FontExplorer X Pro 2.0 (Mac OS X)
i downloaded the trial, prepared to pay for the application if it appeared to be well supported, stable, and to have worthwhile new functionality; so far not so good, but this will be a good test of the "well supported" aspect for now, i do not recommend this software; here's my bug report to Linotype; i will add a comment with the reply: the promised upward compatibility seems to have failed; is there any way to recover from this? i am on Mac OS X 10.4.11 on an MacBook Pro Core2Duo i have been using FontExplorerX (1.2.3) for some time, and had quite a few sets defined i installed the trial of Font ExplorerX Pro by copying the application to my hard drive, quitting all other apps, quitting FontExplorerX (1.2.3), and launching FontExplorerX Pro at this point, i was pleased to see that all my sets and activation statuses were preserved next i removed FontExplorerX items from System Prefs/Account/Login Items (assuming these were for version 1.2.3) and opened the prefs for FontExplorerX Pro; i noted that the preference was already set to launch at startup; i had to toggle this preference off and back on to get the FontExplorerX Pro item to appear in my Login Items then i restarted my computer; when restart was complete, i looked in FontExplorerX Pro and observed that all of my sets were completely gone; the "SETS" item in the left pane has a disclosure triangle to its left, however toggling it does not disclose anything; this is a very big problem for me [alert admin]

OpenDNS Updater 2.5 (Mac OS X)
this tool takes much more memory than its tiny task should need; over 100MB of private memory after it ran for a few hours on my Intel/10.4.11 system; this might be a memory leak; for something that runs 24/7 this is way too much for me...
also, since it is a free app with no implicit contract, and since i'm giving it my OpenDNS password, i really think it should be open source so that i can be comfortable what it's doing with my info...
also some smaller problems:
- Preferences window gets lost behind other windows -- once another window is in front of it, can't command-tab to it, can't resurface it by selected Preferences from the menu item, must hide everything or use Expose
- About window sometimes displays behind current app, result is similar problem to Preferences window
- after manually running Check for Updates, the menu item's menus are permanently greyed out

the addition of a meaningful (if brutally short) readme to the updater is a good move.. though first-timers will still wind up working backwards -- getting the updater via the VT link, then discovering the older version is needed, and then having to figure out exactly what respect the updater "updates" anything (it seems to just be a new version of the core app, not really an "updater").. all in all a very awkward approach before one can actually use the app.. also, running the "updater" no longer loads an offensive web page, so i'm improving my rating as appropriate -- this change somewhat improves the documentation and ease of use, and removes a very bad feature, the "tough guy".. i give quality & stability the benefit of a doubt [alert admin]

Forty-Two DVD-VX Plus 1.0.6 (Mac OS X)
*never* wrote in! and there were *no* instructions to ignore.. please check your assumptions.. i downloaded what VersionTracker offered, it came with no documentation.. i checked the developer's website, and saw no documentation, just an FAQ which didn't relate to what i was seeing.. i did notice the FAQ says "before emailing read the documentation", but it doesn't say where to find the documentation! suppose it is only found in the "full" installer? so it seems VersionTracker linked to the updater, not the full installer.. perhaps this was VersionTracker's mistake.. even so, if you don't include the least bit of documentation on the website, and if you provide software (updater or not) which automatically loads offensive webpages, you should expect negative reactions from potential customers suggestions: 1) enclose a meaningful readme with the updater, 2) drop the threatening webpage stuff [alert admin]

i downloaded the archive, found it contained no readme, and decided to take a risk and double-click the application file.. i expected a demo or at least some guiding information.. instead the app simply loaded two nearly identical pages in Safari with a stupid-looking tough-guy picture and a vague note about software piracy.. there were no instructions or information to help me understand why i should be viewing this message.. i had never run it before, yet it it seems like the app decided i was a pirate.. i am left with no way to judge whether the application might be useful to me.. i must conclude the developers are both sloppy and impolite, and because the application doesn't function, nor is it documented, i give it the lowest rating.. i'll stay away from this application, and others from kaisakura.com [alert admin]

FontAgent Pro 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)
i've tested all three major font managers, and would rank FontAgent Pro somewhat higher than Suitcase due to: better interface, font verification built in, good activation, and frequency of improvements (they had the first XPress 6 plug-in) Suitcase has an edge on speed and reporting features, though i haven't found FA Pro especially slow except for saving the database, which can be done in the background.. others have reported more problems with Suitcase bugs than i saw in my period of testing Font Reserve has a lousy interface, is full of bugs, has not been updated recently, and is now owned by Extensis -- worth watching for future developments, but not using at present unless you need Font Reserve Server [alert admin]

product is a wrapper for the limewire core, and so the limits on hosts, etc. are part of the consensus of gnutella develoepers on how to create the best possible network.. non-cooperating clients (those which may give you more hosts) are breaking the social contract and hurting the overall network.. (go to the Acquisition forums and make your complaints there if you want more details..) anyhow, the client has yet one annoying bug, which is the occasional loss of the queued downloads list on restart.. the developer is making dilligent efforts to fix this bug, and has been making an excellent, sustained effort overall [alert admin]

Acquisition 0.704 (Mac OS X)
in the current versions doesn't stop the app from working.. second, if a developer is small, but doing an excellent job, then it's appropriate to ask for financial support before the product is finished , since finances may be an obstacle to the product ever being completed (think of it as an investment).. third, if you are using the app, just go to the support forums (via the help menu) and you'll find a much more appropriate (and friendly) forum for hashing out the issues.. finally, my rating -- Acquisition has some quirks, but it works extremely well, and i do trust the developer to continue his already excellent record of steady improvements.. i am hoping the app 1) becomes scriptable, and 2) allows more complex search parameters (rather than single keywords) (to the person asking about "2.1G" that's supposedly 2.1 billion files available through a certain host, however hosts reporting "2.1G" are lying -- they aren't really giving access to that many files.. gnutella is a cooperative network, but there will always be cheaters and or software bugs distorting the information. as i understand it, all the numbers are at best approximate, and the number of hosts is sometimes more reliable than the number of files) [alert admin]

FoldersSynchronizer 2.1.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
support is lacking, which is very important for Mac OS X, but when i reported that to the developers they said they were working hard to get that fixed. looks good otherwise. [alert admin]

got a reply from support@fontexplorerx.com which looks very much like the used a keyword scanner on my email and automatically generated a response that addressed anything that might relate to those keywords -meh- i have disabled Pro's login items and returned to FontExplorer X 1.2.3; all my sets are still there ...

thanks for taking my suggestions seriously i did rate based on the merits -- it didn't run properly, it was offensive, the FAQ instructed me not to email until reading the manual, but the manual wasn't to be found.. all in all a bad user experience, on the merits as for the sarcasm about fine type to small too read, another wrong assumption.. requirements state forty-two 1.02 or later..i had forty-two (though my version had no version…
