BatChmod 1.5 (Mac OS X)

Essential Tool

Batchmod is one of those apps that I'm really happy to have on my hard drive. Thank you, Arbysoft. The addition of ACLs (even if it's only to view them) is perfect! [alert admin]

Viewpoint Media Player 3.5.1013 (Mac OS X)

Spyware/Malware

Not sure about the Mac version, but if I find this on any Macs, I'm going to highly recommend that it be uninstalled.

The reason the company can claim that it's installed on 60% of Windows PCs is because it's bundled with AIM - and every time you upgrade AIM, it reinstalls itself. You get rid of it, and it comes back.

They've also got (or had) a company representative posting all around the internet, trying to counter people's claims about the software. See this link for yourself.

My recommendation: don't install this software on your Mac, and remove it from any Windows PCs that you can.

ImageWell 3.5 (Mac OS X)

What a shame

I originally picked this tool up because it was free, and could do basic tasks like resizing images without hassle (and without having to open a larger tool, like Photoshop, just to resize an image). I'll have to find something else. [alert admin]

Alarm Clock 2.4.5 (Mac OS X)

Please make this Leopard compatible

I really miss this app. Could you please make it compatible with Leopard? I began using Aurora, because it was free and Alarm Clock just wouldn't work in 10.5...and Aurora just switched to shareware. I see people having various issues with Alarm Clock in 10.5, but my issue is that the built-in music player just doesn't play anything (but it thinks that it does). The alarm goes off at the correct time, but you can't hear anything play. I'd be happy to do beta testing, if that helps. [alert admin]

WhatSize 4.0 (Mac OS X)

No longer freeware!

Despite the lack of a version history for 10.4.0, and that VersionTracker still says it's freeware, upon launching the application you find that it wants you to pay for a $13 license. Nowhere on the developer's site do I see that WhatSize is no longer freeware - you can't even buy the app on the developer's site, you've got to buy it through the app itself. I've used WhatSize for years because it was a great, free alternative to OmniDiskSweeper. Now, I'll have to reassess which one I'm going to use. Furthermore, as I trashed my old copy for this one (because there was NO indication it was no longer freeware), I'm more likely to pay the extra $2 to The Omni Group instead. I'm giving it 4 stars because although the app itself is great, the developer clearly has no idea how to transition a freeware app into shareware. This is unfortunate, I really liked this software. Dasboard widgets are for 10.4+

How can this boast compatibility with 10.3? Dashboard widgets only work on Mac OS X 10.4 and higher. [alert admin]

iTaf 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Confusing

I like the potential this app has. From what the web site said, and from the options I did find, I liked it. I was frustrated with trying another iTunes alarm clock app and finding that it not unmute my computer first! I mute my computer so I don't hear iChat sounds at night. I woke up late today and nearly missed an appointment, and found my computer playing music while muted (and had been for about an hour or two). Opened iTaf and it asked if I wanted to install the daemon. Not necessary for me, so I said 'no.' Then appeared a window with several buttons. No tooltips, and when I went to the Help menu, I was told that "Help isn't available for iTaf." Poked around the preferences, found that it supported unmuting the computer when an alarm goes off...so I attempted to set a test alarm, which didn't go off. There is also no AM or PM when setting an alarm, so that might be why...maybe the author felt people didn't need alarms for night, too? Oh well, I've moved on...found that Alarm Clock (also on VersionTracker) does what I need. And it's free, too...though not open source. Would be nice if they made their interface more intuitive, or at least provided some documentation as to how things work. [alert admin]

10 Seconds With Tyler Durden 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Screensaver?

I see more potential for this as a screensaver...as a standalone app, it kind of gets in the way of whatever I'm doing because of the large Tyler image. Awesome, though...thanks for this. :D [alert admin]

Correction

It is not free anymore, but the old version (still offered for download on their site) still works on Leopard.

Crashes Leopard

Alarm Clock doesn't freeze on Leopard for me, but the alarm window pops up and seems to think it's playing music - though, nothing's coming out of my speakers. It's kind of weird, actually. I was too tired to check, but either it's not playing any of the music files, or it's not managing to unmute my speakers. Either way, I hope the developer fixes this soon. I love this app, and I've…
