VisualHub 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)

Very good app for what it does

Have been using VH since 1.02 and it just gets better. Most conversion are avi to mpeg2 but have done a few mpeg2 to mpeg4 for iPod too. The docs are good although for those of us that are curious, it would be nice to actually know the settings used for each canned solution. That way, should we wish to click the advanced tab, we would have somewhere to go. It would also be nice if someone having a serial number problem didn't apply a rating. There are all sorts of reasons why serials do not work and many have nothing to do with the application in hand. [alert admin]

Harmony Remote 5.3.2 (Mac OS X)

finding the software

The software is available from the members login page for your Remote. Do not log in. Click on the "What's New" link at the top left corner of the login page. If you log in and try to download the expected way, you will find the previous version (at least on the Australian site.) [alert admin]

VueScan 8.3.39 (Mac OS X)

great support

I have used this product on an off for a number of years. It was the only software I could use to access an old scanner once Apple changed to USB. Since then I have switched between it and the supplied software on various scanners. My current box, a Canon MP780 was a case in point. It took a very long time to complete a scan. I tried VueScan once Canon MFP support was announced and discovered that the feeder, although recognised, could not be accessed. Ed worked over back and forth e-mails to locate the problem and resolve it. Very much appreciated. I also discovered why the Canon software was so slow. Quite by accident I VueScanned without de-screen and the scan was very fast. With de-screen on the scan and transfer was still fast but I could see there was a significant processing of the image. This information was not evident with the Canon software. So VueScan, still faster than the Canon software, also informed me of the stages entailed in processing, nice. Finally the batch mode (multiple images on the flatbed, although requiring a bit of initial fiddle, is a lot more useful and flexible than that offered by the Canon auto multi image function. Yes there are occasions when I revert to the Canon software (mostly for duplex scanning) but otherwise I prefer VueScan for its speed and utility. [alert admin]

Virex X 7.5b1 (Mac OS X)

great idea but..

I am unable to install the beta. It keeps telling me I have another Virus checker installed. I thought this was a bit touchy as it was VIREX 721 but I proceded to remove it. I removed everything I could find (according to the install log) but the 7.5 installer still tells me I have a Virus checker installed. Has anybody else seen this ans solved it? [alert admin]

lots of white noise??

as you must be using a griffen hardware device (iMic, Powerwave etc) to use this app, you have a pre amp already. Hence you can go straight from the turntable via the HW device. Although you are now relying on the Griffen HW to amplify your signal, it will probably be cleaner. Jusy make sure you ground your turntable less you pick up power supply hum. In FV you just have to set the…
