Mail Scripts 2.8.3 (Mac OS X)

Send all drafts still doesn't work

I upgraded to this version because the previous version had trouble with "Send All Drafts". I save several outgoing messages as drafts when I don't have access to an outgoing mail server. When I get to a place where I do have access to an outgoing mail server, I run "Send All Drafts". The problem is that I get an error telling me that SMTP server "NULL" is not available, for each message. That makes the script useless because I still have to deal with each message one at a time. I could just as easily go to the drafts folder, click on each message and click send. Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug in this program? [alert admin]

Apple HP Printer Driver 2.2 (Mac OS X)

HP Deskjet 970

I'm not sure when it happened but my HP deskjet 970 has been out of commission for a while. It went through a phase where it would take an hour to print one line. Lately it's not printing because it insists I change the color ink cartridge. I only want to print black, and black is full. This used to be no problem, but someone got greedy at some point. I'll try to install this update and see if I have better luck. [alert admin]

EndNote X2 (Mac OS X)

What's new?

Hmmm. I watched the video. It still looks like a windows program. And most of the exciting new features are pretty ho-hum. The new approach to searching on-line content looks promising, because the old way is very awkward. I hope they got it right this time. [alert admin]

Bookdog 4.2.2 (Mac OS X)

bookmark Nazi

This thing should be renamed "bookmark Nazi". I just wanted something to sync my bookmarks. I saw "sort" and "remove duplicates" and I thought, what the heck. Well, I had all my bookmarks organized the way I wanted and the damn program kept rearranging them. I finally deleted it, and I'm still trying to get things back the way I like them. [alert admin]

1Passwd 2.4.1 (Mac OS X)

I like it

This threatens to be my favorite piece of sharware since LaunchBar. I try all sorts fo things and most end up not being useful, but after two days I already can't imagine what I would do without this one. I've used PasswordWallet for a couple of years, but it's clumsy and doesn't fill everything. Safari and Firefox won't autofill bank sites. So it's been a combination of Omniweb and PasswordWallet. But 1passwd is great. It's integrated into the browser very nicely. And it fills everything, even those annowing sites that make you break your account number into several fields and choose something from a pop-up menu. I have one site that is very tedious because it asks for three pieces of information to log in. PasswordWallet won't fill it. Safari won't fill it. But 1passwd has no problem. There are all kinds of sites I don't go to often because they are a pain to log into or I can't remember the login info. There are credit cards I forget to pay because I'm too lazy to get into their sites. I never know how many airmiles I have because logging in is a pain. Now I can get into everything very easily. There are other advantages and features of this program that the developer's web site will tell you about, but so far for me it's been about remembering passwords and loggining into web sites much more easily. Apple iTunes 7.0 (Mac OS X)

iPod shuffle playlist

I like getting a visual representation of the CD. That's cool. But under six my iPod shuffle playlist would stay in iTunes even when my iPod wasn't plugged in. So I could edit the list and next time I plugged in the shuffle the changes would be made. That appears to be history, unless there is a hidden setting I'm not finding. Why remove a useful feature like that? [alert admin]

Delicious Library 1.6.2 (Mac OS X)

recommended

I downloaded this just to try it out and ended up inputting my entire library, which I now know comes to 360 books. It's fun to scan and see the info and images of your books as they start to accumulate in the library. I am a scholar and I find that I'm loosing track of what I have. It is becomming more common that I accidently buy books I already own. So I see this as a great tool. I can check my database before I order books on line, and I can bring my iPod to bookstores with me (haven't tried iPod sync yet). I can see myself taking advantage of the loan feature, especially when I loan books to students. It works best for newer, US published books, of course. Books from the past 15 years mostly seem to have barcodes which you can scan. Books for the past 20 years or so have ISBNs, so I inputted the isbn numbers for older books without bar codes. Books older than 20 years or so don't have ISBNs. You can find them by title, but the info you download will be from a newer edition. Foreign books: I have a lot of books purchased in Brazil. That was hit and miss for some reason. Half scanned fine, another quarter could be entered using ISBN numbers and another quarter could not be found by this program. Most data downloaded came without pictures. That has to do with quality of the on-line databases this program searches. Oddly my trashy paperback airport novels would not scan. But if I entered the ISBNs, the data and images would appear. One problem that should be fixed: edited volumes end up with the author field blank. Scanning: I have an iSight camera. I mounted the camera on my laptop and approached the book to the camera, watching the image on the screen until it came into focus. I found it worked better with good light, natural light from a window shining on the book. Where I had trouble was with shiny covers, especially on CDs (I tried a handfull of those). The glare caused problems and they wouldn't scan. Some books had strange colors that prevented them from scanning: dark red for example. I haven't played with my new database much yet, but I like typing keywords in and seeing the covers of the books in my search results. It really is like seeing your books on the shelf. There is something about it that's better than seeing a text list of titles. I'm not sure hardbound books should be represented as larger than paperbacks. Often they aren't actually bigger and I'm not sure what is gained by this convention. I have a feeling the database won't be flexible enough for me. What I would love to see is integration with EndNote. I've used endnote for years to keep track of books and articles that are relavant for my research. But there is no elegant way to keep track of what I actually own, or to manage lending my books out. Of course EndNote does a much better job of storing bibliographic information. And it's a tool for writing and formatting academic texts that goes beyond the scope of Dilicious Library. Records in EndNote could have a button that would take you to the corresponding record in DL, and visa versa. Better still. EndNote could buy DL and integrate the scanning, cover art, and book lending features. EndNote could also adopt this sort of OSX style interface because the current EndNote interface is worthless. BitTorrent 4.4.1 (Mac OS X)

drops seeds and peers over time

I've noticed that over time the number of seeds and peers on a particular download tend to drop off, say over a number of hours or overnight. If I quit and restart the program then I get them back. Why would this be? [alert admin]

MacTheRipper 2.6.6 (Mac OS X)

Narnia

I wasn't able to rip Narnia with 2.6.6. I keep getting "bad sectors" error. This is the first DVD that has given me trouble. Some new kind of copy protection? Is there a workaround, or will I have to wait for a fix in the next version? [alert admin]

Help

Me too. So what can be done about it? My mistake was to click the "set preferences" button. Now I can't seem to undo the damage. My libraries open with the list of albums, but no photos. The photos are their on the hard drive.
