Microtek ScanWizard Pro 7.60 (Mac OS X)
Just had to add, that after the last post, I downloaded a fresh copy of ScanWizard Pro 7.60 - and experienced very different results. This time the software crashes upon launching - period. Can't get it to even go past the startup screen (after deleting ALL prefs and user files the Uninstaller left in Libraries. Congratulations, Microtek! Anyone have an Epson V750 for sale? Microtek ScanWizard Pro 7.60 (Mac OS X)
Our Microtek i900 has been almost impossible to wrestle under control using Microtek's PHENOMENALLY badly designed ScanWizard software. Starting off, when you install the software, it actually creates a folder called "Applications" - in the primary user's folder! Helloooooo? After you've wrestled with ScanWizard for enough hours of sudden crashes, impossibility of getting the TWAIN drivers to work importing directly into Adobe CS3 apps, you might be tempted to run the "Uninstaller" which Microtek sees fit to install with every installation. Let's see - if I were going to automatically install an uninstaller, I wonder... would I also contemplate the fact that perhaps some users are uninstalling in order to attempt a clean install? If so, I might be tempted to have the uninstaller actually UNINSTALL THE APPLICATION. Which it will do, provided you've left in the unecessarry Scanwizard folder it created in your Applications folder, which - you guessed it - contains the application, and the uninstaller! Then, it might be a good idea if the uninstaller actually removed the plug-ins it's placed in the Adobe CS3 apps' plug-in folders, the Application Support files it's installed, and last but not least, six or seven preference files for "Microtek" "ScanMaker" "Scanwizard" a bunch of other stuff. This semi-workable scanner is hobbled by the lamest software ever attempted by a company who obviously run Windows EVERYTHING, bought one Mac (a used iMac, I'd guess) and tried to build software for it. VueScan 8.4.68 (Mac OS X)
...that's all I need to say. My Microtek i900 scanner has given me fits, trying to get it run smoothly in Leopard. The "ScanWizard" software - I think the "Wizard" must have been he-who-shall-not-be-named. When I run a scan with the Microtek software (Microtek's website doesn't even mention a Mac OS beyond 10.4) the scanner makes a sound like someone is smashing the glass with a ballpeen hammer. Even Lasersoft's SilverFast software, usually a reliable and top quality scanning interface, does unexpected quits, or forever-spinning-beachballs. I was almost ready to conclude that I had to toss the (recently purchased, used) i900 out the window - then I remembered VueScan! It ran smoothly, perfectly, and delivers top-quality scans. Only regret is, if there's a plug-in or a way to acquire images from directly within Photoshop CS3 using Vuescan, I haven't used it yet - but I confess to not having read much in the way of manuals or ReadMe files - Hamrick has produced (and refined, over the years) such an intuitive interface, that I've taken the easy route - as they say in the military regarding smart ballistics - "fire, and forget it", ie line it up, push the button, turn away from the target and the missile will home in. SilverFast Ai (Microtek) 6.5.5r4a (Mac OS X)
I notice no feedback on SilverFast's driver for this (admittedly legacy) scanner - the installer does some wacky things, even in Tiger (what is the installer doing placing an alias to the app on my hard drive root folder, in between "Library" and "System", for instance - and another alias on my Desktop, and another in the Dock? This version locks up when trying to import into Photoshop CS3 under Leopard. I hope I can work it out - I'll call LaserSoft, they've always been helpful. That said - the quality of the results from this scanning software beat anything I've seen by anyone else - and I'd recommend to anyone to leave Microtek's "ScanWizard" app on the CD it came on. File Buddy 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)
I have to say, Lawrence Harris was very quick to respond when I emailed concerning some problems with FileBuddy on Leopard. He promised to attempt to address known problems soon, and was firm in his request for specific descriptions of problems with FB - not just vague complaints. That said, I would love to see an update out soon, but perhaps he's running a one-man show and is buried. Single biggest improvement, in my opinion, would be extensive and contextual help files and tooltips (thus freeing Mr Harris from having to respond to untold enquiries). I don't know of any - ANY - software that does in one package what File Buddy can do. It's just that figuring out exactly how to do it can be a bit elusive at times. [alert admin]

FontAgent Pro 4.0 (Mac OS X)
I also can't locate any special upgrade pricing for v 3 > 4 anywhere on Insider's website. Sent an email and I'll post the response when I get it. It would be a shame - can't imagine spending $100 on this long-overdue upgrade with no acknowledgement from the developer for years of support. [alert admin]

StuffIt Expander 12.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Help! After using - and losing - this dog since 1996 or so, I'm again being dragged, kicking and screaming, back into Stuffit because of Unarchiver's inability to open SITX files - which my clients are still sending (doesn't anyone use the contextual menus? Control-click any Mac file, guys - the OS will ZIP it for ya!) As usual, Stuffit's installers start dumping crap all over my Macs - in prefs, menubars, startup items, contextual menus, etc etc. Wanna know how much Smith-Micro cares about Mac users? Log on to the Stuffit website and enter the word "Leopard" in their site search bar - results: nada - it doesn't come up. [Correction - it is mentioned on Smith-Micro's FAXstf software page].
