Tri-BACKUP 5.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Usage tip for Tiger users

I have recently had a problem creating a bootable copy of my system disk with Tri-Backup 5.1.2 under Mac OS 10.4.11. Tri-Backup scheduler would crash at various stages during the copy process for no apparent reason. I emailed the developer who got back to me straight away explaining that under Tiger the process window should be closed. Apparently Tiger has a different routine to display icons and with the progress window open Tri-Backup will try to create/display icons for the files being copied causing it to crash. I can verify that my copy process worked as expected with no errors when the progress window was closed. Leopard users are not affected by this problem. [alert admin]

Tri-BACKUP 5.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Extremely reliable backup software with amazing features

I have been using various backup software over the years and had some unexplainable behaviour and disasters with a couple of programs. This was not down to operator error but flakey applications. I work in music production and have to look after backups on a daily basis. That includes big project folders over various drives and huge amounts of data - hundreds of GB on a normal album session. The only software that has not let me down ever is Tri-Backup. It is not a widespread program and the developer is small. However, I have converted many people over the years and never heard of any horror stories. One of the users on this website commented about a lack of communication from the developer. I have had a support request once which was followed up the next day and fixed my problem. Some people complain about Tri-Backup being too complicated. This is not true. Whilst it is not as straightforward as SuperDuper or Silverkeeper it is a lot more advanced than those applications and has features that are quite remarkable considering the price. Also, there are a lot of hints built into the main interface so getting started should not be a problem. However, when you work on big projects with lots of backups going on several times per day over several sets of hard drives etc you will come to appreciate Tri-Backups reliability and customization. I have used SuperDuper and it seems very reliable and has a great user interface. I would say that SuperDuper will be the program for you if you are a home user in need of bootable safety copies etc. Since it is half the price of the regular version of Tr-Backup it makes sense to go for SuperDuper. However, if you need the functionality and customization that Tri-Backup offers you will be hard pushed to find a better piece of software for the price. All of this is true for the standard version. There is a pro version for $35 more which offers some advanced functionality which you may never need. This is a nice touch by the developer as it reduces the price for many users without being a restricted cut-down type software. [alert admin]

Contour Shuttle 2.1.3 (Mac OS X)

installs o.k. but does not apply custom settings

Installs o.k. here and software runs fine. However, I customised a template and saved it under a different name. Half my settings work, the other ones trigger the template's functions. The software tells me all my functions are the way I want them but it keeps executing the default button presses. Very annoying. [alert admin]

VisualHub 1.28 (Mac OS X)

Brilliant!

This is a very good application. Does what it says on the tin. I used to use iSquint (the free version of this) but VisualHub is much better and well worth the price. On my Mac Pro (Quad 2.66) it blazes through conversions and does a twenty minute TV episode in about 5-6 minutes using a high quality setting. [alert admin]

Web Dumper 2.3.8 (Mac OS X)

Does what it says on the tin

This app worked great for me although I have not used it much and never tried to download complicated websites with lots of plug-in use etc. Definitely recommended. [alert admin]

NO Rubbish

I can't believe the previus poster did not get this to work. Web Dumper puts in http:// automatically for you. It gets confused when you put it in as well. How arrogant to slag this great application off like that.
