Stalker CommuniGate Pro 5.0 (Mac OS X)
Just tell'em you don't need the MAPI connector and you want the ISP version. You'll pay a lot less. For my upgrade, I paid FAR less than what I paid at purchase. [alert admin]

4.2.1 Rev. C Causes Serious Ownerships/Permissions Problems
After installing Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev. C, be sure to run Disk Utility and repair permissions immediately. This installer screws up ownerships and permissions all over the /Library directory, /private/etc/authorization. And if you're running Sophos Anti-Virus, you'll get an error message after rebooting (immediately following the Palm Desktop installation) stating Sophos can't run because of a missing kext file. The only way to fix this is to remove/re-install Sophos.

What shoddy testing and quality control by Palm. They had permissions problems with Rev. B that weren't as bad. They actually made things much worse. [alert admin]

MPP Enterprise Edition 2.164 (Mac OS X)
If you need an anti-virus gateway to pass messages to Sophos, ClamAV or even other scanners, or to run past Spam Assassin, MPP is fantastic. I'm using it with Communigate Pro/Sophos/ClamAV, although it works witih Postfix and other mail servers. Very flexible, very stable. No speed hit, either. Highly recommended. [alert admin]

Sophos Anti-Virus 3.90 (Mac OS X)
Turns out that Sophos has a bunch of version numbers for the different components of their software. As of 3/24/05: Product Version: 4.5.1 Engine Version: 2.28.9 Virus Data Version: 3.92 Hope that clear things up. [alert admin]

Sophos Anti-Virus 3.90 (Mac OS X)
Sophos Anti-Virus is, by far, the best anti-virus product for the Macintosh, and I've used them all. Too bad it isn't sold to end users...they sell only to business/enterprise customers (education, too). They provide definition updates (IDE's) faster than Symantec and NAI (most of the time), and their software can also be used to scan messages for a mail server (with some kind of software passing messages to it). Their support is better than Symantec and NAI, too, IMHO. And unlike Symantec, they don't charge you for definition updates after a year. And unlike NAI's Virex, their software actually works and doesn't cause other problems. [alert admin]

I restored my 3G iPod using this updater, and it sped up the update from iTunes considerably. It used to take about 15 minutes or so to get all my music onto my 40 GB iPod, but after restoring, it took less than five minutes. I'm wondering if this is just me imagining things or if others are seeing this. [alert admin]

ALWAYS use the Combo updater to install the major incremental OS updates. It's much safer. [alert admin]

Anti Spam 1.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
Also take a look at Spam Vaccine 1.3 from Matterform Media <http://www.matterform.com>, a product that does the same thing, and it might be more thorough and compatible (I don't know; I'm stating a possibility). Disclaimer: I have no connection to either product here. [alert admin]

Deep Freeze Mac OS X 1.7 (Mac OS X)
For what it's worth, if Deep Freeze for Mac OS X is anything like their Windows version, then Faronics will have a winner on their hands. I've used the Windows version of their product extensively, and it did everything advertised and did it very well. I'm anxious to see the Mac OS X version, and I'm glad to see Faronics decided to come out with a Mac OS X version of their software. [alert admin]

ircle just works, period. DCC has never been a problem, unless you don't understand that in these days of routers and firewalls, you often have to allow traffic through a particular set of ports to allow DCC to work. Don't blame the developer or the software for not knowing how to configure your network to allow DCC to work.

I'm guessing you just haven't configured it properly. Missing Sync 5 DOES sync with iCal via sync services in Tiger. Even version 4 synched with iCal.

Yes, Stalker does have an annual licensing fee. But so what? There are many enterprise-level solutions that have annual licensing. Even Microsoft does that with their products and they're even more expensive, yet you don't hear much complaining. So what's your point again? If you need an full-featured, enterprise-grade mail server, Communigate Pro is the best there is for OS X. If you don't need all the features, try one of the others.

I don't know if the versions are different for the small business version, but for enterprise, the current version as of March, 2004 is 3.91. April will bring us to 3.92. This goes across all platforms Sophos supports.

All it takes is a phone call to get pricing. They don't have a "one price fits all" structure.

The only thing that is holding Sophos Anti-Virus 3.9x back from "taking the lead" in the anti-virus software category from Symantec and NAI is the fact that they don't sell to end users--only to businesses and enterprise customers. Other than that, their software, feature set and support blows away Symantec Anti-Virus and Virex (which is a piece of crap now).

Just because they don't list prices on their web site means their price policy sucks? Interesting logic, to say the least. Yet another useless comment on Versiontracker...
