Since upgrading to the latest edition I have noticed that smcfancontrol no longer boots when starting (icon in menu bar doesn't show. Also the Macbook Pro is a bit warmer than before (because I had the fan speed set a bit higher to keep it cooler through the app?). Well, found out that regardless of whether the app is run at start up or after starting through the Utilities menu it doesn't run. I'd be careful running with this app. No response from the author or at his web site. Sorry, but this is a no-go for me... with a running app there is no way to confirm the operation. [alert admin]

SpeedTools Utilities 2.8.1 (Mac OS X)
FYI if you want to look at the User Forum for this developer it seems that there is NO SEPARATE Signup for it. Either it's broken or you have to be a purchaser of the products to use it, because clicking the forum on their web site takes you nowhere. So be careful looking for support from the developers on this product. As others have pointed out here it's looking to be an expensive bundle, relative recent updates, but with no apparent or active support. And while the updates are aupposedly free, how does the developer get feedback if their links are broken? How about a coupon discount program that's actually publicized? The neat app Hi Cap, is available separately but this bundled toolset does have its appeal if they all work! [alert admin]

DiskWarrior 4.1.1 (Mac OS X)
Longer time user and fan of DW. However, I see from the Alsoft web pages that DW4.1.1 as currently supplied with the updated software, on DVD will NOT start up late 2008, newer Macs (according to Alsoft, Apple hasn't released the necessary drivers). Sorry, but the sale of your software depends on, and is part of its ability to work with currently available Macs. My old version 3.0.3 won't work with any machines I presently use, what's it worth? When it was current, I could make a startup disk that worked. I needed that on several occasions. So if you expect me to upgrade to 4.x, then please supply a version of software that will (or can be made to) run on today's machines. Until that, no thanks! And, as good as it is at rebuilding, I can't recommend your product to anyone else because it lacks the ability to get your drive out of trouble in the event of a crash. It's TechTool for me, at least for now... Even if it is half the retail list for the Upgrade DVD (no download). [alert admin]

The disclaimer notes that this product is only for FM version 10 (Filemaker). Do not use if you have earlier versions. Some nasty things may occur when running this under previous versions of Filemaker. [alert admin]

NoobProof 1.4 Public Beta 1 (Mac OS X)
I tried Noobproof to resolve a security issue with my desktop installation and some concerns with Apple's latest Firewall. My issues have to do with PCI compliance on my desktop MacOS OS X 10.5.5 (Leopard). Noobproof has specific handles that I need to control both TCP and UDP port issues that I found only in way more expensive utilities. Since NoobProof is free (donations only), I figured to give it a try. Should say that I consider my self a newbie to port control, esp. on MacOS. Have done some reading as to security issues and found a lot of info in the public domain refuting the idea that Mac are somehow impervious to being hacked into. The serious security guys are certainly saying that most of the 'holes' though Windows prone are certainly available to Mac hackers as well. Apple clearly believes it too as they have patched the big ones recently and continue to do so. The problem with an 'easy-to-use' system like OS X (open GUI? is that the right term??) is that the IP ports are purposely rendered invisible to the GUI and are difficult to see status on to control. Well, this software solves some visibility and control issues. What you, the user, choose to do with all that power in NoobProof, that is up to you. So I would urge caution in using this software, especially if you don't know what you want to do or have any advice on what to turn on both with NoobProof and Apple's Firewall (which NoobProof uses). NoobProof is basically a scripting tool for Apple Firewall and they do not reinvent that wheel (nor should they). All said, I think NoobProof is very good with the tools they use. For me right now it seems to do the trick. I'd actually rate it 3 1/2 stars if there were such a thing. There is a learning curve and when proficient with it, I may come back and rate it higher. This is my initial review. Kudos to the authors! [alert admin]

Avery DesignPro 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Avery DesignPro Mac OS X is buggy! While it is free, and quite functional, I had it crash my system twice now, and it saves completed forms in quirky ways, sometimes not saving them or saving a blank form where there should have been data. Also the support in India or whereever, has no clue about these issues. Their basic answer to almost any question is delete the application and re-install it, and oh-by-the-way delete cookies in your browser before you download... I found that when DesignPro crashes it screws up lots of things, requiring permissions repairs in Disk Utility and crashing other apps that happen to be open at the same time. It is true that reinstalling the app/package does temporarily fix the problem however. This is a non-standard app, so beware Mac heads! [alert admin]

Nikon PictureProject 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
PictureProject takes over downloading on OS 10.5
I found an old copy of PictureProject apps on my drive. PP Transfer takes over when I attach any media with pictures and I can't get it to not come up (I suppose except for uninstalling it and dragging prefs to the trash). I hear the new version is not so hot so thinking to ditch it altogether. Use only intermittently. [alert admin]

Here are my thoughts on the Avery Design Pro version 1.0.0 Software for Mac was tried on a MacPro OS X 10.5.4: PRO 1. Clearly this is version 1 of hopefully more fully developed versions to come. However my overall rating is 4.0 out of 5 stars! 2. Really good UI, very intuitive. Seems to work well for basic label design and output. My original needs were pretty small- layout of sheets of return labels from address book or manually input. I chose the latter. 3. Uses all the Avery label models listed by their numbers (obviously brand Avery) not by size of labels. You get an on screen graphic of one label you are editing. You can progress through the sheet of labels and custom build each one. 4. You can select from sub-categroies of labels by type on the layout screen that opens with the program. You cna also open previous saved labels. 5. All KINDS and manner of customizable formats and elements for each label- pictures, graphics, gradations, backgrounds, foreground clip art, pictures, text, rounded, shaped text elements for rounded labels, etc. I haven't wades through all the myriad possibilities. 6. Large edit window to place your text and other elements. You can set up each label differently or all the same. 'All the same' is an on screen button on top of the edit screen which takes the top left label and duplicate it through the page. 7. Thorough user manual. CON 1. My one complaint is the clunkiness and poor performance of the page linearity correction (for lack of a better term), AKA Calibrate printer. The calibrate feature works on only one printer my laserjet. I found a way to fudge it is simply ignore set up and go straight to adjustment. In the calibrate feature (if it should happen to work for you, good luck!) they attempt to fix/adjust the top and bottom of the label pages for errors in the printer. It plainly doesn't work as intended. First off the label placement is from the top left, the adjustment is from the center, then the only adjustment is of vertical linearity. You can't center the page with this adjustment! Second. If, as in my case, the top of the page variation is different than the bottom, then you're simply out of luck. Third, there is no margin adjustment. 2. The update from within the program's own menu doesn't work. To check for updates there is a menu item in the File menu but it doesn't go to the internet as it seems to want to do. Gives an error. 3. No means to import from a mailing list, addressbook, or any database. I hope they fix the complaints in version 2. This program has real potential! In the meanwhile use for the most basic work and hope that someone improves it soon! It's free for now. [alert admin]

I was almost ready to try it... From their web site, though, the TryIt tab is broken. That sent up warning flags and brought me here for the straight scoop. Here I read the sad facts that M$ is less concerned about the product and more about its value to boost Office and/or tie into other products like the Expression lineup. It's hardly an Adobe killer, even though they tried to bundle Expression Media as…

You could have said in your comments on Bento 1 that a limitation to it is that you could not see or change the database beyond two years. Has this changed in Bento 2? That's one example of an worthwhile review and/or flaw in the program. Instead you chose to tell all of us in great detail of the trouble that just trying Bento was for you. Spare us the agony, please! Sadly though, I…

I found that at least one form in the DesignPro app Avery #11201 will NOT save and the support's answer is to use the Windows version as it's at 5.4 not 1.0.0 as the Mac version. Obviously they have NO upgrade path for a crippled version of Mac software. This is nutty! Also their version of installer is such that you can't uninstall it completely. Both resources and prefs are stored elsewhere and not easily…

I should add that horizontal adjustments work exactly as the vertical- from the center of the page. There are horizontal adjustments, just not good ones. My rating stands.
