iBank 3.0 (Mac OS X)
nice comparison with Moneydance
See the following website for a nice comparison with Moneydance, the other major Mac competitor with Quicken: http://facelikefizz.wordpress.com/2008/02/29/should-i-give-up-on-ibank-3-and-go-back-to-moneydance/ [alert admin]

Stalker 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)
It's a definite improvement over just using Yahoo. It is nice to have a compact listing of how investments are doing with both information about price change during the day, since the security was bought, and overall investment performance. It doesn't do anything else though. It also doesn't handle short sales. If you want something cheap and simple then it is a good buy. [alert admin]

FileInfo 1.3 (Mac OS X)
I've used the 1.2 version for some time and been happy with it. I tried version 1.3 on a file (using OS X 10.4.11 on a G5) and got a weird error message: "Can't make current application into type <<class imaA>>" Quick Change 3.0 worked fine for me and it is free. [alert admin]

DropInfos 1.0 (Mac OS X)
It didn't work when I tried changing both Creator and Type although it did for just Creator. Quick Change worked for me and it is also free. [alert admin]

MacCvsX 3.3b1 (Mac OS X)
I couldn't even get past logging into sourceforge to import a project. It wouldn't ask me for my password and instead just gave me error messages that I was not providing a password. I'm sure there is some way to do so but there is not documentation and no one to ask. There isn't even a user forum that I can find. I can't recommend this program unless you REALLY know what you are doing. Seems like it is better to just use the command line interface. At this point this program just seems to be adding an additional level of complexity to the process. [alert admin]

YouTube Video Grabber 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I tried out both this one and videobox on a youtube video. They both worked fine but videobox is easier to use and is cheaper. [alert admin]

QIM 1.4.2 (Mac OS X)
My father, who is a professor of Chinese, has the following to say: I have been using QIM for about a year and find it excellent. The characters are clearly displayed, having frequently used characters movie to the front is very useful, and I have not had any problems with it. On the contrary, the change of the Apple fonts that came with OS10 is a disaster, many common characters are not included, and the range of input methods are strange indeed. Thank goodness for QIM. Age of Empires III 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)
good eye candy but game play is so-so ![]()

I was kind of disappointed with AoE III. I and II were immensely addictive and Age of Mythology was really fun. AoE III was a real step up in terms of graphics but the game play was actually less good. There is less distinctiveness between the unit types and the artillery are overwhelmingly powerful. They act like tanks. Once you have them you mostly don't want to build anything else. Not at all true to the era and unbalanced from a game perspective. In AoE II there was a lot of strategy with respect to building walls and castles and so forth and in how to take them down. This really isn't the case for AoE III. It's much harder to build castles and they are far less powerful. The campaign is reasonably entertaining though. I didn't play against other human players so I can't speak to that part but the computer matches seemed rather uninteresting. The home city aspect is interesting but ultimately doesn't make up for the rest of it. Still worth trying out. Just not as good. I'm still firing up A of M when I want a quick game. [alert admin]

I wanted to edit this but Versiontracker doesn't seem to allow one to do that any more. By poking around on Google I found that the camer control issue has caused a lot of complaints. Apparently there is a fix though. What you do is go to the game options and select the checkbox for two-button rotate. After you do this, you can rotate the screen when holding down both mouse…

What makes you say Bookends might suffer from database corruption issues? I haven't seen any comments to this effect. Do you have evidence for this or is this just speculation? It's a serious charge!

Check the comments under Endnote. It's done worse than just stagnate. Version 8 was so full of bugs it is unusable. They issued two patches for the Windows version but left the Mac users in the cold. Now they have version 9 out. Would you buy it given what happened with version 8?

I ran into this too when I upgraded via the automatic update mechanism. I e-mailed the developer and got a prompt reply (customer support is great!). The problem is that Moneydance was upgraded but not the Java code it relies on. Some sort of developer oversight. What you need to do is to reinstall the application from scratch. In other words, download the application from the developer website. It'll…

Another thing to consider is that the developer making the spamcop plugin says that they are no longer supporting it due to some misunderstanding with the spamcop site and so it will likely stop working with the next OS X upgrade (10.4).

Spamcop is also making me hit a confirmation button for each report which gets annoying. I'd say sp@mx is still easier to use.

Hmmmm.....not bad. I notice it's opening up a separate browser page for each report. I would imagine that for folks struggling with dozens or hundreds of messages the sp@mx approach would be easier. I'm only getting about a dozen each day so I may use this instead. My spam count seems to be going up, alas, so maybe not.
