excel, I have to manually recreate all the field names as records when I export my databases. Microsoft Office 2008 12.2.0 (Mac OS X)

Word still painfully buggy

My favorite Word 2008 bug is still there. Scroll around a document and watch text overlap other text, stop and you'll think you can edit, but really you're editing somewhere else. This screen updating bug makes using Word a nightmare. A Microsoft rep at Macworld assured me he was aware of the bug, and that it would be fixed later in January. Perhaps he meant January 2010? I often holding down the dash key to create a line. If I press return, Word transforms that into a solid line that is impossible to delete. Copying and pasting formatted text around this line results in the line being pasted elsewhere even if it wasn't selected. Of course there are the frequent unexpected quits to still enjoy. They must have changed something though, because sometimes when I delete a line of text or a blank space, a moment later the line jumps up or down. Thanks for giving me an even worse product to use. Word 2004 was a much better product. [alert admin]

MacScan 2.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Suggestion for definition updates

MacScan is the first and best program for what it does. But it lacks the ability to auto update definitions on a schedule. It only updates when the program is launched. Scheduled scans use old definitions, unless I remember to manually launch the program and update definitions. It would also be helpful to have scheduled scans check a specific folder, and be able to setup multiple schedules. And if I have a new folder or file I'd like to quickly scan, I'd appreciate being able to drag and drop on the application, rather than launch MacScan, click lots of boxes and several screens to choose the folder. iAntiVirus Free Edition 1.35 (Mac OS X)

Compare to MacScan?

A free version is a good value for a lot of people, but I wonder how this compares to MacScan, macscan.securemac.com, the first Mac malware detection program that came out a few years ago. As MacScan is commercial, I suspect MacScan is better. The only thing MacScan is lacking is the ability to auto update definitions. It only updates when the program is launched. I've found that a combination of ClamXAv, MacScan, and Norton Antivirus has worked well for me. All three have detected different things. But I look forward to seeing how iAntiVirus progresses. Bento 2.0v4 (Mac OS X)

A Great Beginning

Bento 2 is the best solution for easily creating templates and designing a beautiful database. It is very visually attractive. It works with pictures far better than Filemaker 10, but still needs some improvements like being able to see a larger version of the placed picture. Undo's after typing data into a field are possible, unlike Filemaker 10 that has no undos after pressing enter and is awkward and slow for design. It is a lot easier to work with data in the new spreadsheet view. I really wish Bento was the solution for me, especially now that there is an iPhone version, but the lack of files and passwords are a dealbreaker. It stores all data in a package somewhere on the hard drive. Not having individual files prevents me from sharing databases with family and friends, or sharing between my desktop and laptop. Yes, I can export the data as an unformatted text file, reimport and reformat every time I want to share every database file. This however is not an ideal or easy solution. Or, you can backup all of your Bento libraries as one file and completely overwrite the second computer's Bento data. Thus, no data can easily be shared without both computers being identical. Not very practical for families or friends who need to share data, or if you have a laptop and want to copy one database to it. Speaking with Filemaker representatives, I was told the reason Bento doesn't use files is make it easy for home users, as if the concept of files is too complicated for the average person. That and because it ties into your Home folder, would make it challenging to have files and they want to differentiate it from Filemaker. Challenging or not, files are essential. Filemaker developers also shared hopes that the ease of use in Bento would come to Filemaker. Maybe someday we’ll all have a database that is both powerful and easy to use. [alert admin]

Shomi 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Shomi 2.04b1

The developer fixed the EPS issue in a preliminary 2.04b1 version in 2007. Unfortunately he never released it to the public. I hope Shomi will continue to be supported. [alert admin]

3.41 does't break Intel backups

Thanks but actually I haven't touched Leopard. The developer has been unable to reproduce the bug, but it is occurring on multiple Intel Macs - it is indeed a bug and I'm sadly looking elsewhere for a trustworthy backup solution. I've had additional experiences where data isn't being backed up that is supposed to be on PowerPC Macs.

CD Takes 15 Minutes to Boot

Actually, I do have an idea of typical CD boot times and requirements. That's why Techtool's excessive boot time is ridiculous. I've never had DiskWarrior or the OS X install CD's take more than 5 minutes. Thanks for being so pleasant with your feedback.
