David's Backgammon 5.7.7 (Mac OS X)

Dice Roll are Random!

I am the author of the game. I know for sure that the dice rolls are random, in all situations, for both players, and that they don't favor either player except by luck. The logic for the computer opponent's play has been developed over the last 20 years. It seems to be lucky because it plays the game so that more of the dice rolls it gets will be good rolls. That could appear as being lucky when it is just good playing. David Byrum [alert admin]

Just good playing, not cheating

Glad to hear that bgaddict has been enjoying the game. The dice rolls are selected at the time of the roll using a random number generator. That is true for all skill levels. No cheating going on. Years of programming and research, as well as playing backgammon, went into creating the skill of the computer opponent, not cheating. [alert admin]

Absolute Backgammon 5.0.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Challenging Game

The previous reviewer is not telling you the truth. I challenge him to reveal himself so we can determine his motives. Please reply to this note. The game is very challenging. Only a small percentage of the players playing the game are able to beat it more than they get beat. It is, by far, the most popular backgammon game for the Macintosh. For good reasons. Try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed by this game. [alert admin]

Board importing works

How are you importing the boards? I just tried 4 different ways. They all worked: - using the file menu - droping the board folder onto the game while it is running - droping the board file onto the game while it is running - double clicking on the board file while the game is running [alert admin]

rryanart review

I checked my records. He purchased the game 3 and a half months ago. Here is an un solicited response from him to me "Thanks I love the game." What more do I have to say. [alert admin]

Dice are not chosen to fit the situation - they ARE random!

Contrary to the previous reviewers belief, the dice rolls are not chosen to fit the situation. They are chosen using a random number generator. They do not favor either player in any situation except by luck. I have emailed him, explaining there is a feature in the game that makes this impossible. When the option/feature is selected, at the start of each game, the game creates enough random dice rolls for a whole game. These are saved in a disk file in the game folder. They can be viewed to see that the game is actually using them. Since the dice are determined at the start of the game, there is absolutely no way the dice could be chosen to fit a situation in the game much later. If it is still felt that the computer gets better rolls of the dice, there is also a selectable feature to be asked, at the start of each game, if you want to the computer's dice rolls. Author of Absolute Backgammon

The one star review below is from a representative of a competitor. Everytime I introduce a significant update, they have to give a bad review as quick as possible. If you don't have what it takes, then I quess you need to do things like this. Please continue on after his review to see the real reviews from people that really use the game. [alert admin]

David's Backgammon 4.9.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Author of David's Backgammon

Contrary to the comments by the previous reviewer, the dice rolls in the game are random and do not favor either player in any situation except by luck. The game keeps statistics on dice rolls to help show that the dice rolls don't favor either player. If you don't trust the dice, you can select to enter your own rolls. Or, at the end of the game, you can select to use the computer's dice rolls from the previous game. If anyone purchases the game then, through the statistics, can show me that the dice rolls are not random, I will gladly refund their money. Either the previous reviewer had bad luck or the computer opponent was a bit better than he expected. [alert admin]

Absolute Backgammon 3.2.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Absolutely Incorrect

The previous reviewer's comments about updating Absolute Backgammon are not true. Updating to a new version of OS X does not affect the registration status of the game. Also, updates will work as registered when downloaded, unless I have changed the password scheme. I do that about once a year to give some protection from hackers (crackers). Please scroll down to read the honest reviews of people that actually use my game. [alert admin]

esponse to the previous review from Domino_k

The FAKE review is the one that Domino_k just gave. If you read it you will see that he is pushing another product. It is not an honest review and is overly concerned about excellent reviews by actual users of the game. Strange that he is more concerned with discrediting previous honest reviewers. Why would he do this. Smart people can see through this this type of behavior for what it really is. I, as the author, have checked and know that each of them are customers that really feel that way about the game and have purchased Asbolute Backgammon because they really feel IT IS A 5 STAR product. Backgammon for the Mac

There are 5 different methods for moving the pieces that can be selected in Preferences. Perhaps one of them is like your previous backgammon game.

Mediocre

What is it that you think is out-of-date? What is confusing about the interface, all you have to do is push one of the buttons available, like Roll, Pass Cube, Take Back Move, Suggestions. Only the buttons that are appropriate are there to push. Can't get much simpler. To move a piece you just click on it, move the mouse then click again to put it down. Couldn't get much simpler. Or you can pick…

fine if you want to learn

While the rules are easy to learn, learning how to play good is much more difficult. I suggest, at minimum, to read a beginning book on backgammon, such as Bill Roberties "Backgammon For Winners". A little good strategy goes a long ways. You will win a lot more games in no time. Also, the game has a learn feature that lets you know when you have made a good or bad move. You can also review…

Worth it

Don't flatter yourself. I challenge you do show me something that you created -- ever - that is half as good! You obviously didn't check out the game features or you would have found how to speed the game up. If you don't like Farkle that is fine. But do your homework next time.

Why not full screen?

If you email me, maybe we can work something out to make it bigger. What is the screen resolution of your 30" screen? You know, not too many people have those! macgammon@aol.com

Good backgammon game

Thanks for the review. I agree that it would be nice to have updated graphics. But is way too difficult to do in this version. It has been available and improved for over 10 years now. It was created for fast download when connections speeds were very slow and floppy disks were used instead of CDs. But many people don't need better graphics. They like if for other reasons. You can turn off the speed of select…

Using different board skins/styles

All you have to do is to download the new skin, unzip the file, then drop the resulting folder onto the running game. How could it be simpler?
