Camino 1.0 (Mac OS X)

took long enough

I can draw a few conclusions about open source software based on my experience with Camino. 1. The software can be great (at least when on a Mac and the devs care about good UI). 2. Quality takes time. I started following the project and often using the browser full-time sometime in 2002. [alert admin]

Grants.gov 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

good, but...

This is great that they've created this, but it's sort of rewarding bad behavior. First of all, it kind of annoys me that the U.S. government is contracting the whole thing to a Canadian firm when I'm sure there are many, many capable developers in the U.S., but that's really beside the point. The point is that the U.S. government is starting to get heat for this... the news was even on the front page of Yahoo today, which means that the story is out for the general population. What if they see this and then just decide that there's no use in paying to get the proper work done, since somebody already went and picked up their slack? I hope that's not the case. [alert admin]

Microsoft Messenger 5.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Anybody seriously use this?

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Adium is probably a better choice. If MSN messenger is half as bad as the official AIM client, then you should probably stay far away from this. [alert admin]

My Calorie & Nutrition Counter 1.0.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

needs a lot of work

The ugly OS 9 screenshot with three windows where a proper interface should have one isn't exactly screaming, "try me." I've been looking for something like this, but the interface needs some SERIOUS work. It reminds me of Ircle...and I hate Ircle. [alert admin]

Snak 5.0.2 (Mac OS X)

ugh

Is it really *that* hard to put a proper OS X interface on a program? OS X has been around for a long time now. I think it's getting to the point where it's not asking a lot. Snak is a nice IRC app, but it's really annoying to still see such inconsistent and weird looking interfaces on an otherwise fine program. [alert admin]

VERSAVISION?

1. What is VERSAVISION. 2. Do I need it? 3. Seriously, do I need it? 4. Why can't they explain this? [alert admin]

Transmit 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Contextual menu

Um, why was the contextual menu item to make a new folder removed from 3.0.1 and 3.0.2? It 's the one thing I like about the god-awful CuteFTP I'm forced to use at work, and I was very happy to see it in Transmit. What gives? [alert admin]

Transmit 3.0 (Mac OS X)

No difference? Are you serious?

If you don't see the improvements, then you must not be looking very hard. This has some really huge new features. This is absolutely great. I've been using Transmit since the early days, and I have to say this upgrade is the best yet. It's *long overdue* but I'm willing to wait if it's going to be this good. As usual, Panic has a winner. Apple iPhoto 5.0.1 (Mac OS X)

79 bucks for *this*??

Like a lot of people, the only iLife app I use is iPhoto (let's be honest, iTunes is *not* part of iLife). There are a heck of a lot more people who need to manage hundreds or thousands of digital photos than those who want to edit home movies. In that sense, iDVD and iMovie are totally unlike iPhoto and iTunes. iDVD and iMovie are for creating things. iPhoto and iTunes are for organizing them. It's ridiculous to charge $79 for a relatively simple program, and throw in a free one and two that you'll probably never use just to make it seem like you're getting something for your money. All that said, this $79 program crashes consistently when I try to make a book. [alert admin]

Skype 0.15.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Auto launch at login

STOP STOP STOP setting the program to launch by default when you log in. This is absolute crap. This is not Windows, don't treat us like Windows users. I use Skype once in a while, and it's absolutely stupid for it to launch automatically without ever first asking me if I would like this behavior. YES, I know how to disable it, and I did, but that is not the point. The point is that it's rude and presumptious for a developer to assume that because you put an app on your system, that you will ALWAYS want it to run. If I want a program to launch at login, I will set it to do that. DON'T assume what I want my computer to do. If you want to have any success on the Mac platform, you're going to have to learn to play by the Mac rules. If you make a program that does whatever the heck it wants and has an ugly Windows interface, they you might as well just start whining now about how you don't get the support you need from users. It'll be your own fault. [alert admin]

Auto launch at login IS an option

So a platform where other companies decide how you use your computer is best?

yes - a valid point

I haven't installed 1.0.0.0 yet (why so many .0's?), but if it gives you the option during setup, that's better than nothing, but still not perfect, as long as the default is for it to be on. When I installed whatever ridiculous version number it was that I installed, I did not get a setup option. Maybe this was because I was replacing a previous version, that also did not have it. …
