Bracketeer 3.3 (Mac OS X)

You might want to try an alternative first

Bracketeer works fine, but its core technology is also used in Xfuse which is free. So, You might want to try Xfuse and compare it to Bracketeer. Xfuse can be downloaded from here: http://www.kekus.com/for_reg_users/ [alert admin]

Skype 2.6.0.140 (Mac OS X)

Sticking with version 2006

I use Skype version 2006 with MacBooks and Macbook pros. It works great. I don't think I should upgrade to the latest 'cause it appears to be problematic and I don't want to mess with what works now. [alert admin]

Transmission 0.72 (Mac OS X)

DMG didn't work

Downloaded the .dmg file - doubled clicked on it, there's a short flash as if it's opening then nothing happens. Instead I launched Transmission and it said an update was available which I clicked Yes to. That way worked. [alert admin]

Seattle iPod Restaurant Guide 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Good start but has some quirks

Great idea and very helpful for the traveller, however there are some quirks. For example, Mt Vernon is listed as both Mt Vernon and Mount Vernon however the restaurant listings aren't the same. Mt Vernon has 6 listings. Mount Vernon has one "Tokyo Stop" which is not listed on the Mt Vernon list and has no address. A search for list sorted by "Vegatarian" lists such places as McDonalds and Ivars - hardly the epitome of veggie cuisine. I would have preferred a list of restaurants that cater specifically to the veggie crowd and/or who have veggie meals as a major part of the menu offerings. Not including the Old Town Cafe in Bellingham is a major oversight. When dividing up a city's listing (e.g. Seattle which is split into 7 segments. It might be better to name them "Seattle M-R" rather than "Seattle (Page 4) [alert admin]

Capture Me 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)

Brilliant!

Works great! But why the 60 second limit on video screen capture? I would like to capture streaming webcams (e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/mid//sites/surfing/pages/abercam.shtml) but the 60 second record limit kills that. :-( [alert admin]

MacOSaiX 2.0a7 (Mac OS X)

This rev doesn't seem to work

I've used V1.01, which worked great. This rev doesn't seem to work at all. It goes through the motions but doesn't end up creating a mosaic. The GUI doesn't help. If you can find an older version - try that instead. [alert admin]

JES Video Cleaner 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Great idea, great potential - BUT

I'm not sure if its a GUI, User's Guide, or application problem, however, as far as I can tell the application doesn't do anything. Once you've selected all the options it expects you to enter (not an easy task) the OK button finally appears and you can process/save the file. The area selection method in the logo removal option is very confusing to use. But it doesn't seem to end up altering the logo area you think you've finally selected anyway. App and documentation needs work. (MAC OSX 10.4.8 MacBook Pro 17") [alert admin]

TubeSock 2.0 (Mac OS X)

V2 bug with DailyMotion.com

Version 2 has a problem with dowloading videos from DailyMotion.com. Only videos saved to your "Movies" folder on your home directory will be saved. Try saving to any other location and TubeSock will delete the video after downloading it. Responsive developer says problem will be fixed over weekend - look for a rev posted soon after. AsSceneOnTV 1.003 (Mac OS X)

Works great

Boom! Very straightforward capture of images from DVD - whether from the actual DVD or the DVD ripped to your hard drive. Help file is a bit skimpy but app works great and is fairly easy to understand. A keeper for sure! [alert admin]

Resolution Calculator 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Good basic app - but screening info should be updated

The calculator uses the formula for calculating gray levels that only applies to very simple RIPs - the ones that drive devices like black and white office laser printers. (The formula is: number of gray levels = (output resolution divided by halftone screen ruling) squared.) In almost all RIPs since 1989 this resolution-based gray level limitation has been overcome by the use of "supercell" screening where the gray level is represented by an area of dots rather than a single halftone dot. It would also be nice to add a calculator function for FM/stochastic screening given how popular that type of screening has become - not only for presswork but also inkjet printers. That said, it still a useful tool - especially for converting between metric and imperial screen values. [alert admin]
