Excellent for tidying up recordings ![]()

I record plays and the like, and I usually mess up the start and end of the recording by accidentally adding bits of voiceover. It takes about a minute using this software to tidy them up. Excellent stuff. (ibook G4 OSx 10.3.9) [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 1.5.5(74) (Mac OS X)
A joy to use. I've tried various other cloning solutions, but none has been as easy to use, or as error-free as this. I raised query on the Bulletin Board, and got a detailed reply within a couple of hours. Brilliant!!! [alert admin]

Canon ScanGear CS 7.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Just downloaded 7.01. I didn't believe that anything could be worse than the original Canon scanner software, but this probably is. Since I installed it, it's taken me at least three goes to scan anything I've put in. The menus don't work. Saving is a nightmare. For a company which produces brilliant consumer products (cameras and printers), this is the most appalling user-hostile pile of rubbish that I've ever encountered. (And I write as someone who's used Microsoft software!) To treat paying customers in such a contemptuous fashion with this kind of stuff is just not acceptable. I am henceforth an EX-Canon customer [alert admin]

Intego Personal Backup X3 10.3.8.1 (Mac OS X)
CLONING with Personal Backup X3 - a warning
I've been backing up using the "clone" rather than the backup option to ensure that I had copies of all my system files. I noticed that some of my data had not been copied on my most recent back-up. Here's what Intego said when I asked Tech Support: "The Clone operation will not be able to determine if files have changed, only if they are present. It does not provide the type of modification checking for an incremental backup the way that the backup script does. If you are going to Clone as a weekly backup method we suggest that you first erase the destination disk and then clone so that all of the current modifications of the files are copied. We are hoping to address this in an upcoming release of the product so that the Clone operation will abide by the same incremental rules as the Backup script does. We apologize for the frustration and confusion his has caused." Which means that the 'cloned" back-ups I've been making for the last two months are useless. Thanks, Intego. I'm not sure that what Intego says is even true, since the files that Personal Backup failed to copy were new, not changed, and it certainly should have noticed them. Mind you they contained Microsoft software, so you can't blame it for being a bit reluctant. [alert admin]

Microsoft Virtual PC 7.0 (Mac OS X)
I've just installed VPC 7.0 with Windows XP Pro under OSX 10.3.8 on my iBook G4. Easy enough to install, and use, but I've been completely unable to connect consistently to the internet. Explorer half loads some pages (taking 3-4 minutes) and then gives up. Sometimes it just tries for a few minutes and achieves nothing. I'm using broadband, both through an Airport, and by cable to the router. I've followed all the instructions and set all the parameters (I think) but nothing seems to fix it. It's a complete pain, since I'm not going to be able to do most of the things I want to, and which I can't do on the Mac (GPSs and PDAs, notably). If anyone out there has any useful advice, I'd love to hear it. Ah, well. I suppose it's nice to know that, whatever else changes, Microsoft software provides a pillar of stability in a volatile world. It was rubbish 10 years ago. It's rubbish now! Back to good old Safari and Camino - both worked right away with absolutely no trouble. [alert admin]

Intego Personal Backup X3 10.3.8 (Mac OS X)
In and earlier comment I said that this product "doesn't work". That was certainly true of the version I had then, but the product seems to have been fixed. Intego have now provided 10.3.8, and I've created three separate clones from scratch, and updated one I made earlier. All of them booted OK, and as far as I can tell all the data, settings, preferences, permissions, etc were fine. I was sent this version after informing Intego of some problems, and they've been responsive and communicative in fixing the product, and in telling me about updates. A pat on the back for Intego!! AppleWorks X 6.2.9 (Mac OS X)
Pretty ropey - drove me to Microsoft!!!
I was a keen user of Claris/Appleworks on my old Mac. I got a G4 with free Appleworks, and it lack many of the features I liked in the old version, and just is full of inconsistencies and peculiarites that I began to entertain suspicions that it was writen by some PC enthusiasts. I got so frustrated that (forgive me for I have strayed) I bought a copy of Microsoft Office - which while it's vastly over-complicated, is very solid and feature rich. And the Student/Home version at around £100 is a great bargain. [alert admin]

Internet Cleanup 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)
I've just spent 4.5 hours trying to upload a working version of this. Diligently following the ludicrously complex procedure for uninstalling the old version. Result? Absolutely nothing achieved. Allume have lost (another) customer. If I'd wante dtomuck about like this, I'd have gone the PC route. [alert admin]

Intego Personal Backup X3 10.3.8 (Mac OS X)
10.3.7 failed to work. I installed 10.3.8 and that doesn't work either. NOT recommended. As an aside, does anyone nknow why Intego NetUpdate won't work over Airport, but will work with a direct connection?? [alert admin]

I finally got the new "official" version, and it appears to work. The version which didn't was a "beta" version that Intego had sent me.
