Parallels Desktop 5.0 (Mac OS X)

Upgrade price of $50 is excessive.

I too purchased v.4 not long ago at its full price, in May of 2009. Asking me for $50 now to upgrade to v. 5 is excessive. V. 4 is working adequately for me in Snow Leopard. If v.5 is worth it, I might consider paying $30, but that is my line-in-the-sand. Particularly since I recently paid for the full v.4. My 1 star poor rating is based entirely on the upgrade price, not on the functionality of either v. 4 or 5. [alert admin]

SOHO Notes 8.03 (Mac OS X)

It is faster than v.7 & that is it.

v.8 opens and seems to work faster than previous versions, at least it does for me in Snow Leopard. I gave this a straight average rating of 3 stars mainly because, for all that it does, it just does a bit too much in some areas and lacks some seemingly simple things common in other programs. For example, as far as I can tell it still has no way to highlight selected text, which to me is a simple and necessary feature for a notes program. Yet the program has a zillion other features (most of which I do not use). I have also never been thrilled by the fact that SOHO Notes uses a separately created and produced database called OpenBase. Installation, uninstallation, & updating of SOHO Notes is made more complicated by OpenBase. OpenBase is NOT Chronos software. I had a problem with SOHO Notes v.7 updating which locked me out of my own database completely until I realized I had to select the additional installation of the database engine in the SOHO installer, which (for some reason) was not selected by default. If SOHO Notes must have a database ( and not separate files for each note), then Chronos should write and maintain their own database. Actually, I prefer that a notes program maintain each note in a separate file (which I think is a safer and more flexible approach). I really only recommend SOHO Notes to those who like some feature or features that SOHO Notes has that separate it from other software. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 4.0 Build 3846 (Mac OS X)

Application working OK, but support system stinks.

I am not having any serious trouble with the application, but their support system stinks. It is impersonal and unusable for me. I even tried to post in their forums but their site seems to have a dual login process and it is only partially working for me. I login Parallels site, but then when I try to login to be able to post in their forums I get a weird message that my User Name already exists. Well no kidding, it is me. Why will their site let me login to their site and even see my account info but not let me post in their forums? Because of poor support I can only give an overall Neutral rating and neither recommend or not recommend Parallels. [alert admin]

Quicken 2007 R3 (Mac OS X)

Blah

I never did get this or prior versions to work with my bank (Bank of America), even after contacting Quicken support. Plus the interface is junk. Only reason I even use it for my checkbook (manually inputed data) is because I paid for it. [alert admin]

SOHO Notes 7.0.7 (Mac OS X)

Confusing Installer and Uninstallers still fail

I finally got Notes 7 to work in Snow leopard. The installer does not automatically update the database, you have to check the box in installer. HOWEVER, I still can not get the uninstallers for Notes 7 or the database Engine to launch in Snow Leopard. I get message that I need Admin Privileges. But I am the Administrator. I even tried creating a second Admin Account and they still will not launch. [alert admin]

A warning about iDefrag

Slight correction. It was not the "optimization" I requested long ago, it was the "Full Defragment" feature. Recalling from my memory, I think the author recommended running Metadata and then Optimization to do a thorough job. I suggested there be a single choice that will do both and he created the Full Defragment.

A warning about iDefrag

I am one of those a long time ago that recommended to iDefrag that they include an Optimization feature. The words defragmenting and optimization have sometimes meant different things to different people. It is my understanding that defragmenting means the piecing back together of separated files into their complete contiguous file, & optimization means both to defragment files AND pushing all files together to get rid of separated free space. iDefrag seems to do both.…

Concerned.

As you can see from this email exchange with them last year, they acknowlege that iGlasses installs code in Cocoa apps, including TinkerTool (which has nothing to do with cams or video). It even caused an issue of getting error messages. They do not indicate here there is any way to exclude specific apps from having this code installed in them. I do not wear a tinfoil hat, I have a brain and I use…

Adobe pretending iPhoto does not exist?

Interesting. It seems to me that iPhoto should be discussed within Photoshop Elements help files if they are supposed to work so well together. I am looking for a user-friendly and decent photo editor, and did not like PE 4 (bloated and not user-friendly). Also, PE4 DID NOT work well with iPhoto. I consistently had problems seeing photos in iPhoto that were edited in PE4. Considering the high upgrade price of $60 for PE6, I…

Concerned.

Exactly what I said. I corresponded with company that made this program and they confirm it. By email to me they say they do indeed load code into all cocoa applications, regardless whether or not the program has anything to do with cams.

1.5.3 is not Leopard Compatible?

1.5.3 run as an application is not compatible with Leopard? Well, I am not clear on what you mean. V.1.5.3 is an application. Your competing with the likes of Alsoft DiskWarrior (the king of Mac OS X utilities). It is true they charge similar for upgrades and I have paid it, however, I don't plan to pay for a whole load of such premium utilities high upgrade costs. So, I now choose to keep…
