Sawmill 7.2.8 (Mac OS X)

Bonkers pricing structure

So I go to the developer's website and they have the most ridiculous pricing structure which starts at £64 for one profile (what's a profile?) and goes up to £11,000. Then I notice that you can earn credits towards a licence by testing the application and sending reports to the developer for thngs that don't work. Why on Earth would I want to pay huge amounts of money for something that is: a) being tested by amateurs b) Still being tested! Sawmill, you're having a laugh! [alert admin]

PMX 2.28 (Mac OS X)

Not very impressed

While the interface and basic functionality of this software looks good, I had some problems. Dragging tasks around seemed buggy. However, what I really wanted this software for was to import MS Project files and be able to export them again, thereby avoiding having to use a PC. The MS Project import sucks though. Importing an existing Project 2000 file resulted in a project where many of the dates had shifted unpredictably and tasks had been converted to one-day milestones. The help file was not detailed enough to offer a possible cause or solution, and my email to the developer went unanswered. Maybe they took offence because I suggested that in my opinion, the product wasn't worth what I had paid for it ( I did purchase the full version). If you're working on a Mac platform and don't need to import or export to MS Project format, this seems like it would be quite good, however, in my experience, this isn't a cross-platform solution. I'm also not impressed that the developer chose to ignore an enquiry from a registered user. The program is in the wastebasket, and it ain't coming back out. [alert admin]

Captain FTP 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Solved all my problems in one hit

I develop mostly in Dreamweaver, but the DW FTP client sucks big time and setting up SSH tunneling is a nightmare. When I found Captain FTP these problems were solved. It's compact code, with an excellent "tiger-esque" interface. Connections using SSH are a complete doddle. I really like the way that this program opens servers in tabs. Frequently-used servers can be placed as shortcuts on the toolbar. It also integrates nicely with external editors like Dreamweaver and BBedit. The sign of a good piece of software is that you never have to read the manual, because the operation is what you guess that it would be. Captain FTP fits exactly into this category and is one of the neatest and most used software packages that I have. [alert admin]
