Apple Safari 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Happy with this update

Definite (and much-needed) improvement in performance on pages with Java. You'll be happy with this. G5 PPC, 10.4.11 [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2009-005 (Mac OS X)

Seems OK

I noticed that this update spent an unusually long time on the Configuring Installation stage right at the start, particularly on my G4, with the sound of lots of disk activity. After that it went OK, although also quite a long restart. The usual Shockwave permissions to repair because of the Flash update, of course. All seems well, though. iBookG4 and DP G5 10.4.11 [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2009-003 (Mac OS X)

2009-003: All OK here

Installed 2009-003 on my G4 iBook and G5 tower, both without apparent issue. Usual stack of Shockwave permissions to repair. Note that this security update does not force you to upgrade to Safari 4 (unlike what we read about the 10.5.8 System update), so you can continue to use Safari version 3 on lower-end systems. Like my G4. [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2009-002 (Mac OS X)

Install Security Update first, then Safari

Safari 3.2.3 shows up in Software Update after Security Update 2009-002 is installed. So install the Security Update first. [alert admin]

Apple Java for OS X 10.4 Release 8 (Mac OS X)

Definite improvement

Installed without problem on iBook G4 and PPC G5, both running OS 10.4.11. Java is much snappier and more responsive now. Good job, Apple. [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2008-007 (Mac OS X)

All OK here

Installed without issue on G4 iBook and on G5 DP PPC. Restart on the G5 DP seems noticeably snappier, too. Any more updates and they'll have to call it 10.4.12. Ian [alert admin]

Stellarium 0.10.0 (Mac OS X)

Won't launch!

Won't launch on my G5 PPC 10.4.11. Previous version works OK though. Ian [alert admin]

Camino 1.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Fails the Acid Test

Like Firefox it fails the Acid2 test, which Safari passes, but scores better than Safari on Acid 3. Ian [alert admin]

Happy with this update

Apologies for my sloppy terminology. The release notes make it clear that it is JavaScript rather than Java that is affected.

Permission repair

Yes, tons of permission repairs under 10.6.2, none under 10.4.11

Permissions - lots of permission problems

Did you check permissions before you ran the updater? If not, how do you know the update caused the problem? I have screensful of permission repairs each time I run Disk Utility on 10.5.7, but we've been told before on MacFixit not to worry about them.

Installer Hangs On "Destination Select"

Apple does point out that you need the latest security patch installed first.

No problems here

Ditto. I never installed 7.4 or 7.4.1 so can't vouch for those. But this installed perfectly on an iBook G4 and PPC G5 both running 10.4.11 (no permissions needed repair). It successfully runs MP4 videos with sound on the NASA website in Safari 3.0.4 and 3.1.

permission repair

Flash always produces pages of permission repairs. In fact I always run Disk Utility twice to ensure nothing has been overlooked on the first pass. Apart from that, this update installed without problem and runs fine, both on an iBook G4 with Safari 3.1 and on a PPC G5 with Safari 3.0.4. OS 10.4.11 in both cases. Ian

Requires 10.5.2

The system requirements for Tiger are stated to be 10.4.11 "or later". Is this an official hint that there is a version 10.4.12 to come?

Solid, well-designed, intuitive?

I wouldn't describe it as well-designed or intuitive, at least not by comparison with Vicomsoft FTP Client. I like the way Vicomsoft shows the contents of my local disk and the server side by side so I can simply drag from one to the other. IanR
