SizzlingKeys 3.3.4 (Mac OS X)

Unbelievably good.

I used Synergy for a long time, and that was a fine app. SizzlingKeys is even better in terms of design and ease of use, has more features (the ability to search your iTunes library, locate individual tracks, and start playing them without ever leaving the application your working in is sheer genius), and decidedly more unobtrusive. Even if you pay for the pro version, you're still getting an incredible deal. Since the developer invites feature requests, how about this: a hotkey to control the various Equalizer settings. Is that doable? [alert admin]

Eve Online 6.10.85476 (Mac OS X)

Killer learning curve, killer fun.

No one will argue that EvE isn't the toughest, most complicated game out there to learn. If you hate tutorials and reading instructions, manuals and guides, you'll be in hell—and you have to do these things, because although EvE is full of players that just love to answer questions, there are things that even the most patient newbie-mentor can't just explain via the in-game chat.

That said, EvE is also the single MMORPG that gives you the freedom to do almost anything, from building a business empire as a scheming CEO to exploring the (gigantic) galaxy in cloaked Covert Ops ships to living the life as a—YARR!—pirate and outlaw. Unlike other online games, EvE never forces you into a pre-defined role, and you have the choice between playing casually or sinking weeks at a time into the game.

The Mac client has become better of late, although there's no denying that certain stability issues continue to exist and that your mileage will vary greatly depending on your specific system. On the graphics side, Mac gamers can now enjoy premium graphics (more detailed ships and structures, etc), which make enough of a difference to give EvE that nice whole-new-game smell.

Last but not least, while EvE is not freeware (like most MMORPGs, a monthly fee is required to play), the fairly regular expansions to the game are provided free of charge. So, considering that in order to play WoW, you need to shell out about $40 for the client and each expansion plus the monthly subscription fee, EvE is not a bad deal at all.

It takes some time to get into, that's for sure. But EvE is to other MMORPGs what a wilderness trek is to a theme park ride. Harder, less comfortable, but much more rewarding and exciting.

pzizz 2.7 (Mac OS X)

Amazing.

It's not exactly cheap, but pzizz is worth the price. I've tried a few guided meditation/relaxation CDs and audio files, but in the end, the fact that an audio track is the same every time you listen to it makes a huge difference—kind of a relaxation burnout. The beauty of pzizz is that every single napping session it generates is truly different. This magic is effected by a very sophisticated algorithm that assembles various audio elements on the fly, and it does an absolutely superb job: you may recognize the occasional phrase (spoken by a pleasant and soothing male voice that you can optionally disable if you wish) from different naps, but the experience pzizz produces never has a "stitched-together" quality. The differences are subtle, but the benefit is huge; every nap sounds fresh and original. You can set various parameters and save them for specific types of naps (duration, relative volume of voice relative to ambient sound, the time for the "waking up" phase, etc.) for different occasions, but even then no two of the naps generated according to your parameters will be the same (this does not apply, of course, if you chose to export your naps as audio files, which will essentially be nothing but a recording). When I feel washed out in the middle of work, I turn to pzizz for a soothing power nap of 15 minutes and wake up quite refreshed—it's gentler on your heart than a cup of espresso, too! [alert admin]

Mellel 2.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Like a nicely designed car—with no brakes.

I completely agree with mark_de, for a word processor that is, admittedly, as feature rich and stable as Mellel, not to have the Undo buffer survive a save is absolutely ridiculous. On top of it all, the feature has been requested for years by not a few users. It's a shame, I used Mellel for a while and really wanted to like it—but the lack of persistent Undos was and, sadly, continues to be, a deal breaker. [alert admin]

viJournal 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Once more, to be fair.

I gave version 2.0.2 another shot after reading jeremy's reply, and this time, things worked. I'm not sure why the procedures he's referring to didn't function when I first tried 2.0.2, but they do now. I still prefer viJournal 1.9; it's simply a visually more streamlined, cleaner implementation. The new design of the library with its arrows and subheaders is too spread out for me—I like to be able to see all the dates and descriptions at a glance, as is possible with the 'table'-like look of the library in 1.9, and for some reason I also like to have it on the right (perhaps there is a way to switch this around that I haven't discovered yet?). But these are mostly matters of my personal preference; to be fair, viJournal 2.0.2 is perfectly functional, and in terms of design and price still a better choice than its free or more costly competitors. So here's your stars back. [alert admin]

viJournal 2.0 (Mac OS X)

And I might add...

...that I swiftly downgraded to version 1.9 again. [alert admin]

viJournal 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Ambitious look, very poor implementation

The new version looks ambitious, with the spiffy sidebar on the left. Unfortunately its gotten more unintuitive than ever before—lacking an "expand/collapse all" function for the entries (at least I couldn't find one), there's nothing for it, I had to click on each and every single date and entry to expand them. Changing the title of an existing entry proved equally difficult: there's no menu option for it, and frantic (after several fruitless attempts) double-clicking only resulted in a completely cleared (=nameless) entry. The Help files were—ironically—utterly unhelpful in this regard. If this is the new vijournal, it may be time to look for something more user-friendly. [alert admin]

QuickVoice Recorder 2.2.3.237 (Mac OS X)

One more thing...

By the way, QVR seems to have a bit of a problem with Spaces: the app window doesn't always show when switching back from another space. However, in these days, when Apple's in-house Preview app exhibits the same behavior, it seems unfair to blame the QVR devs for this. Also, why is the "Recording Format" drop menu inactive in my QVR prefs? [alert admin]

QuickVoice Recorder 2.2.3.237 (Mac OS X)

I love it.

I'm running QVR on OS X 10.5.4 (Leopard), and so far—knocking on wood—without a hitch. I'm a writer, and it's been some time that I've been waiting for a little app into which I can quickly dictate passages and thoughts that come to mind while I'm at work. You know how it is, this perfectly worded passage pops into your head but by the time you jut it down, some of it is gone. Maybe I'm too slow a typer, but as far as I'm concerned, QVR is just what I needed. And at the promotional price, it's a pretty decent buy. The only thing I wish wasn't there is the tiny delay between pressing the record button and the time that recording actually commences. It's just a second or two, and while it seems like a long time for my percolating brain, it's really no deal breaker. Thumbs up from me. [alert admin]

Bean 1.3.3 (Mac OS X)

Green on black at last!

I was looking for one thing and one thing only—a word processor that would provide a no-fuss full screen option with customizable colors. You wouldn't believe how few programs get this right, and how much they cost. Bean has <b>exactly</b> what I needed (a little respite from a distracting desktop with a glaring b&w page in the middle), and it's free. It does other things, too, oh yes. But as far as I'm concerned, that's just gravy. Good stuff. [alert admin]

"User Cancelled The Extraction????"

Well, I think I figured this out myself... when I first create a target folder via the "Save to..." option in the "File" menu, MtR begins to extract just fine. So, if anyone <b>did</b> experience this problem... this seems to be the solution. Cheers.

Sadly, developer lost interest...

Try uninstalling other existing drivers for your device(s), such as the ones provided by the manufacturer or any thir-party drivers. That did the trick in my case.

Oh, sorry about the multiple post. It's VersionTracker's fault, not mine. Honestly. Well, not altogether, anyway.

Strange choice of name

I guess it should have been named "Memento," if anything, as in "memento mori," loosely translated as "Remember that you must die." Perhaps the developer guessed that 'mori' was the part that meant 'remember?'
