VueScan 8.4.72 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
When it first came out, this software was a godsend for scanners with poorly written or non-existent software from the manufacturer, particularly on the Mac. Then, from my perspective, the program gradually became more complicated to use, slow, and tended to produce unacceptable results. At this point, I stopped using VueScan altogether. Recently, sick of all the craplets HP installs and updates endlessly on Windows machines just to use their scanners, I have gone back to VueScan and found it to be once again easy to use and to produce excellent results. As an added bonus, I could uninstall the HP craplets since VueScan uses its own driver for my scanner. Shareware is sometimes abandoned by the developer and becomes unworkable. VueScan, in contrast, has been around for many years and seems to be as aggressively supported and updated by the developer as it was in the beginning. [alert admin]
