Drive Genius 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Avoid v2.0.1

Just tried to defrag with Drive Genius 2.0.1 under 10.5.2. Hung at 0.6% progress, wouldn't cancel, so I went to quit and then got a cancel message that did cancel, then I found that the drive had been damaged. Disk Utility could not see it. Re-booted and then I was able to repair it with Disk Utility - some problem with volume header info. Luckily I had taken a bootable clone before trying to defrag, but this is very poor behaviour for a disk utility. I was trying to defrag my main drive from my bootable clone. [alert admin]

Winclone 1.6.6 (Mac OS X)

Good product, responsive developer

It does what it says on the can. Good for resizing the partition as well as just back-ups. Contacted the developer about a minor glitch with 1.6.5 and hours later 1.6.6 came along - good work! [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5160.0 (Mac OS X)

This time, a painless upgrade!

v5160 upgraded my eventually-fixed v5158 with absolutely no trouble at all. This one left me with a fully working Parallels and Boot Camp partition first time around. Very good to see them address a troubled upgrade so promptly. I can cautiously recommend the product again, although it will take a few more easy upgrades to wash out the taste of my experience of the previous version. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5158.0 (Mac OS X)

Win re-boot after update hung the Mac repeatedly

Until now my experience with Parallels has been very positive. No problems with any previous updates. This one has been a nightmare. After installing the new version of Tools the re-booting Win instance hung, crashing the Mac as well and requiring a hard re-boot. This happened over a dozen times. I have now got things working again following a complete clean install of Win on Boot Camp and numerous Safe Mode restarts of Win XP Pro under Parallels. I have no idea what finally allowed it to update Parallels Tools correctly, apart from sheer bloody-mindedness. I have had to re-activate Windows several times in the last week, explaining the problem over the phone because the automated facility unsurprisingly kicked me out after so many visits in a short time. Reading the Parallels support forums, this appears to have been a problem with some earlier versions, so it is very disappointing that something so damaging has still not been fixed. When it works it is very good, and it runs some fussy software very well. Updates are clearly not routinely successful, however. Cannot recommend this at present. [alert admin]

NeoOffice 2.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Good effort all round...

NeoOffice is a good product and the developers keep it up-to-date with frequent patches and revisions. Not unnaturally, they ask for a donation along the way - that is absolutely nothing to complain about and certainly no reason to rate it a measly one-star. If you don't like cookies just delete them. It's good and it's free. More power to their elbows. [alert admin]

SafariPlus 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)

1.6a1 - good product, minor bugs

A very good product to cover the big gap in cookie management in Safari v3 beta. Simple interface, easy to use. A couple of crashes with this alpha release, but no great problem - end result is good. Thanks for a nice app. [alert admin]

Exif Untrasher 1.4.3 (Mac OS X)

Excellent!

I had some corrupted pics in iPhoto since my previous back-up - using TextEdit to compare them with readable files it was clear that the header info was missing. This little app salvaged the original, deleted files from my camera's CF card with absolutely no trouble at all. Thank you [alert admin]

Tide Widget 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Nice widget once the geography is fixed

An interesting widget if you live near the coast - saves getting your feet wet! Some dodgy geography around the British Isles and the North Atlantic regarding which countries and islands belong to which other countries, but that doesn't affect the functionality, it just makes it a bit confusing to find your nearest tide measurement station. I look forward to the fix. [alert admin]

ATI Displays 4.5.7 (Mac OS X)

Download links do not work

Has anybody found a working URL? Even using IE, which shows more than Safari on some of the site's pages, does not work. [alert admin]

Don't Use Version Tracker to Download Updates

USD40 for one year of updates, USD80 for ever - it's pretty clear on his web site.... And another USD40 gets you an upgrade to the upgrade-for-ever pro version anyway. Good luck with finding an older copy, though - somebody is bound to have one backed-up somewhere.

NOT compatible with 10.4.8 on MacBooks

I have just found the same thing on my MacBook/10.4.8. Connection was so slow as to be virtually useless. I quit Coconutwifi and everything recovered instantly. It took some finding, though...
