MenuStrip 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Also lover of the old Purple Button..

I upgraded then downgraded so I could get my dimpled purple button back. When dimpled, auto-hide was on, un-dimpled auto-hide was turned off. It was the only feature I used and was shocked to see it go. Now, none of the buttons can be troggle buttons. Am I wrong? I hope so. I'd like to hear how others might have figured out a way to configure the new version to create this same action on one button (of any color). [alert admin]

SideTrack 0.9 (Mac OS X)

Indispensable !!

I almost went into a panic when the previous beta expired and it stopped working. Apple should buy the code and include it in Tiger! [alert admin]

Camino 0.8 (Mac OS X)

Disappearing mini site icons

Does anyone have a fix for Camino's problem with forgetting the mini web site icons that appear next to the URL in a bookmark list? I imported my bookmarks from Safari, if that makes any difference. I didn't expect the mini icons to come along, but if would have been nice. Anyway, at first I thought they would repopulate as I visited sites anew. But they only last a while and then one or two restarts later and they are gone, and the generic icon takes it place. But some seem to stick around longer than others. I tried deleting the old and replacing with newly saved bookmarks, but they still get forgotton. [alert admin]

Camino 0.8 (Mac OS X)

Wow! This new version is FAST! Faster than Safari!

I always check out the latest versions of the various browsers, to see if any of them can pull me away from Safari. While I've enjoyed the bells and whistles other browsers boast -- and Safari lacks -- I always come back to Safari primarily because of its superior speed in loading pages, but also in startup and displaying my long lists of bookmarks (in bookmarks folders in the bookmarks bar). I have a 5,000K cable connection (vs the standard 1,500K), so I can really see the difference in browser speed. Importing my bookmarks to another browser from Safari just for testing was always a hassle. But more importantly, the prospect of moving them all back to Safari after a period of testing seemed daunting. And if I didn't, any changes to my bookmarks would get lost. Camino is now the only browser I know of that addressed this issue head on. Through a menu choice, you can import from Safari AND export to Safari. So now, as I test out Camino, I don’t have to worry about loosing changes to my bookmarks if I decide to go back to Safari. Besides being faster, Camino has far better cookie management than Safari. Camino also has built-in the send URL to email function. Currently, I need to use an external apple script for Safari to do this. Other than that, they appear remarkablely similar. The only fly in the ointment is Camino still takes too long to load my big list of bookmarks. Safari used to have this problem, but it was remedied a few versions ago. What is particularly frustrating is that Camino appears to be done loading, but when I click on one of the bookmark folders in the Bookmark bar, I get the beach ball for what seems like an eternity. Also, Camino doesn’t seem to do a constant job with obtaining and maintaining the mini site icons that appear next to the bookmark name. These issues will likely be reason enough for me to go back to Safari. So, PLEASE, Camino Programmers, do what you can to better optimize the startup process for those of us with large bookmark lists, and fix how it handles those mini-icons. [alert admin]

Look Busy 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Wrong Again!

It may look like there is a BusyBee available for download. But click on the Versiontracker link to download BusyBee and you get this: "Not Found The requested URL /tchest/busybee/ was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request." I'll notify the versiontracker webmaster to see if they can fix it. [alert admin]

BroadbandOptimizer 1.5 (Mac OS X)

No good anymore

I've used this startup item ever since it was introduced. But then I upgraded from Starpower's 3 megabit cable modem internet to its 5 mebabit service. I found my connection on my iBook G4 933mhz not realizing the speed gain (as tested at various sites, i.e, Toast.net, PCPitStop, BandwidthPlace, Computers4sure, DSLReports, etc.). No test site tested faster than 3.2 mbit, often much lower (down to 2.3 mbit). However, I found that other Macs on my intranet, which did NOT have this so-called "Broadband Optimizer" installed, actually tested much FASTER. Now that I've remove it from my iBook G4, it's blazing like the others, clocking 4.8 to 6.9 mbits (depending on the test site). Can anybody explain? [alert admin]

Apple AirPort 3.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Why isn't this available via Software Update?

Why isn't this available via Software Update? Usually, updates first appear in the automated Software Update system preference panel, then only later appear for download at Apple.com. This update is only available for download. Can anyone explain? [alert admin]

Apple Safari 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Forget that request...

Forget that request for a hack to return the speed measurement to the Download window....I'm move'n to OmniWeb 5, which just posted a great beta update.

It puts Safari to shame, especially as Job touts Apple as some innovation king. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back...

Don't you hate when a software developer unilaterally decides to remove a feature that you have come to depend on? As if they know what is best for everybody.

Well, Apple has removed the speed measurement from Downloads. They have replaced it with an estimate of time. What arrogance!! What stupid, brain-dead, arrogance!!!

I guess it's nice to have the time estimate, but I also want to know how fast my connection is to the site from which I’m downloading. Especially since I have a new 3 mbit cable connection. It fun to see how fast it rips down files.

It is also helpful to see how much the connection slows as more simultaneous downloads are added.

They should have this time estimate as an option and something that can be displayed in addition to the speed measurement.

Does anyone know how to put this back? Someone program a hack, please! [alert admin]
