Docker 1.6.1 (Mac OS X)

brilliant, sublime, functional, essential

If you're not using Docker, you're not fully utilising OS X. Once in a blue moon, someone writes a simple program that transforms OS X. The functionality of Docker is so obvious and brilliant, it is sublime. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 4.0b (Mac OS X)

speed up, slow down

Safari 4 is fast and sites like Gmail work now. However, there is so much more mouse movement to create tabs and reload web pages that navigating Safari is actually slower. Speed up, slow down. To do serious research, having the Tab bar below the Bookmarks bar is faster and more functional than having Tabs above the Toolbar. It's distracting to have tabs change dimensions. The eye wants consistency so it can scan data quickly. There was nothing wrong with the features in the old custom toolbar menu. Bring it back. A properly laid out menu bar is much faster and more functional than Top Site. Top Site is pointless and silly. Proper use of the Bookmarks and Bookmarks bar is faster, more powerful and more compact than Top Site. [alert admin]

LimeWire 5 Beta 5.0.4 (Mac OS X)

it works, new interface

It works. Loading is faster. The Interface is new and intuitive to use. The set up is kind of like Limewire for dummies and is easier. It's beta. Seems stable. Hasn't crashed yet. using an alum iMac, 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM, OS 105.6 [alert admin]

Silverkeeper 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

run, run faraway and never look back

Source is 86GB. Destination is 150GB. This version of Silverkeeper repeatedly says that the Destination is too small. What kind of arithmetic is this? This software is written by a company selling hard drives that have a history of chronic and unremitting failures. Do a web search if you don't believe me. This is bad software. Run, run faraway. Leopard Cache Cleaner 4.0.17 (Mac OS X)

an admin password is a small price to pay

I've been using Tiger and Leopard Cache Cleaners for a long time and when the software asks for an admin password, I type my password so the software can do several tasks to tidy up and optimise my Macbook. I do not understand why some users have issues with using an admin password but a password seems a small price to pay so that no one unwarranted is mucking up your computer. The gains far outweigh the extra step. I actually use a handful of utilities for maintenance and I think that's a good idea because Leopard Cache Cleaner has features others do not have. If there is any redundancy, that's acceptable for the unique features it has. [alert admin]

MacCleanse 1.3 (Mac OS X)

it works if you read the instructions

I read the instructions, set the preferences and selected the files I wanted deleted. MacClease deleted only the files I selected and immediately recovered 5GB of disk space. It worked the first time I tried it. I am no Einstein but this is not difficult software to use. The instructions are minimal and if I was unsure what I was deleting, the information panel told me what I was doing in plain English. I can think of more complex software or confusing procedures to do what MacCleanse does so handily but that doesn't seem like a productive use of time and energy. [alert admin]

Music Man 2.7 (Mac OS X)

converts flac files to mp3

I use Music Man to convert flac, wav and ogg files to mp3. I select CONVERT in the menu because I want to convert. The next window says "Drag and drop any item from the Finder, that you want to convert, into this area". It's obvious what I have to do so I drag and drop files and folders into the appropriate big box. I select the format and the destination. I go do something else and after a short time, the files are converted. I edit the information to add the artist and album. I do not understand why some people insist the software is not intuitive. There is no need to be intuitive. There is a menu and also one-sentence instructions on screen. I am not a rocket science but i am also not an idiot. I just follow the instructions. This is the best software to convert flac, ogg and other formats. If there is something better, I have not found it and I used almost everything on the market. [alert admin]

Media Snap 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Version 1.1 works like a CHARM ++++++++

Ask and you shall receive. I sent a simple bug report to the developer last night and in less than 24 hours he fixed the bug as he promised. Version 1.1 is available from the developer's web site. Version 1.1 has a new feature that allows the option of playing the movie fullscreen on YouTube. I can now download movies to the desktop that play in QT. I'm a dumb enduser. If I can do it, anyone can do it. This product is intuitive to use, amazingly fast and infinitely more convenient than the online service I was previously using. I'm using an old MacBook Intel Core Duo, 1.83GHz, 2GB RAM, Leopard 10.5.2 [alert admin]

Media Snap 1.0 (Mac OS X)

So Simple

It took me less than a minute to figure out the software: Search, Download, Select Format, Send to Desktop, Play. It is so simple that some people find it challenging. I had a problem playing movies so I wrote the programmer and this is his response: "Thanks for reporting. I will fix this today. Please check the Media Snap website for an update within the next 24 hrs." [alert admin]

CheckUp 1.0 (Mac OS X)

it works

I tried the trial version. It connected after I restarted the application. It works. It looks pretty. It presents data in a readable format. It does the same tasks as Onyx, Maintenance, Yasu, Leopard Cache Cleaner, MacJanitor and most other system utilities. It monitors processes the same as iStat Nano, Temperature Monitor and Hardware Monitor. It has some of the functions of Drive Genius. If it does more than the utilities I currently use, I am not aware of it and probably do not use the function. It crashed when I tried to cancel a lookup of hidden files but it connected again after restarting the application twice. I have no idea what the maintenance scripts repaired but they were fast. It's a tidy all-in-one package. It's intuitive and friendly to use. It's like System Utilities for Dummies. Was I supposed to read a manual? MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, Os X Leopard 10.5.1, 2GB RAM [alert admin]

it works, new interface

I simply installed it and it works. I have no problems like other users. Beats me. It just works. Would you like video evidence if I can figure out how to do it with my digital camera? Previous versions of Limewire were very slow loading with my MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, iMac SE DV, Mac LC 475, Mac Classic .... I have been downloading for a long time from all…

Installs version 9.0.1

Read the onscreen installer notes when you install ver. 9.0.2. It says "Note: Stuffit Expander 9.0.2 differs from Stuffit Expander 9.0.1 only in certain Stuffit Engine components. The Stuffit Expander application will remain at version 9.0.1."
