iCab X 4.0 (Mac OS X)

iCab is back!

I used iCab back in the good old OS 9 days but gave up on it as OS X matured and several competitive browsers came on the scene. I'm very happy to see this new reincarnation of iCab. I thought it was lost and gone forever. But now it's like meeting an old familiar friend once again but who has finally grown up and matured. This new version is so far really excellent. Very nice. I'm happy. [alert admin]

Goldfish Aquarium 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

I realize it's nice eye candy, but.....

Screensavers come from the old CRT days. Modern CRTs (not many available anymore) and specifically LCD panels don't suffer burn in. Screensavers were also used a security device (locked the screen until the user logs back in). But with LCD panels you are not doing yourself a favor using a screensaver. Having the screen on shortens its life. Let the screen go blank and use log-in security for security. LCDs come on instantly (unlike old CRTs which need time to come up to proper operating temp). From a LCD panel manufacturer: "Using a screensaver with a flat panel or LCD screen actually reduces the lifetime of the display since the backlight remains lit and ages faster than it would if the screen was turned off completely." "Screensaver" is kind of an oxymoron in this respect. I'm puzzled as to why people spend money to lessen the life of their expensive LCD screens. Oh well, each to their own. p.s., the fish are cute; it is nicely done. [alert admin]

EasyBatchPhoto 2.2 (Mac OS X)

Nice little program...BUT

This little program does work and is fine for certain applications. However, it unfortunately does not preserve color space. And that is its big issue in my usage.

I need it to keep color space tags (it now reverts all embedded files to your monitor/system's space). So, it doesn't work as a converter in a color managed workflow, whereas Photoshop does (although PS is not as "quick and easy" to use as is EasyBatchPhoto).

Things like this are still important even if you are only converting images for the web (and yes, not all web browsers can recognize embedded color space tags and so you might want to keep them in sRGB for example. With EBP you will have to go back and convert each file).

Hopefully, this will be addressed some day. I do recommend this app and am simply noting what I see as a real shortcoming for me. It's fine for email, etc..

PowerMail 5.2 (Mac OS X)

A very stable and robust mail client

I've been using Powermail for around 3 years now and find that it's extremely stable. The interface is clear and intuitive and not cluttered like other programs (Apple Mail and Eudora, e.g.). Filters work well, and it does all that one would expect from an email client. The program is robust and straightforward. It's a great application. The issues others have here make no sense. Everything is well documented. There is help here: http://www.ctmdev.com/lists_requests.html. And also here: http://home.hpo.net/timm/PowerMailFAQ.html. And here: http://www.ctmdev.com/faq.html. And here: http://www.ctmdev.com/documentation/manual.html. What more do you want? This program works and does the job very well --and that's one of the reasons it's so highly rated by the media. Adobe Reader 6.0.3a (Mac OS X)

Confusing Update: Try This

It is a bit confusing. This is the only way I could do it: Trashed my current version(6.0) then downloaded the 6.0.1 version from Adobe (it's the only one available on their site that I could find). Then installed 6.0.1 and updated it from within the appilcation with Adobe's software update under Help on the menu bar. That got me to 6.0.2. Then I downloaded 6.0.3 from here in VersionTracker. That's the only way I could update. Or just wait for 7.0 which is coming out soon. [alert admin]

Mozilla Firefox 1.0 (Mac OS X)

My primary browser, but...

I like a lot about Firefox and I'm using it now as my primary browser. I like the extras that other developers are building such as FoxyTunes and FireFTP. But a big thing that I see is missing (maybe I'm just not seeing it?!?) are services in Mac OS X. Services is something I used all the time in Safari. It's necessary for research on the net, etc.. Most all new apps use them (DEVONthink, etc.). It doesn't seem to work with Firefox. Am I overlooking something? Otherwise, a nice browser. [alert admin]

I bought this right away!

This is really amazing software. It's the most important program running on my Mac at this moment. I use it every day. But I just wish it also had Mad Cow alerts and had an Ebola alert and a SARS alert and Michael Jackson alerts. If the developer would just offer these small additions then I would feel safe enough to cancel my tabloid newspaper subscription. Maybe in the next version? [alert admin]

CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro 3.0B3 (Mac OS X)

Where are these "prices?"

Either I'm blind, stupid or both but I don't see any actual prices mentioned anywhere for this version. I'm considering buying it (I'm trying out the v.2x demo right now) and all I see on the website is a "end-of-year sale" price for the v.2x and a page about this 3.beta version and that the beta will expire in January. No mention of v.3 costs or upgrade price, etc.. They do say that there will soon be a "lite" version of VirtualDesktop Pro v.3. I see no prices here or at the developer's website. They do say that if I buy v.2.x now, I'll get 3.0 free later. But I still see no price for v.3. So where is everybody gettting all this "huge ugrade price" info?......do you think that the developer is going to charge ALL current users the "end-of-year sale" price of $22.50 to upgrade? That's only an assumption and it's not at all specified on the website..... [alert admin]

VueScan 7.6.72 (Mac OS X)

Why? Because it's the author's choice.

While most people are sitting on their couch playing Wrath of the Drunken Clan Monkeys, members of the Linux and the Open Source community are hard at work developing GPL software, patches and fixes. Developers benefit from this and eventually so do end users of commercial software. And software like Vuescan, which is ported to Linux, will benefit from input by active Linux developers. They have paid some of their dues already, and the author of Vuescan is acknowledging that. Anyway, it's not that big a freebie since there are other printer and scanner drivers already developed for Linux (and free, too.) Why don't you also complain to Adobe and Microsoft and Macromedia and Apple, etc.. They give massive discounts to educators. An educator can buy the Adobe Creative Suite Premium from the Academic Superstore for less than a third of the street price. And some university faculty and admins make $100,000 plus a year...... Geezz....

Don't you just love it when the developers and/or their employees post glowing reviews of their own products. These aren't honest reviews, they are sales pitches. See PressDude's only other two posts on VersionTracker.....

Not Ready (for who?)

Check his/her posts and you will see that Brass Hammer makes bitter negative comments on shareware programs. Unfortunately he/she has a big chip on their shoulder. Mellel was not designed for paralegals who have to crank out their employer's work on a daily basis. Therefore it may not be perfect for everyone. btw, it was originally designed for use by linguists and other academics.

Non-income earning Luddites?

uh, I guess one insult is due another. How's this for an income earning proposition: Your job is about as valuable as a lead weight on a sinking ship. Since you are overpaid (left over from the days when you actually had some value), replacing you with cheaper labor is the easiest way to make more capital. There are (literally) millions of people out there who could fill your shoes for a lot less (or…

Your iBook problems

Your iBook logic board issues are a KNOWN problem with your iBook. It is a major processor manufacturing fault that Apple knows about (read all the Mac forums) You may end up replacing it over and over again (some people have had to do it 3x already) Make sure you have Apple Care and sell the thing when the time is right.
