NeoOffice 2.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Neooffice is now compatible with Leopard--before it is released! And compatible with Microsoft Office 2007 files, long before Microsoft releases a product on the Mac that can do that. And all for free and open source. I cannot understand why someone would not donate or why someone would complain about being asked to donate. Five stars for an amazing product and an amazing freeware effort. [alert admin]

Quiz Press 1.7.4 (Mac OS X)
Standalone Quizmakers are Dead ![]()

Quizzes are only one part of a learning website. Complete learning management systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Dekeos, Blackboard, etc. provide a full range of learning activities and learner management records. They need a good, fast quiz making tool to add lots of quizzes without a complicated procedure. Quiz Press could provide this but unfortunately does not provide integration. Until it does, it will fill a vanishing niche. [alert admin]

Do you need to keep jpg files under a certain limit for forum postings? The variable file size trimer is so easy. Just another reason why this tool is indispensible for me. [alert admin]

Transcriva 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)
Audio Playback Speed Does Not Work Well ![]()

Nice interface and after initial confusion of about 5 minutes I could make a transcription. I would rate this higher if the following issues worked better. 1. Playback is virtually unintelligible at even the first setting slower or faster. This problem has been solved in other software packages, and it would really help here. 2. Key shortcuts must be double keys, very clumbersome. I would like to make the play/pause button to be the left control key--so easy then. 3. Adding "entries" was odd. I could not add an entry after the current entry, it always jumped up to add one. I could not drap and drop entries. They were fixed in one position even when empty of text. 4. The nag system is very irritating. Every 20 minutes, the program comes to a halt, you save and restart the program. I hope the suthors consider these issues. I am using Mac OS 10.4.7 on a 1.2ghz Powerbook G4, with 512mb memory, so I assume these issues are not related to my hardware. Good luck. :-) [alert admin]

Moodle 1.6 (Mac OS X)
I have used Moodle for four years now, and have tested version 1.6 in my classes enough to say that it is stable and ready for production sites. Bug-testing is thorough and fixing is fast. What I like best about this open source program is the user community. It supports innovation and contributions from teachers and developers all over the world. It has been adopted by the largest university in the world (Open Univ. UK--over 150,000 students) and yet is easy enough for a single teacher to set up with a couple clicks on a hosting service using Fantastico. I am now working with six other universities to make new modules--Project Module, Feedback Module, Mobile Phone Modules and other contributions. Imagine the next version, 1.7, which will begin repositories for teachers to share materials. [alert admin]

Yummy FTP 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
Lots of features, but my number one need is remote unzip. Downloaded Yummy, searched the menus, feature list, and help but appears this is not provided. Transmit and Fetch also have no unzip. Only RBrowser appears to feature it, but I like Yummy's interface much better. Will upgrade my rating when unzip is offered. [alert admin]

MAMP 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Thank you for updating the MySQL version. Now MAMP has the unicode bugs removed. The eAccelerator is also a wonderful feature. [alert admin]

Monolingual 1.3.0 (Mac OS X)
Reminds me of the joke... - what is a person who knows three languages? A tri-lingual. - what is a person who knows two languages? A bi-lingual. - what is a person who knows one language? American. And yes, I am a monolingual American who ironically teaches foreign languages for a living. :) [alert admin]

MAMP 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)
The Best AMP Distro for the Mac ![]()

This is the easiest distro for making an AMP server with a Mac. I have used Marc Liyanege's packages (thanks, Marc, for being the first) but they require considerable technical expertise. I liked the Server Logistics packages because they were easier and had a PHP accelerator built in. But those packages have not been upgraded in a while and require separate piece-by-piece installation. MAMP does all the pieces in one operation and the accelerator is built in. Now my only wish is that Apple build a Darwin kernel that allows MySQL to directly address the kernel like Linex does. Then we will have a truly fast server, comparable to anything else in the world. I installed this and tried producing reports using the sample files. It all worked and I could figure it out in less than an hour. I am not an experienced qualitative researcher and have not used this software for more than an hour, but it looks real good. I also appreciate that the developer provides updates over the past few years. [alert admin]

The warning about "3 plays only" is wrong. Tube TV is completely free. I recommend deleting the original comment and these replies.
