TAMS Analyzer 3.34b6 (Mac OS X)
I am a PhD student, who waited until the last year to take my qualitative analysis courses. I needed something that I could use right away without too much training.
In TAMS I found a carefully considered, thoroughly documented, up-to-date, and logical program that I was able to learn well enough for my first project in just a couple of hours.
One thing that impresses me about this software is that the creator took the time to make it understandable by including a tutorial. How refreshing to see a mindset of a mentor in the field of software. And so often it is in Open Source or Creative Commons that we get to breathe this fresh air. It almost gives one hope for humanity!
Thank you! [alert admin]

Mellel 2.1 (Mac OS X)
Thoughtful Additions to Excellent App ![]()

This is the most user friendly regular expression search I've seen. It's a method anyone - without grep expertise - can use. And the ability to save search methods is an important addition. Then making this lean app leaner and better able to convert other formats shows these folks care about continually improving quality. I've been using Mellel now for about a year, and even though I'm an MS Word power user, Mellel has become my favorite word processor. Once I got to the "Ah-ha" stage of how Mellel style settings worked, I found them to be far easier to use - and far more stable and dependable. It has been perfect for writing papers in APA style, especially with Bookends integration for reference. Kudos to the developers. [alert admin]

Look Mom, No Hands! 2.0b4 (Mac OS X)
I liked this product well enough to buy, but the registration code did not work. I have emailed the developer twice but received no response. So I have had to turn it off to stop getting the annoying reminder. I like the idea, especially since I use my PowerBook exclusively; but I find it annoying that when I hold my left-click down too long while drag-dropping, a contextual menu pops up. This is particularly irritating with some applications that require a great deal of dragging. I thought if I bought the app I would lengthen the pop-up time, but I'm unable to experiment since my registration code doesn't work. In the same vein, no matter what the price, if one gets nothing for the money, the price is too high. [alert admin]

SpamSieve 2.4.2 (Mac OS X)
I patiently waited until I had enough junk to properly train SpamSieve, followed the directions to a "T" and tried to open my next incoming mail item. Apple's Mail crashed. Not until I completely uninstalled SS and all its components, restarted the computer, and finally deleted Mail's preferences, was I able to use Mail again. I lost my accounts with the preferences and had to recreate them. I was going to email the developer but couldn't since Mail wouldn't work. Should've used the the Web-based email I guess. It was such a time-waster I probably won't try to SS again. However, I'd be interested to know if this is a bug and if it gets fixed. [alert admin]

Mellel 2.0.4 (Mac OS X)
I'm finishing my master's degree and started using Mellel last fall. There are a few things I'd like a bit more sophisticated, but overall, this is the best word processor I've found for writing papers. I set up my own APA stylesheet and it has made formatting ever so much easier. Unlike Word, Mellel doesn't override things or do quirky formatting I didn't want. And its integration with Bookends is very handy. The widow-orphan control was a huge improvement. I find it more predictable than Mariner or Word and more sophisticated than Nisus. [alert admin]

Iridium 1.7.1 (Mac OS X)
When I first installed Iridium, I used ThemeChanger. Ever since, my "spinning rainbow" has had rough edges. I'd hoped it might get fixed when I reinstalled Iridium using the stand-alone installer, but no luck. Did the ugly spinning rainbow come from ThemeChanger? Or Iridium? I like Iridium, and it has caused me no problems, but I'd like to restore Apple's spinning rainbow. I hate watching it enough when it looks good; it's almost intolerable looking bad! [alert admin]

High Priority 1.01 (Mac OS X)
The difference between "buggy" and "not buggy" may be due to the version update. I note the buggy comment relates to an earlier version. [alert admin]

OmniWeb 5.1.2 beta 1 (Mac OS X)
OmniWeb works with some sites that Firefox can't handle. Although I tend to attribute the glitches to the site, it is helpful to have a browser that can handle the scripts. Speed is also very good now. The tabbed browsing is a different approach, but it works. I wish it didn't take up so much room on the side. On the minus side, I find a few properly configured CSS-based sites that are not rendered correctly. Weighing script handling against CSS-rendering, I'm keeping a Mozilla-based browser for my default, but I keep Omni handy to use when needed, and I'm keeping an open mind about the future. Intego VirusBarrier X 10.1.5 (Mac OS X)
I have been using this app for about a week and bought it. It has a user-friendly interface and clear information about the results of both virus scans and virus definitions. It runs smoothly in the background, and the current version has no bugs that I can discern. The manufacturer is up-front about the cost and the duration of free virus definition updates. I'm using FirstLook which can be downloaded at: http://secondlife.com/community/firstlook.php It's beta, but it doesn't crash on me. Might be worth a try. You might also want to empty out your preferences.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this well reasoned, detailed review. I am not a Bookends power user so am not yet aware of its capabilities. However, I have a number of friends who are new and enthusiastic users of Endnotes, and I was wondering if for the additional price they were getting something I don't have. From this review I'm guessing they are not. I was considering buying Endnotes. I…

The problem is not with your PowerBook. Website problems are generally caused by browsers or coding. In this case it is coding in the stylesheet. I notice they have a style direction of "overflow: hidden" and that may be the bug. You can get around it by turning off the stylesheet in some browsers or, in some browser, using the spacebar to scroll. If you go to pages other than the home page, most of…

Thanks for your courteous reply. Your responses to comments are appreciated. I particularly appreciated the uninstall instructions I found in response to a user's comment. I do feel that notes about updates should not generally be in the comments section, except as responses to user comments.

I noticed the same thing and completely agree. I couldn't help but wonder if the developer intended to push unfavorable comments off the page.

I solved the mystery. I had enlarged the size of the cursor, probably using Mighty Mouse which I was trying out at the time.
