ShareTool 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

Good but one thing missing

The product is good, with very good ease-of-use and interface. Secure screen sharing and data transfer via SSH works well. One thing is missing for a true remote control: if the remote computer shuts down and restarts, there is no way to log in since ShareTool only starts working once login is done. So login must be done with a competing product, e.g. Timbuktu, which fills this gap. This feature seems indispensable to me - if I want to control a computer remotely, I want to stay in control! Minor bugs which have cropped up from time to time have been fixed. Right now there is a problem with interaction with the KeyChain in Snow Leopard which will no doubt be fixed soon. The product advertises on-the-fly compression for data transfer, but is nevertheless no faster than a competing product (iGet) which doesn't do this. Upon sharing, ShareTool can alert the start of sharing via e-mail. However, the e-mail gives only the local IP number, which is useless for connecting via port forwarding if the remote computer is behind a router with dynamic IP address. It should also give the external IP (like GetMyIP or DynDNS) and include it in the e-mail. [alert admin]

ScriptLight 2.2 (Mac OS X)

Indispensable for scripters

This app is indispensable if you have a whole library of scripts which interact with each other. Particularly useful for applescripts which are not saved as text files, making searches across the whole library with editors such as BBEdit impossible. Recommended. [alert admin]

iDrive 1.3.1 (Mac OS X)

No private encryption

Private encryption is available only for Windows but not for Mac according to the website. I would therefore not want to use this until I control the encryption. [alert admin]

PDF Merge 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Preview does the same

Preview will do the same thing: just drag the PDFs onto the sidebar of a PDSF opened in Preview. Since every Mac has Preview, why add another program? [alert admin]

RouteBuddy 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Map upload to Garmin

RouteBuddy looks like a tempting program. However, I own a Garmin USB device. To use it on the road or track I need to upload maps to its memory chip(s) (North America, Europe, both topographical and street type). Since RouteBuddy is unable to do this (correct me if I'm wrong) I have no choice but to buy maps from Garmin (e.g. the Europe maps is about $300), install BootCamp and/or Parallels and/or Fusion, and buy and install Windows. Having spent all this money on GPS and Windows products from Garmin, why should I buy RouteBuddy and all its individual maps in addition? I will end up spending about twice the amount again for the RouteBuddy software and all its maps that I am already forced to spend for Garmin software and maps. Until RouteBuddy is able to download maps to the Garmin USB device this is simply too expensive, despite tempting features of RouteBuddy vs. klunky Windows GPS implementations. [alert admin]

iPartition 3.0.0 (Mac OS X)

iPartition/iDefrag works as advertised

I defragmented and repartitioned two drives (one having Leopard and Tiger partitions, one having Leopard and Windows FAT partitions), first with iDefrag (full) followd by iPartition. This worked perfectly, albeit slowly. I lost no data and there was no problem. I did, however, as recommended in the FAQ, do this from a bootable DVD I prepared first following the instructions rather than from the hard drive. And I had a complete backup first - as one should always before repartitioning, and as is also recommended by the data manufacturer. In case of a problem, data loss is then impossible - only time loss. But there was no problem. [alert admin]

KaleidaGraph 4.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Excellent support for critical points

I have been using Kaleidagraph for over 10 years. This week, I contacted support because text input no longer worked from AppleScript with the new all-Unicode AppleScript in Leopard (see http://developer.apple.com/releasenotes/AppleScript/RN-AppleScript/index.html). They responded overnight and sent me the patched version 4.0.4 the next day. It works fine. So - excellent support for removing bugs, even those not of their making. Response to demands for new features is slower - I have been asking for improved scripting support for years. Wit IGOR, you get a much more powerful program, more math, more curve types, contour and 3D support with all the scripting support you might want but with a much steeper learning curve (2500 pp. of doc!) and for 2-1/2 times the price ($550.00 compared to 199.95 commercial for Kaleidagraph, or 395.00 vs 139.95 academic). I use Kaleidagraph for 2D, IGOR for contour and 3D right now. [alert admin]

USGerman Keyboard Layout 0.9.8 (Mac OS X)

US International instead

I have been using USInternational (released 2002-02-08 !!) also available on Version Tracker, for years. It does this and more: German (including scharfes s, Umlaut, etc.), accented French, accented Spanish, etc. on a US keyboard, all intuitive, and it still works perfectly under Leopard. [alert admin]
