Calories 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

The Right Stuff

This is an excellent program that does what it should and more. The database is very large. The interface is excellent. (You can copy your breakfast from one day to the next.) The nutrition information is encyclopedic. The daily, weekly, monthly summaries are great. What is needed? A help file (what is NFS anyway?), perhaps a few preferences, but for now that is it. Oh yes, I will also need a little discipline. [alert admin]

HandBrake 0.7.0-beta3 (Mac OS X)

What the doctor ordered...

I give college-level physics lectures and I like to illustrate certain topics with short clips from "current movies". For this I need a program to extract the video and audio from specific DVD chapters so that I can play the segment on my Apple Powerbook using QuickTime. This program is perfect. It is easy to use, does exactly what I want, and produces a high quality "avi" or "mp4" file, whichever I choose. Congratulations to the authors. [alert admin]

MathType 5.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

MathType is Back!

After a long wait, version 5 is available for the Mac. I am runnng Panther 10.3.3 and everything has gone exceedingly well. First, I deleted all MathType v3.7 files, yes, all of them. The "uninstaller" missed some but OS X found the rest. Then I installed v5.0 and it is working perfectly. The connections to Microsoft Word v10.1.4 were made correctly and are also working perfectly. After installing OS X some 15 months ago, I am now back in business with MathType. I did not wait for the 30-day, full, free trial to expire. I paid immediately and it is worth every (Euro)cent. Design Science: You "guys" do good work. [alert admin]

Apple iCal 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)

One step forward; one step back iCal v1.5.1

I can now use all kinds of sounds as alarms. Good. But I used to be able to get a sound at a certain time without any message. Now I seem to be condemned to getting a message with every sound. I use the sounds as audible reminders of time but that does not seem desirable in this new, improved version. Sigh. [alert admin]

I just went…

from v.1.2.3 to v2.0.0b1 and it is, indeed, a beta version. The reaction time when I give a macro hot key (to type the date, for example) is excruciatingly long when compared to the earlier version. Sometimes I have to give the command two or three timed to get the attention of the Maestro. I hope this will soon be fixed. [alert admin]

Bravo to Apple!…

This upgrade fixed a few minor irritations, went smoothly, and is now running with all my USB gadgets. Other upgrades shoud do as well... [alert admin]
