LiteIcon 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Very nice

This works as advertised, is beautifully executed, and is free to boot. No drawbacks as far as I can tell. Cheers to the developer! I have no clue as to why there are not more glowing reviews for this great and very useful piece of software; it definitely serves a niche. [alert admin]

No reviews?

Over 800 downloads and not a single review? That makes me nervous! [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2007-004 (Mac OS X)

Ugh!

The update appeared to install normally, but after a restart (a single restart in my case) my mouse speed reverted to a very slow setting and none of my login items (iCal, Butler) launch automatically. Rats! I did the usual before and after repairing of permissions, quit all running apps, installed the update a second time, nada. Guess it was my time to get bitten; could always have been worse, I suppose. [alert admin]

Tabula Rasa 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Chalky

This is a lot of fun; thank you. I was about to suggest this feature, but just noticed it's there already: If you option-drag the eraser you can move it across the drawing without erasing your work. [alert admin]

Fenetres Volantes 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Candy all over

This is a real beauty; I'm amazed no one has thought to make something like this before, but here it is. Runs fine on my old G4, too. Right now the VT download link is pointing to the wrong file (0.2.3); that might explain the difficulty in the review below. Get the proper 1.0 version from here: http://www.objective-cocoa.org/fenetresvolantes/en/download.html [alert admin]

SWF Movie Player 2.0.13.1896 (Mac OS X)

Free QuickTime Alternative

"Notary Sojac: This is purely a Demo of a commercial product. What we need is a free and decent swf/flv plugin for QuickTime." Perian does FLV and more; very smooth. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30931 [alert admin]

Perian 0.5 (Mac OS X)

Outstanding

Works like magic; thank you! Pretty much all of the assorted video clips I have saved can now play beautifully in QuickTime, instead of having to fire VLC for AVIs or the buggy, skippy, out-of-sync FLV Viewer (just thinking about it makes me cringe) to view FLVs from YouTube. [alert admin]

SafariStand 2.0b14 (Mac OS X)

Fancy

There are tons of features here, and I've only scratched the surface. The Actions button alone is remarkable. I especially love the thumbnail tabs at the left. Is there a way to disable the normal Safari tab bar? That would be a nice addition; could use just the thumbnails to navigate the tabs, and free up a tiny bit of screen space in the bargain. Desktop Tiles 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Nice work

Almost encourages me to not use the computer a while just to see how scrambled the tiles become. [alert admin]

TransparentDock 2.3.6 (Mac OS X)

misty

I'm almost at the point where I'm going to hold off on OS X updates until TransparentDock is ready for it. I can live with PithHelmet being broken (seems to work with 10.4.5) because I can use Firefox in the interim, but man, there's just no getting around that nasty gray dock. [alert admin]

No reviews?

"Why would this make you nervous? I honestly don't understand that." This changes system icons. Let's say it has a flaw that winds up hosing one's computer; that might prevent people from posting a review, would it not? That was my line of thinking. It sounds like a nice freeware replacement for Candy Bar. If it works as advertised, I'd think people would post reviews; people who use this site are pretty good about following up with…

Yes, thanks for the icons. The current ones are flat-out awful.

Ugh! Gag! Gack! I need Pithhelmet again!

All true. Safari got so bad before I did the plist edit (which seems to work fine for now) that I gave up and switched over to Firefox using the mighty Adblock extension.

Read the readme?

Read the readme? Madness! ;) That is helpful, thanks. I still think a "restore" would be an easy, neat way to recover the colors etc if desired.

Dual 2.0 G5 OS X 10.4.2 install issues

Just one of those things; it's good for security purposes. And you'll know when you're booting in Safe Mode because it'll say so; you can't miss it on the login screen.

Dual 2.0 G5 OS X 10.4.2 install issues

I had the same issue; turns out you can't boot into safe mode while you have an Open Firmware password enabled. (The Shift is ignored and it boots as usual.) Go to Apps/Utilities/Open Firmware Password and switch it off. Then, when you next shift-reboot, the login screen will display "Safe Mode" in red. On my older Mac I had to hold the Shift key for a good while; thought something was wrong, but no.

Bugs And Crashes

Here's the "unexpected quit" that's announced immediately following a proper command-Q quit. I don't care to have my e-mail address listed publicly at bugzilla; I get enough spam as it is.
