Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.5 (Mac OS X)
Finally able to install without needing to hack the update table script
12.1.5 installed on both Intel Macs without error the first time. This is in stark contrast to every previous update I've installed for Office '08 which have all required some script hacking to allow the installation to proceed. I believe that MacBU has resolved some installer issues even though this isn't noted in their Release Notes. [alert admin]

Logitech Control Center 2.4.0 (Mac OS X)
They note that it is no longer an APE module, that's right its now an Input Manager! Although, I guess since it *is* software for managing input devices they aren't really abusing the interface. For the record, I never had a problem with 2.3.1, even in Leopard. [alert admin]

Audio Hijack 2.2.6 (Mac OS X)
"The original Audio Hijack application is no longer available for purchase."
However, the developer's site kindly refers you to one of their other products which are US$32 each, not the US$16 listed in the VT entry. [alert admin]

This is a pretty snazzy Input Manager. I suspect a lot of the problems folks are having with this is because they are running a very old version. Indeed, I had a problem with Safari crashing. It was due to a conflict with Piclens and another Input Manager I had installed. Simply installing the newly available version of Piclens resolved the conflict and I was up and running. I don't know the developers, but this simple piece of software does something for me that I didn't know I was missing. Check out the developers site at http://www.piclens.com to get access to the most recent beta release. [alert admin]

Xslimmer 1.2.5 (Mac OS X)
What is the real utility of this software?
I've downloaded an earlier version of this but never slimmed any apps. The reason? I have about 60GB free on my 100GB boot drive and have absolutely no desire to risk the functionality of my applications to recover a few hundred MB. I've seen others say that apps "appear" to run faster after slimming. Is there anything to back this up? Don't take this post the wrong way, I'm not trying to rile folks up, I just can't justify the benefit over the risk. What is the point of backing up slimmed applications? Clearly the backup is to restore a non-working application in the rare event that happens, but then what is the point of slimming it in the first place? Performance? Is there anything more than anecodotes like "apps feel faster?" If this is the case, I would feel more comfortable devoting time to trying this software out. Thanks in advance to anyone who chooses to honestly and seriously reply to this. [alert admin]

SpeedMail 0.9b (Mac OS X)
I use Mail.app with a .Mac account, 5 Gmail accounts, and a local ISP account I got years ago. Over time, Mail.app seems to slow down as it deals with these massive indices. This app seems to compress the mail database, but it saves me a trip to the Terminal to do so. I have observed the 5 Gmail accounts take some time to display the messages in the Inbox immediately after opening Mail.app (in the order of 3-5 seconds) where the .Mac messages appear right away. After running SpeedMail, the Gmail messages appeared right along with the .Mac message after opening Mail.app. In other words, no delay. [alert admin]

VoteWatch 1.1 (Mac OS X)
Perfect example of what a widget can be ![]()

Wow. As previous reviewers have stated, this is a fantastic idea for a widget. The previous comments I have read concerning graphical problems in version 1.0 don't seem to apply to version 1.1, so good job to the widget developer in responding to the feedback. VoteWatch 1.1 is the first version I have used.
This is a U.S. only widget, so international users can skip this one unless they have an interest in American politics, in which case, they can see what our politicians really do with their time and our money. [alert admin]

smcFanControl 2.0 (Mac OS X)
I found that in 1.x, once you opened smcFanControl, you could close the app and your settings would be retained. That being said, I prefer to have access to that information in my menubar because I have a widescreen monitor and am also a menubar icon nut. However, I agree with others who have stated it would be nice to have the option to disable the menubar icon. A preference pane would be ideal in my opinion. Then again, free is free, and this is a great free app and I would use it no matter what it looked like. Thanks for making this fantastic tool. [alert admin]

I wanted to test out my new Dell 2407WFP display. Worked flawlessly on 10.4.8/Intel. I had to go to the developer's site to get the file as VT's download link brought down a corrupt file. No bad pixels BTW. [alert admin]

Nick, Glad you found it. I also agree that it's a pretty non-standard way to do things from a preference pane.

The image I downloaded from here: http://www.telestream.net/download-files/flip4mac-wmv/Flip4Mac-WMV-2.3.0.11-BETA.dmg was successfully mounted twice on my 10.6.1 system. The file was downloaded twice 2 hours apart. *I* believe you all, just sharing my experience. Here's a screenshot showing that the image is mounted. http://img182.imageshack.us/i/flip4macdmg.jpg/

I downloaded the .DMG 2 hours ago and again just now and it mounted successfully using DiskImageMounter both times on 10.6.1. The file downloaded was 19.6 MB rather than the 6.3 MB indicated on the VT page. As a test, I would recommend trying the great tool Pacifist as an alternate method to mount the image.

Your first assumption would be incorrect jeffster. Second, as to your "majority of users" comment, we don't really have any way to assess that based on this one comment on this forum. Third, this is the type of report that should be sent to the developer. While you and the original poster sound well intentioned, the notion that a beta (and one based on a .kext at that) isn't ready for "prime…

Is it possible that it is labelled as a BETA for that exact reason? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#Beta

Mail app crash every time with 10.5.6 ![]()

This is probably caused by an old and busted plug-in which is installed for Mail.app. Take a look in /Users/<username>/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ and look for log files starting with "Mail_". You should be able to work backward from this log file to determine what is responsible for the crash. Once you've identified the culprit, download the new version of the plug-in if the developer offers one.

Yet you still took the time to type up a comment on an item you feel is ridiculous. For the record, I do not think this is a ridiculous idea and am thus immune to criticism for having posted a comment. Meow!
