EndNote X1 (Mac OS X)

Major improvements in the design of interactive routiines

I have used EndNote for the Mac for well over ten years. The functionality is such that I needed to use it regardless of how bad the interface was. Beginning with X the functionality improved. In X1 the functionality has continued to improve but, amazingly, so has the interface. I have been using it for two days and am still finding new things to like. This is the first time I have been really happy about an EndNote upgrade in about 5 years. I do not have the time, nor is this the place, to write a complete review. But if you used EndNote in the past despite itself, you can rest assure that someone at ISI has finally taken the design of interactivity as serious as the functionality. I really like this version. I am not rating the Support/Documentation as I have not used that part of the system and probably will not. I am not sure that I should have paid $100 to upgrade since I just did that last year. But, that $100 was more worthwhile than the upgrade to v8 or vX. Hope this helps someone. [alert admin]

EndNote X (Mac OS X)

Okay but not worth paying for an upgrade

As a loyal EndNote user since it was owned by Niles I have seen many improvements in this product and survived their near disasterous port to OS X. EndNote 9 works just fine and is very stable. I have used X now for about a week. It provides minor improvements to the interface. Most notable is the ability to drag and drop pdfs onto a record. This means that all of your records will be directly and easily linked to your pdfs. However, this feature is incomplete. A. Although you can see an icon of the pdf when you open your record, you cannot drag and drop it anyplace -- you can only open it. This means that to send it to a friend via email that you must open the pdf or find the endnote pdf directory via the Finder. B. When you drop a pdf onto a record, EN creates a new version of that pdf. I have about 500 pdfs organized in a library file on my desktop by first author. When I linked pdfs to EN records the old way, their storage directory was organized and accessible. For the new way EN creates a fairly flat file structure -- it is organized alphabetically by first author, but that is about it. C. It seems to be the case that for old records with hyperlinks to pdfs stored in my library that I get a pdf icon that connects to the pdf in my old directory. However, once I have more "new" versions of links (where the pdfs are duplicated and put into their own EN directory) it will be very hard to know where to go to drag and drop a stored PDF. (All icons have the same label.) I have a large harddrive but it seem pointless haviing multiple copies of the same file especially when 99% of these files are ones I have downloaded from online versions of journals. Recommendation. I will go thru the transition with EN X and will pay my $99 for this minor upgrade. I will not buy multiple copies for my lab and grad students as I have with prior versions as these new features simply are not worth the price of a new release. So I recommend EndNote 9 very highly. I recommned EndNote X if you have never used EN. But I do not recommend switching from EN 9 to EN X unless you have $99 burning a hole in your pocket. [alert admin]

SleepLess 1.6 (Mac OS X)

Works for me!

I am surprised to see the rash of negative reviews. I have been using Sleepless for well over a year. I use it whenever I back up my HD (twice a week) and whenever I do presentations from my laptop (about 2-4 times per week). I have no problems with this at all. I have not used the "lid close" mode as I have little (or no) use for it. Everything I do use works very well. [alert admin]

SleepLess 1.4 (Mac OS X)

Cruising with the top down!

I am a great fan of Sleepless. (Though I am curious as to why versiontracker has this listed in their MacOS Classic side.) Right now I have the new version of sleepless on and my laptop lid is down. (I have a Studio Monitor attached to the laptop.) This works just fine. Is just what I need for presentations where the lid gets in the way. Sleepless is great for quickly changiing settings so that the Mac does not go to sleep during backup or when I am running simulations. [alert admin]

Eudora 6.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Pay again???!!

Why am I paying to upgrade from 6.0 to 6.0.1??? I have been using Eudora since 1993. They still do not have their address book integrated with Apple's! What a pay. I suppose I will put off upgrading as long as I can. (Still on 10.2.8). [alert admin]

Cocktail 2.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Yes Documentation

I dont know what CipherWare is thinking, Cocktail has excellent explanations for all of these functions it performs. Simply check HELP on the menubar. Indeed, it is nice to get some of these issues explained. [alert admin]

PsyncX 2.0b1 (Mac OS X)

PsyncX

I have been using PsycncX for about 2-3 weeks now. Other members of my lab have been using it for several months. At this point no one reports any problems. Prior to PsyncX I had used both Retrospect and SilverKeeper. So far I like PsyncX at least as well as those two. Most positive feature is that it actually creates a bootable disk. Second most positive feature is that it makes a copy of your files -- without compressing them. So you can look at them, open them, run them, and generally have confidence that the backup really did back up. Most negative feature is that after you type in your password the thing goes away and begins work without any feedback to the user. You have to trust that the software is actually doing something. Second most negative feature is that there is no way to interpret the numerous messages that PsyncX generates. Most of them are clearly path names that describe the original directory path and the backup directory path. But there are other messages whose interpretation is less obvious. So -- best piece of free or commercial backup software we have used -- and over the years we have used many. Ease of use rating is 4 stars due to lack of feedback while backing up. There is no documentation or support (that I ahve found). But not much is needed. Features -- not sure what features (other than more interpretable feedback) would be desired. Quality/Stability is excellent. Price is right! [alert admin]

I doubt this guy knows what he is talking about

I cut and paste formatted citations into email all of the time. 1. Select citation(s) in the endnote window 2. keyboard: Apple-K 3. Select space in email 4. keyboard: command-V (paste) Voila!! Simon, H. A. (1956). Rational choice and the structure of the environment. Psychological Review, 63, 129–138. This is such a basic function of EndNotes (I have used this function ever since 1993 or something like that) that I really wonder about the reviewer's knowledge and use of EndNotes.…
