MAMP PRO 1.7.2 (Mac OS X)

Works Very Well - Simple Setup

I use MAMP Pro alongside Panic Coda as a local development test server for my websites beffor publishing to the live server and it works great - plus it gives me the additional benefit of being able to quickly preview my code in a number of different actual browsers, not some half baked web preview window (hello dreamweaver I'm talking about YOU). If you work on just one site then the free MAMP is probably the best option, however if you work on a number of different sites concurrently then the simple virtual host setup in the Pro version is definitely worth the money. Recommended. [alert admin]

Adobe Creative Suite 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Ouch!

What ARE you doing Adobe? It seems that in the rush to release the next cash cow upgrade you bypassed the QA team entirely. OK I'm using a PPC (G5) system but since upgrading from CS3 Premium to CS4 Premium, Flash takes ages to start up, Photoshop is noticeably slower/unresponsive, Dreamweaver has trouble displaying the code view without glitches (even with the rubbish new code navigator feature turned off) and still crashes quite often. Pretty awful. [alert admin]

Coda 1.6.2 (Mac OS X)

Simply great software

Anyone fed up with the instability and bugs of Dreamweaver (and can code) should seriously try this app - rock solid stable, clean interface, no bloated feature creep, the power of Transmit FTP built-in, web clips and some pretty cool plugins starting to appear from the community too. Love it. [alert admin]

QuarkXPress 7.3 (Mac OS X)

Happy with QuarkXPress again

This is a really good, stable update. QuarkXPress seems really snappy on PPC based macs and I have not found any major bugs or issues at all yet (have not tested on intel based machine though) - and I am finally happy to upgrade our whole studio from horrible v6.5. I am actually quite surprised that Quark got their act together, and was toying with the idea of moving our users over to InDesign before this update. [alert admin]

Adobe GoLive 9.0 (Mac OS X)

Still has trouble displaying page previews correctly

If Adobe want to now push this product as a more designer-friendly WYSIWYG way of getting your content on to the internet, they should have at least ensured the previewing of CSS based websites is bulletproof, but there are still the same page rendering problems that Golive has had for countless generations. I have been a user of this product since Golive Cyberstudio 2, way back, and luckily I can now hand code and preview all sites within browsers, but I could not recommend this product at all for anyone starting out on website design. You have to continually delve into the code to correct bad elements that Golive writes, and it cannot preserve certain code. For example it changes most UTF encoded special characters back to their Mac equivalents which, as I have to create some sites in multiple languages with special accents, is a real headache. It is a real shame as this was a really good product before Adobe aquired it, they have systematically destroyed its useability with every release since. [alert admin]

Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Works well with Orange M3100

Had a lot of problems syncing with v2.5, but ever since V3 it works great on an Orange M3100, all plugins seem to work as advertised. Now in the 3.0.2 version the M3100 is officially supported too. It does help to have your address book in tidy order beforehand though. [alert admin]

QuarkXPress 7.2 (Mac OS X)

Quark bashers, start your engines

Here comes the usual XPress is cr*p, InDesign is great nonsense. Well we use both XPress 7 and InDesign CS2 on a regular basis in our studio and they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Plus, competition is good. [alert admin]

Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Seems to work better than 2.5

After having varying results with version 2.5 on my Orange/HTC C600 (Windows Mobile 5) which was officially supported to start with, then not, I was not expecting great things from this upgrade. But this version seems to work more as advertised (iTunes playlist syncs do not seem to work for me though). It does seem to take a bit of trial and error and trawling through tech notes to get this software to behave. I also have Microsoft ActiveSync 2.5 on my PC and that does not work at all with my phone apart from time syncing, so maybe some of the software problems are due to the WM5 platform itself? Camino 0.8 (Mac OS X)

Best OSX browser by a mile

Kicks Safari squarely up the arse yet again! It seems like lots of nice features are planned for 0.9, and some are already being rolled into the post-0.8 nightlies (certain features had to be kept back so as to not break OSX10.1 support, which is going to be dropped from 0.9 onwards). There is a very active forum worth looking at if you want to contribute to the future of Camino: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=12 [alert admin]

I don't see how it's "More Elegant" than other browsers??

Camino v2.0 (currently at beta stage) uses Gecko rendering engine 1.9 so should sail through Acid2 (and maybe Acid3, not sure) when it's released shortly.

Art vs. Technology - Technology vs. Art

The drawbacks of tables are well documented, but to cut a long story short it comes down to the display of the same page content across a wide range of devices including mobile phones, PDAs, and screen readers for the visually impaired. The use of tables for structuring make this almost impossible. While this may not be too much of an issue today, it will within a short time, and it is good practice to move…

Seizes up on startup with Tiger

Suitcase (v11.0.4) is also causing real problems for me in Tiger. Worked fine in Panther but hangs all the time now, even done a clean install. None of my fonts are corrupt either so it is not because of that.

HOW YOU CAN DRAG AND REARRANGE YOUR TABS !

Drag and rearrange of tabs is scheduled for 0.9 release of Camino, in fact the latest nightly builds have a completely new and improved tabbing system.

Nothing downloading. Bad deja vu of iSwipe...

Use Xfactor, it connects to all the same networks as Poisoned but seems much better at actually getting stuff. BTW I'm not anything to do with either developer.

Fix the Speed of Flash

Are you using the latest release of the flash plug-in? The performance issues with flash and camino on my computer which were present in 0.7 seemed to have been fixed months ago in the nightly builds. Flash runs as fast now in camino as it does in sarari (albeit both being slower than PC flash performance, but that is down to macromedia to improve).

Almost Perfect

Autofill is being implemented prior to 0.9 I believe, judging by posts in the Camino forum on Mozillazine.
