Apple Aperture 1.1 (Mac OS X)
RAW Conversions Vastly Improved ![]()

The 1.1 update vastly improves conversion of Canon EOS-1Ds RAW-files, but Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) is still far superior. Aperture 1.1 deals much better with chroma noise (=high ISO images) than previous versions did and seems to employ a much improved de-mosaicing algorithm. But chroma noise is still strong compared to ACR, and Aperture still produces nasty halos and other artefacts in areas of stark contrast. Also, the default rendering of Aperture's RAW-converter is still far more contrasty and saturated than what I'd consider neutral - more of a Kodacolor rendering, which is not suitable for a professional imaging application, IMO. Usability is great as before, but if image quality is sub-par, I prefer more complicated workflows that result in higher quality images. Two stars for now - 1.0.x was unusable for me, so this rating is a clear improvement. Keep trying, Apple! A few more updates like this one, and you've got it right - and you'll get more stars to boot ;) [alert admin]

VueScan 8.0.12 (Mac OS X)
@Asta the Dog: I had a conversation with the developer about support for the LIDE 50 about a year ago. The problem is the different main chip used in this model compared to the LIDE20, 30, etc. (due to the fact that the LIDE50 is USB2, IIRC), and the fact that Canon is unwilling to make the associated command set public. Reverse-engineering appears to be too difficult. HTH. [alert admin]

HP OfficeJet D series 6.3.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
HP Chat Support - Fun Stuff :-/
I own a OJ d155xi, and - needless to say - I've had my misgivings about the OS X drivers. Otherwise quite a good device. As others have noted, the URL for the 6.3.4 update is dead. So I figured I'd let them know, using their Chat Support. Here goes the transcript: Chat Transcript Begins Here -------------------------------------------------------------- HP Rep: Welcome to HP Total Care. How may I assist you today? Me: Hello! GPSNavX 1.56 (Mac OS X)
It is nice to see that the list of compatible chart formats is growing longer. However, I'll hold off using this product until it can read Tiff-World files et al. and is capable of calibrating scanned maps by hand... Also, MrSID/SID-World compatibility would be awesome! But I'm happy to see so much active development of this product. Once it fits my bill, I'll buy! [alert admin]

Keyspan Presentation Remote 1.6 (Mac OS X)
Incorrect Link, Corrupted Installer
The title says it all - the URL is incorrect (but it's quite easy to figure out what it should be) and the installer won't run under Panther (haven't tried Jaguar). This is the error I get when I try to install: "The preinstall script was either not executable or not readable." Try again, Keyspan! The hardware is awesome – but that won't give any stars here... IPNetShareX Pro 1.0c2 (Mac OS X)
two purposes for me that Apple's built-in Internet Sharing in Jaguar does not: 1.) there's an option to enable it on startup, and 2.) there's no DHCP-server running, which I like for security reasons. So far, it's stable up to Jaguar 10.2.4 [alert admin]

say shame on EPSON, because they are the ones that funded the development of this version of gimp print (as can be seen in the documentation). That said, I must say that gimp print rocks. [alert admin]

Thanks for paraphrasing my previous post - do you actually own a EOS-1Ds or are you just bumping ratings as a hobby?
