fennel DVDManager 1.6.7 (44) (Mac OS X)
ALERT: Amazon-based Web Sources at Risk
Dear fsDM Users,
Through this alert bulletin, we'd like to let you know that we're now aware of problems re the retrieval of DVD details through Amazon-based Web sources. We'd also like to tell you that we've already started investigating what could be the cause of such an issue, and we'll try to keep you informed of our progress towards solving it. Be assured we'll do our best to get your beloved DVD manager back and running as expected as soon as possible. But we don't ignore the possibility that those Web sources may be temporarily removed from fsDM if a new implementation of those retrieval mechanisms was going to be needed…
We're really sorry for the inconvenience, and we'd like to thank you all for your patience and understanding in the meantime.

As promised in my last comment for v1.1.2 (see below, 5/5/2005 06:22AM PST), here is your "5 Stars" rating you deserve now that you dropped SIT format to ZIP one. Thanks again for the app, by the way! [alert admin]

FontDoc 1.1.2 (Mac OS X)
Please update your distribution model (from .sit to .dmg or .zip)
With Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger", Apple is no more shipping a means to uncompress .sit archives by default. The *standard* distribution model is now .pkg installers, .dmg images, or .zip archives according to what has to be distributed. So please update your distribution model and help Apple to improve consistency even more! Thx in advance. Note: I'll "5 Stars"-rate your amazing simple, yet efficient font viewer once I can access the .app file right from a Tiger clean install ;) ! And no: this is *not* an incentive to migrate your archive; I really loved your program on Panther. [alert admin]

fennel DVDManager 1.6 (Mac OS X)
Or "A tutorial to get your DVD library back once on Mac OS X v10.4":
* If you chose to upgrade from Mac OS X "Panther" (or "Jaguar"), you shouldn't have anything to do: your user's account should be preserved, your data still available; you'd only have to launch (and enjoy using) fennel DVDManager under Tiger.
* If you chose to clean install Mac OS X "Tiger" (i.e., through some formatting of your startup volume), be sure you've backup-ed your entire "DVDManager" folder (which is located in your user's account "Library" folder) before running this erasing installation process: you can either use Finder's File > Create Archive of "DVDManager" menu item (good), or our new File > Export DVD Library to Desktop action from fsDM v1.6 (recommended).
Once under Tiger, you'd only have to expand this .zip archive into your new user's account "Library" folder, for fennel DVDManager to transparently load your data back on its next launch.
Don't hesitate to contact us directly for any question… We wish you the smartest transition to Tiger ;) ! [alert admin]

fennel DVDManager 1.5.9 (Mac OS X)
fsDM & Mac OS X v10.3.9 (follow-up)
Regarding this recent Mac OS X v10.3.9 issue, one can also try the simpler trick which consists in updating the prebinding.
To do that, simply execute the following command in a Terminal:
sudo update_prebinding -root / -force
This process may take many minutes to fulfill completely; but it may also avoid to some of you the heavyweight re-installation of Apple's Security Update 2005-002 (even if it's the solution we prefer…)
Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to contact us directly for any question/problem.

fennel DVDManager 1.5.8 (Mac OS X)
With the just released Mac OS X v10.3.9, some are experiencing some issue while launching fennel DVDManager :( ! So here's a tip to fix your environment: simply reinstall Apple's Security Update 2005-002 (Download — 16.4 MB), and everything should be working just fine again… [alert admin]

fennel DVDManager 1.4.2 (Mac OS X)
FYI, a new build (v19) of fennel DVDManager 1.4.2 was just uploaded to our servers; it includes a new bug fix where previews didn't "stick" when updated from the Internet. Thanks to Xavier L. for the bug report, and sorry for the inconvenience :( ! [alert admin]

biakfennel DVDManager 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)
v2.1.1 is not qualified for Mac OS X v10.3.5 (yet)
We want to inform our users that we're currently experiencing a serious issue around our Amazon-based "Retrieve" action since the recent Mac OS X v10.3.5 update. For the time being--and until we manage to fix, and then qualify our product regarding this new OS version--, we advise you not to use Amazon as a source for retrieving the details of your DVDs. A workaround could be to only use IMDb's (or to manually add them...) We're sorry for the inconvenience, and wanted you to know we're working hard to get this functionality back ASAP. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding. [alert admin]

W-Creative, the XML option won't work as it's not designed to address such a use case. I'm not aware of any MySQL export issue re CSV, so this might not be a big problem; maybe some missing quotes, or a misplaced comma... If you send it to me, I'll give a look at it and report my findings. Our CSV import mechanism works for most users, and I'm of course willing to make it work…

Hi W-Creative. We're aware of some issues related to some versions of Excel not exporting standard CSV-based files. Could you please contact us by e-mail, and we'll work this out together. Thanks in advance. (And, for your information, XML-based import is only targeted to some very specific migrations; I'd presume your solution is CSV...) Cheers. -- Fred >> fennelsoftware.com

Lou Zer: First of all, thanks for the kind words; it really seems you've understood the mere goal of our product. Then, thanks a bunch for the useful feedback, the good news being that all of your "Like to have" features are in our To-do List, with your first request already implemented in our internal build… (OK, the "bad" news would be that we don't know yet when we'll be ready to release…

Hi Drewman21. You're right: management of genres is currently very basic. The good news is that we're working on freeing them in a future version :) ! Thanks for your patience though, our resources being very limited; and thanks for the kind words, always appreciated ;) !

Really? What was the error message you got? Did Apple's Console utility logged something about this issue? All in all, don't hesitate to contact us directly by e-mail, and we'll do our best to help you. Sounds like a retry could be worth… since only 2 people out of a few hundreds experienced some issue here. We've just done the test of downloading all of our 3 DMG archives (Standard, Lite/EN &…

Q: Does fennelDVDmanager fit for this?
Hi Claudio, and thx for your feedback. So, to answer your question... We may not be the right people to say it's the best tool around for such a thing, but we think DVDManager can handle it quite nicely. Indeed, either through its "Notes" field (into which you could detail the many items you've recorded on a single DVD); or through DVDManager's ability to create virtual box sets (which are then displayed in a smart hierarchical way),…

Thanks for the feedback, glovboi. You're perfectly right; a smarter solution exists (through a dynamic switching via a preference, for example) and was even studied before going to the current "Pretty Format" action. But, due to current design constraints, we've decided to deliver a functional implementation *NOW*, to then update it to the smarter one later. That way, everyone's glad ;) ! Hope you understand. And regarding a warning, we understand; we'll try to stress this in…
