Final Draft 6.0.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
Is anyone at Final Draft listening....?
The authorization code protection alienates loyal customers! The people at Final Draft justify its necessity by saying their program is one of the most heavily pirated on the market. Okay, maybe so, but I didn't pirate it, I bought it, I plunked down the cash. They don't care. And I wouldn't care either if the online authorization portion of the program wasn't so unreliable. These authorization "credits" (2 per customer) vanish sometimes without explanation. I've installed unrelated apps only to find FD has been mysteriously de-authorized. Tech support told me I should de-authorize FD prior to installing ANY new software on the hard drive, just to be safe. Thanks guys, great solution. When, playing it safe, I have tried to de-authorize my computer online, nothing but problems, because sometimes it fails to interface properly with the FD database, so your computer gets de-authorized, but the credit is not added to your account. So when you try to re-authorize you get the message: you have zero (0) authorizations left. Suddenly you can't save your work anymore (unless you remembered to bring the FD install disk). This happened one weekend when I was working on set and nearly cost me my job. And when you call them (having fun waiting on hold) to try to explain what happened and ask for another authorization, they give you a hard time, like you're working a swindle or something, even though you've been a registered user for 7 years... Biting the hand that feeds I think it's called. Lousy company. [alert admin]

ScanFont 4.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
This program creates algorithmic outlines of scanned font characters which can be imported into new font character sets, glyphs i guess they are called. But the way it "pixelates" the scanned characters (mapping them as a series of tiny squares on a grid) and then constructs the algorithm around the outside edges of these scanned characters means that the resulting font character is significantly fatter, bolder than the source material, particularly when the scanned original doesn't have perfectly smooth curves and edges... I know this because I went to great lengths to try to scan a rare old courier font (from a reasonably high quality Xerox), hoping to duplicate it. Sadly, after many hours spent, the scanned font resembles the original only if you stand at a distance and squint, all the subtle distinctions were lost... Perhaps I am asking too much. Anyway, Scanfont is a useful tool nonetheless, my sense is the program would do a fine job on handwriting and other less nitpicky font conversions... [alert admin]

Al 2.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
There's already a Simon freeware app that has fantastic graphics and sounds, so this feels like Radio Shack Tandy computer circa 1977... [alert admin]

Fetch Art for iTunes 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Works well. Easy to install and use. My only complaint is it doesn't pull up the right artwork for songs that don't have album names entered in iTunes, it sort of guesses (wrong). Maybe this is a lot to ask, that it could take a song title and convert it into an album name and then fetch the artwork... :) [alert admin]

Pop-Up Zapper 2.62 (Mac OS X)
Mircosoft has announced it is discontinuing any further development and support of IE for Macintosh, will release nothing beyond the present version. This product seems intended only for IE diehards with money to burn since it's tailored to work with what will soon become an obsolete browser, not to mention that others (Safari) do it for FREE... I had a negative experience with this company (registered Typewriter Keyboard only to find it would not work properly and had to argue for a refund) and posted feedback about it here to warn others and I now find that this feedback has been deleted. Register this app at your own risk. [alert admin]
