FruitMenu 3.7.3 (Mac OS X)

FruitMenu and Snow Leopard

Unlike some, I have found FruitMenu to be a reliable and helpful product. Consequently, for several years now, I have happily used it on three Macs with only minor compatibility problems (and gladly paid the appropriate shareware fees to Unsanity). It is a good product and the price is a bargain. I purchased Snow Leopard the day it became available, but I haven't installed it on a single machine as of yet, because that would be irresponsible since I have many specialized software products that first need to be upgraded. Instead of moving too fast, I'm slowly going through my Apps and upgrading each for SL compatibility while making a list of those updates that aren't yet available. FruitMenu will be ready when it's ready. Hopefully, so will I. Be patient. [alert admin]

xGrab 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Same screen shot problem as below

For what it's worth, I just downloaded and tested xGrab 1.1.1 to evaluate its suitability for a project and like another VersionTracker reviewer, I also only see what appears to be a single-frame screenshot when I launch the resulting movie in QuickTime. It may well be operator error, but one aspect of the xGrab interface does lead to some confusion -- the Finish Recording notification dialog box is a pop under, and so (if you have open windows) you don't really know if a movie recording sessions actually is finished. When two people encounter the same issue in unrelated testing, something may well be amiss, so don't be so quick in impugning the judgement other users. The QuickTime Movie .mov Inspector only shows around 6fps recorded for my tests (6.11fps for the last one), even though I selected 30fps in the xGrab Preferences. Also, the movie Duration is just: 0.00.00.22.58. My 1.2GHz PowerBook G4 may not be able to actually record 30fps, but I would think it should be able to record more than 6fps. FruitMenu 3.4.3 (Mac OS X)

10.4.6 compatibility

This is a great application that I use for just one thing: to add all Apple OS X utilities to the Apple Menu. I've listed some right in the main list, and others in subfolders, with names like Network, OS X, Hard Disk Utiltiies, etc. This allows me to quickly find all OS X tools! However, I recently upgraded to Mac OS X v10.4.6, and had to re-install several third party applications that would not launch or otherwise work properly, including FruitMenu (v3.4.3, which had been working fine under under v10.4.5). Now, every time I turn on FruitMenu and the APE (Application Enhancer), and then later put the computer to sleep, menu items such as Date and Time, Keychain Access, Sound, and Displays, do not reappear when re-awakening the computer. I did an Archive and Install to re-install OS X (10.4.3 from disk and then the 10.4.5 and 10.4.6 updates), but this did not solve the disappearing menulet problem. Since doing this, I have repeated the odd behavior several times now. Activating FruitMenu always makes the menu bar icons disappear upon wake from sleep, and so I have stopped using it until I hear about a fix. Any ideas? -- George Wedding GEOPIX, Inc. [alert admin]

Same screen shot problem as below

...I think I may see an interface problem with this application that is leading to the perception that it only is recording screen shots. I just did another test and realized that when I select "Begin Capture" -- the Save As dialog opens. Unfortunately, it also opens as a pop under. If you have open windows, you never see this and consequently, you don't know the app hasn't started recording...In some of my tests, I realized…

Same screen shot problem as below

...the movie Duration is just: 0.00.00.22.58... I should add: even though I allowed the app to record for 10-15- seconds. By the way, in my tests, the Finder was the active App and I moved windows around on the screen during recording (if those details make a difference)...

10.4.6 compatibility

I have since uninstalled FruitMenu and then reinstalled it. Afterwards, those disappearing Apple menu bar icons (Sound, Bluetooth, Date & Time, Displays) no longer disappeared during sleep or log out! However, with FruitMenu activated, these menu bar icons did disappear after shutting down and restarting the computer! And Unsanity still has not answered my tech support question on this one...
