ProPresenter 3.3.2 (Mac OS X)

What's it worth?

When you consider cost, there's more than mere dollars to calculate. In 2001 when I arrived at my present church we used PowerPoint. When Keynote was released we starting using that instead. Better than PowerPoint, but still COMPLETELY inflexible while a worship set is running. We started using ProPresenter last year, and haven't looked back. While one song is moving forward my tech guy can be editing or adding lyrics. We still use Keynote for missions presentations and for my sermons; he can get those prepped and ready while the worship set is taking place. The countdown alone has to be worth something. And it plays very nicely with DVD Player and Keynote. In my mind, the key to a church is the massive amount of volunteer labor that goes into things. This is far more the case in a small church. Keeping your volunteers motivated and productive keeps them excited and committed to serving. ProPresenter is a fantastic tool for the tech guys (and gals). [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.5.2 (Mac OS X)

First time for everything

I can finally join the hordes of those who think that a Mac OS is butt-ugly. I use my MacBook daily, for hours a day, and I KNOW what it looks like, and this update changed things for the much worse. It seems as though the video gain was cranked way up, and colors are over-saturated. Font smoothing is also affected. At 12 point the edges of text have a faint multi-color aura. This is absent at larger sizes, but even massive text is no longer truly smooth. The transparent/translucent menus are solid white. There is not the slightest hint of transparency. Since Apple didn't say that they were removing menu transparency, it's probably all related. I tried resetting p-ram, to no effect. I have no doubt Steve will get it all worked out in the end. In the meantime, count the cost of the update. [alert admin]

Apple Mac OS X 10.5.2 (Mac OS X)

OK, Feel Much Better Now . . .

Earlier I posted a rant about the changes in video on my MacBook. I figured it out. Somehow, in the process of the update, the Enhance Contrast setting in the Universal Access preference pane was cranked up to about 50% of maximum. Normal is essentially 0% of maximum, so it made quite a difference. It's not a pref pane that I use at all, so I'm basically clueless (ahem) as to what happened. If you want to see what I saw on your laptop, try changing the setting. It was pretty frustrating there for a bit. I'm certainly glad that I didn't waste time doing a system reinstall. It's nice to be in love again. I'll send Steve flowers in the morning and make it up to him, I promise. [alert admin]

Apple Disk Transfer ProDOS 1.0.5 (Mac OS X)

Ya gotta love it

If the Apple II could inspire such devotion that decades later people still need to get data off of 'em, then all I can say is hoorah! That's a product with legs (whatever that means). [alert admin]

NovaMind 3.2.12 (Mac OS X)

Not "MindMapper" . . .

MindMapper is a Windows only program. This gentlemen either means "MindMap" or is a secret Microsoft promoter. Whether or not MindMap is a better program than NovaMind each user must decide. I've tried the several mind mapping programs available for the Mac, and NovaMind, to this point, is my own preference. Try them and decide for yourself. [alert admin]

Harmony Assistant 9.2.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

MacIntel Upgrade Fee

Harmony Assistant and Melody Assistant are both fantastic programs. I've used them for years, and purchased Melody Assistant licences for a number of cash-flow limited friends. A couple of years ago I even purchased Harmony Assistant again, because of the immense value of the program. The "old" version of Harmony Assistant will run fine on a MacIntel machine using Rosetta, so if you are genuinely so strapped for cash, or just a whiny tightwad who doesn't want to part with $15, you can continue to use the program. If it were me I'd be charging at least 50% of full price, not 20%. As it is, I'm not sure how the bro's manage to make all this pay. Low cost, high volume, perhaps? In any case, I'd purchase a full license gladly, and $15 is NOTHING, a couple of latte's on the way to work. [alert admin]

SOHO Organizer 5.6.0 (Mac OS X)

Interesting idea

to use iCal's information to create calendar views. It makes up for some of iCal's shortcomings. However, the "coming soon" banners on the Week and Month view pages raises the question of "when?" Virtually all of my scheduling takes place using the Week view. While I don't mind Organizer using iCal data, I don't quite see the point in having to switch to iCal to look at a week or month at a time. Chronos has released a number of updates in recent months, so perhaps Week and Month views are just around the corner. I'll leave a rating until then. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2004 11.2.6 (Mac OS X)

A moment of clarity

Back in May I moved up to a MacBook Pro (15", 2.16GB), and installed my typical regiment of software, including Microsoft Office. I also grabbed a demo of Nisus Writer Express, which was available as a Universal Binary. I have to admit that I really didn't like Nisus for a few weeks, since I've used Word for many, many years. But then Nisus clicked with me, and I purchased it. I've gradually moved all my work over to Nisus, but kept Office on my machine. But this latest security patch is not going to get installed on my MBP. Office 2004 has been on the market for quite a while, and Microsoft is STILL releasing security updates. Anyone who believes that THIS one is the LAST one that will be needed has a wonderful disregard for history, and probably ignores helmet laws. So good night, and good luck, Microsoft Office. There's the door; don't let the doorknob hitcha where the good Lord splitcha. [alert admin]

Apple Aperture 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

I tried, but

I really, really like Apple products. I'm not exactly in love with Apple stuff, but we're very good friends. That's why I brought home a 2.16g MacBook Pro a few weeks ago. And that's also why I'm deeply disappointed in Aperture. It holds out a lot of promise, but on my MacBook - which is a FAST machine, with 256 megs of video RAM - Aperture is SLOW. Importing, for instance, is painfully slow. While Aperture was struggling to import the thousands of images I have on DVD, iPhoto, of all things, was zipping through like a hot knife through tofu. That's ok; I figured that I would only import that many images one time. It's using the program that matters. Well, even in regular use Aperture just can't keep up with iPhoto. Now, iPhoto can't do many of the things that Aperture can do, of course. But I'm not asking A. to do them all the time. I can't imagine what Aperture would have been like on my old TiBook! I'm hoping that Apple will get its act together, and figure out how to keep the power in Aperture without it being glacial. [alert admin]

Are you kidding me?!

How about "shame on Microsoft for needing regular security updates in an office suite"? It's not an OS; it's not server software. I can even understand browser updates, but word processing?!?!?
