Timer Utility 3.5.3 (Mac OS X)
Lovely little utility, works as advertised. I'll use and be very satisfied (5 stars) with it as it now is, but making it into a widget would make it, IMO, even handier. [alert admin]

iVideo Converter 2.0.9 (Mac OS X)
It works like a charm, wholly intuitively. I've been trying to make (editable) QT movies out of an old, long-ago copied DVD, which presented me with problematic (for me) ".VOB" files, and have tried a few conversion apps to no avail (OK, maybe the wrong ones, but that was my experience). With this it was a breeze. It seems a bit slow, but then, they're big files, and this doesn't detract from my 5-star rating. And all this for a bargain-basement price. Wow! I didn't comment on "Support/Documentation" because I have had no need for either, so far. That's good. [alert admin]

iPhone syncing, just contacts and iCal, was taking over an hour, and I had no idea why or how to fix it. I just DL'd this suite and ran Sync Tune-up, and my sync time went down to just a few minutes. Great app! Thank you! [alert admin]

LimeWire 5 Beta 5.0.4 (Mac OS X)
After installation, upon trying to open, it tells me it needs Java 1.6.x to open, which it can't find, and asks whether it should try to open with Java 1.5.x. The latter doesn't work, so Limewire never opens. BUT: Java 1.6.0 is installed on my Mac (and I'm running 10.5.6 on a PB G4, which is supposed to work). [alert admin]

TomTom HOME 2.4.0.68 (Mac OS X)
2.4.0.63's out - but strangely!
I DL'd 2.4.0.63 directly from my TTH app the other day. No problem. But the link here, and the version on their site, is 2.3.1.40!? Actually, this is no great surprise. While their hardware is really great (my TT Go 930), their customer service is atrocious. [alert admin]

TranslateIt! Deluxe Widget 2.1.0 (Mac OS X)
1. No docs or instructions. Bad, because the widget's hardly obvious or intuitive. 2. Finally figured out where to get the dicts (see other commentary, below), and how to install them, but not exactly sure if I'd done it right, because there are a few different possibilities. 3. Tried the widget: slow as molasses; gets parts of words first, only then getting the whole thing (e.g. for "tomato", it first gets "to", only then going on to the complete word.) 4. only good point: the translation is finally correct, and seemingly complete, if you've got the patience. This is v. 2.1.0; I'd hate to think what the earlier versions were like. My advice: use your dictionary (book!). It's far faster and less frustrating. Or wait for a later version - much later. BOINC 5.10.7 (Mac OS X)
Never had a problem with BOINC: PB G4, OS 10.4.9; well-maintained, very plain-vanilla (no haxies, everything still in default locations) system. I wonder if with this, as with so many updates, problems don't occur more frequently with systems which are not clean and healthy to begin with. [alert admin]

A fantastic little helper probably just became a little better (I'll take that on faith, beyond the cosmetics, because I'll only know after a few weeks' use), and certainly no worse. Worth every dime. [alert admin]

Shiira 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)
Been using Shiira for several months, and it's the fastest, most functional, and least problematic of all I've tried. Safari, Firefox, and Camino aren't bad at all, but Shiira just seems a little better, and I bet the 2.0 version will be better yet. Two minor problems: 1. Fonts: Occasionally web pages display special characters (copyright and such) incorrectly, showing instead an oriental ideogram. This isn't much of a problem, and is easily corrected via the preference pane, but needs correction. 2. "Help" and similar product support is insufficient. While Shiira is pretty intuitive, this should be improved. [alert admin]

I didn't uninstall, and it works fine. More significant: the need to uninstall is not mentioned in Adobe's own installation instructions on their site, but certainly would be if it were necessary, or even beneficial.

This isn't as good as Freeverse's "Classic Cribbage". That is a solid, straightforward game, solo or networked, no bells or whistles other than a peppy 20's-sounding tune on startup. Lots of fun, no frustrations with the software. Freeverse has apparently discontinued it, but it's still available for download at Macgamefiles <http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=10282>, and it works on 10.6.1.

I don't know this app and have never used it, but it's not true that there's no alternative. There is at least one, which I use often, and it's free. Just highlight the content you want in a PDF, and copy and paste it into Word, Pages, and other apps. It may not retain formatting exactly, and you might have to tinker with line endings, but it has usually done the job I needed well…

This works (apparently pretty well, judging by some of the feedback) only on Intel Macs; only those use Java 1.6. Stupid of the developer to limit it this way, even dumber to not document this condition clearly.

Not a bug. I just read on the Limewire site that this only works on Intel Macs, which use Java 1.6, but not on PPC Macs, which use Java 1.5. But Limewire ought to say this clearly, up front, instead of making us go through the hassle of sorting the problem out.

I just read the docs on Limewire's site: this is Intel-only, since there is (currently) no Java 1.6 for PPC.

Do you really do this on a PPC Mac? You're sure you don't have an Intel Mac?

Try iClip. Not exactly identical, it's wonderful for storing clippings, and you can make text notes, too. Works great on the desktop. Reliable, cheap.
