QuarkXPress 8.12 (Mac OS X)
Fair software, bad business practices 
I have just tried the 8.2 version after having stayed with the 3.2 version for years and the current version is quite good in both GUI and features. I was able to import older documents without any problem as well. The only performance issues I experienced were with the way Xpress caches memory for images and other purposes. One really needs more than the recommended 1 Gig of installation space on their boot drive. There were other issues such as requiring one to install to the boot drive ONLY which is a strange imposition upon the user. So far I have found none of the horrible bugs that have haunted versions 4-7, thus Quark seems to finally be making headway in perfecting the glacially slow move to OSX. That is why I have used 3.2 up to now. The real issue for users of today's Xpress IMHO, is the preditory pricing policy of Quark. Users in different countries pay different amounts for Xpress though it is the same software. This means that someone in Australia or Europe is forced to spend a good bit more money for the same software and this is poor judgement on the part of Quark. I note that Sibelius has tried the same model for their software and it and poor programming for OSX has driven away more than a few users. As noted by one other reviewer below, why pay so much for Xpress when for a little more one can update their complete Adobe suite!? [alert admin]

Notational Velocity 2.0 b1 (Mac OS X)
This is a very simple application whose function is so effective as to make it very useful for keeping notes. Though graphics are not embedded, it allows one to make notes and to search for them so easily and quickly that it is really impressive. Allowing for one to export notes in UTF-8 is a great idea for those that use two-byte fonts. Any improvements, at this point, would be adding luster to the original concept. I would only caution the author to consider carefully any additional "improvements" since very few applications can be the sum of all things. [alert admin]

Mac Amazon Browser 1.5.3 (Mac OS X)
The application seems better since my last review, however there are some problems: - The application always shows "new releases" upon start up, even if disabled. - I notice the browser which acknowledges my Amazon ID but it is not clear if there is any security in Mac Amazon Browser; I see no sign of having a secure connection, thus I quit the application because I did not want to complete a purchase from within the application! Vuze 4.2.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Apple Safari 4.0.2 (Mac OS X)
While this version works well enough for viewing sites, Safari still gets sluggish when going to view the bookmarks list. It would be good to have the option of disabling the little site previews since they do seem to slow down getting to the bookmarks. There is also absolutely no flexibility for viewing HTML of selected parts of the page, as in Firefox, thus viewing the source code for the entire page is tedious. Safari cries out for third-party hacks just to offer the user more options than what Apple has coded. I'm also finding that, as of the current build of Firefox 3.5, Safari loads the same pages slower than Firefox too (10.4.11 PPC) which is odd since I have add-ons in Firefox. [alert admin]

Upon start up, I get: date: illegal option -- j usage: date [-nu] [-r seconds] [+format] date [[[[[cc]yy]mm]dd]hh]mm[.ss] (1) Upon attempting to add files to a non-existent list of files to convert, I get: NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError: 4 (1) In short, based upon what I get, this is not ready for release; it simply does not work. Keep trying though. [alert admin]

My PopMail, unlike Mail, will let the user preview an e-mail and usually loads the mail que faster than Mail. I find this application to be faster and easier to filter with than Mail, unless one is using Purify with Mail and Applescripts.

I find Safari is slower on javascripted sites than firefox and does not allow me to quickly look at code. It is slower to start up though than Safari. I suspect strongly you have issues with your machine that are affecting the performance of Firefox.

The activity window does not allow one to selectively view source HTML code. You are incorrect there. While suggesting closing the part of the bookmarks window is not a bad idea, you can hardly make that accusation that one does not know how to use the software. Save your vitrol for your mom.

Also, setting tab stops is a pain! There should be an easier way to set tabs and I also note that if I have numbered lines and I try to insert tab space in a line, the number is replaced with a "dash" and the line indents over five spaces. ???
