Flip4Mac WMV 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

A seamless way to play those accursed WMVs.

Flip4Mac has worked very well playing back WMV files that I have previously not been able to view even with other movie viewers (e.g. windows media 9). The application is nearly seamless. The Microsoft Office suite does crash when accessing the project manager and I have one video that is not decoding properly, but overall very nice! [alert admin]

ArtRage 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Amzingly nice for the price

I admit that I was uncertain about downloading ArtRage 2 considering some of the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it out. The response is quite good, even with a decent size image file (30-35 MB). I think the interface is helpful and responsive with a good selection of tools.

I did have some trouble with the blending of brush strokes and would like some more brush options (turning off changing brush size with pressure?). Nonetheless, this is turning out to be a useful application for inexpensive sketching and digital painting. [alert admin]

Path Finder 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Nice new version, but a few growing pains

Version 4 has been long awaited and there are some great features. I've been using Path Finder for almost two years and haven't seen the Finder in sooo long! The tabs and instant directory updating of version 4 make the upgrade very attractive. The new enhanced find and select features are great as well.

Even so, this initial release has its share of bugs to remove. For one, I find it to be much less stable. The past several days have been good though (crossin' the fingers!). Second, the left drawer just doesn't want to stay open. There are a few other oddities, but none should prevent one from using PF4. [alert admin]

Carrara 5.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Fantastic all-around 3D

Carrara has really been shaping up to be a capable and feature-rich application for 3D stills and animation; and one for a very reasonable price. The latest release does not disappoint with a much cleaner interface and the addition of complex modeling functions (among other things!).

One seemingly overlooked addition in this release is the inclusion of a library of excellent looking shaders. In terms of rendering quality, Carrara has impressive speed and fantastic results.

My only major gripe is the speed of manipulating rigged characters. As you start to get towards some high-end models it can slow down much more than I would have expected. I will keep experimenting though! [alert admin]

shivering kittens 1.4-2 (Mac OS X)

I agree... needs more polishing

The controls seem to work fine, but the graphics display was very wrong on my system. When the kittens touched ground, they flew up about 50 degrees and started stacking up near the middle of the screen. Also, the lack of mac-like conventions (new game, pause, quit menu items) is noticeable. A little more work would go a long way. [alert admin]

One more vote for an update!

PageSucker has worked very well, but under Tiger freezes often. I would also pay for an upgrade. [alert admin]

Alias SketchBook Pro 1.1 (Mac OS X)

good promise...

A really nice start to an application that has some significant promise for professional digital artists. The interface is fun and quick, but there are some obvious omissions in the feature set. If Alias could maintain the funtionality of the interface and add some necessary elements (selections, layer masks, photoshop compatibility, fill/gradient tools, paper textures, etc.) then they might really have something. Honestly guys, I know you don't want to "scare" artists away with too much technical mumbo-jumbo, but give us some credit! I'll keep on eye on the app (while you're at it, add in resolution-independent brushes... I miss LivePicture!). [alert admin]

iView MediaPro 2.0.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

I agree on the price issue

I think iView MediaPro is a pretty nice application, but I agree with other posters regarding the price issue. I have yet to purchase either iView application (regular or pro), but I just can't imagine spending the HUGE price difference on the pro application when the only thing I'm interested in are the advanced slide show operations. If the pro application were $60 or so, or the basic app upgraded to that price (and put in some features that exist now in only the pro app) then I would certainly buy it. Food for thought, I suppose. [alert admin]

Amazing!

PageSucker does what it is supposed to do and does it well. It's speed is seemingly unmatched by other applications in the same genre. It provides numerous option for customized filtering of content and best of all the price is so reasonable that it makes registration a no-brainer. Great job! [alert admin]

BackgroundSaver 1.2.4 (Mac OS X)

fun and promising

Really neat to have some screen savers on the desktop. However, I can't get the application to start-up on login. Also, as previously mentioned, the "gmon.out" file at the root level is a 10MB eyesore. A little bit of tweaking and it will be a really nice little application. Looking forward to it. [alert admin]

To Aggro...

To the best of my knowledge this does not replicate any other Carracho tool. Unlike other "log analyzers", Carracho Informant is for people who want to know what is happening now, not what has happened. I find it useful and it's free, so please rate it based on what it is and not what you think it should be.
