Perian 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

I must be doing something wrong...

...because v 1.1.1 will not install on my G5 dual running OSX 10.5.5 (Because "an error occurred".) Perhaps I have something incompatible but what? [alert admin]

MouseZoom 2.2 (Mac OS X)

Wonder what's wrong

Despite repeated attempts, I cannot get it to install on my G5 Dual running OSX 10.5.5. I'm disappointed because I loved it when I was last able to use it (forget my config then) because of the huge screen real estate I have. [alert admin]

OnyX 1.9.8 (Mac OS X)

Suspicious!

I could never trust a tool that puts up a dialog box "where is <application> when the requested app is staring us in the face in the very same dialog box, below the question. Even more so when all of my apps are on a separate partition so it wants to query me about all of them. I have 121 GB of apps! I am not going to waste several hours telling this dumb utility where each and every one of my apps is, when it already knows, else why would it list them in a dialog box? Also, it seems very suspicious to me that several posters reported that version 1.9.7 is fatally-flawed yet one guy praises it to the heavens. Could he be the author in disguise? Tools that claim to do work in the bowels of the system should run perfectly or should be deleted immediately. Delete. [alert admin]

SheerVideo Pro 2.6.7.6 (Mac OS X)

I make no apology for being pedantic.

It is hard to have confidence in a developer who says "Compared to uncompressed formats, Sheer will double your disk speed, double your disk size, double your transmission bandwidth" when it is so easy to be accurate with the language. Apart from the "compared to" solecism, none of these 3 claims is true. Hyperbole in advertising, perhaps, but this is a technical forum. [alert admin]

PGP Desktop 9.9 (Mac OS X)

Not quite there yet?

"If you're an existing PGP Desktop customer, you can launch PGP Desktop, navigate to the PGP menu, and select "Check For Updates" to determine if you're eligible for a free upgrade to version 9.9" NO! I have 9.83 running on an Intel driven by OSX 10.54 and PGP/Check for Updates is unaware of any update even though I would be entitled to it. (I'm fully paid-up and registered.) For me, PGP is an essential tool. But PGP Corp is a terrible entity to deal with and their web site is appalling. I just spent an hour running all over it looking for any reference to an update or even any use of the word "Macintosh". And just try to contact them. It will ruin your day! I think the VT mention of an update is either premature or fully-specious. Even the app itself presents some difficulties these days to all but seasoned users. It wasn't always like that. I use it daily but I grump at it often. Zimmerman, you knew not what you were doing when you put your baby out for adoption. It's been buggered about so much by greedy, lazy and stupid marketing types you would not recognize it these days. [alert admin]

par2formac 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Seems ok

MacPAR Deluxe seems to have stopped working since OSX 10.5.4. I searched VT and found this. Note the download link is broken so you must go to the developer's site. PAR2ForMac sprang into life when I asked it and it wasted no time giving a satisfactory result. Its interface is not as good as MacPAR Deluxe but at least it works! [alert admin]

Cocktail 4.1.3 (Mac OS X)

Wanted to like it but...

It doesn't get beyond first base for me. On an Intel MacBook Pro driven by OSX 10.54, I have currently mounted some PGP Disks and a USB Thumb Drive as well as the internal hard disk itself of course. *censored*tail can see only the internal HD. This is a serious defect that renders the tool useless. [alert admin]

iPodRip 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Caution — moron at work

This seems like a jim-dandy tool, exactly what I want. Trouble is, I can't buy a copy! The developer's web site tells me that my credit card number and CCV number do not match. Yet I DID NOT make an error. Try to send him an email. Oops — he hasn't seen fit to include an email address or any other way to contact him, on the site. There goes another sale! [alert admin]

Smileys 1.1 (Mac OS X)

What did I do wrong?

"The Smileys Screensaver could not be installed because an error occurred" Intel Core 2 Duo, OSX 10.5.4 Oh well...back to reality. [alert admin]

Microsoft Expression Media 2.0.1477.0 (Mac OS X)

Useless!

I gave it an honest trial. Now I'm trashing it. I agree with all that previous reviewers say and to those criticisms I add this: On whim, the app will just toss your preferences away. You launch it and...now you must re-set it all over again. Stand-alone PDF manual? Forget it ! And the price? Wow! I'll bet some software engineer somewhere could wring the same simple tool for $50. And he'd get very rich. [alert admin]

Grrr worse than Apple!

Pejorative retorts do nothing for the quality of any debate. Metaphorically-speaking, in this context, "fascism" equates to an application saying to me "to hell with you and your preferences. I'm going to install myself where _I_ want and you must just put up with it." Where is the essential difference between that and the extreme right-wing politics that launched the word? To update another respondent's remarks, I have several hard drives in my machine, one dedicated…

"most unique"

It's a funny thing. I'm a language pedant too and I was not unhappy to see your post. Then I studied what they'd written and it made me pause. Could be they have uncovered the first legitimate usage of "most unique" that I've ever seen. Imagine a person does, says or invents something unique. Imagine it's only a small step for someone else to emulate it or do something so similar that you can no longer…
