WikiNotes 1.0 (Mac OS X)
This app seems like it could be a pretty good stand-in for VoodoPad but it's got that not-so-fresh incompleteness about it. For instance, the author couldn't be bothered to update the main menu with the application name (so you're left with "Quit NewApplication" and "About NewApplication", and "New Application Help" in the Help menu (which produced a dialog stating help is not available). It's a great start for a free app but you definitely get just what you paid for. I look forward to seeing what updates do for this app in the future. [alert admin]

I was really hoping for a fresh start to get away from Adobe's GoLive mess. I've spent the last two and a half hours trying to build a fresh site from scratch. First, it was difficult to find my way around. New software always is, but the basic elements common to all software in its genre should be easily found. Add to that the fact that these guys seem to be adverse to using well-established industry standard terms to define certain elements of a web page. Second, this software has *major issues* when selecting items. Tables in particular. Third, the default behavior in a lot of respects is a bit counter-intuitive. All imported images (that I dragged from Finder at least) are automatically set to 75% quality. Good software shouldn't assume something needs changed right away ... leave my graphics the h**l alone, thanks! Dragging images anywhere near others seems to be interpreted as "mash these two together" in some instances (I was trying to create close-knit navigation rollover buttons). These issues are infuriating. Fourth and finally, the software crashes frequently. VERY frequently. ***TOO*** frequently. This application could be great if it's cleaned up and THOROUGHLY BETA TESTED. Unfortunately it is not ready for professionals (despite its name) and definitely has *not* been thoroughly tested. I know this because I am using a freshly-installed, stock OS X 10.4.3 machine with a fresh user account. Standard environment yet the application creashes a lot. Add to that the nearly $300 US price tag for the pro version boxed set and the value plummets. Sorry, guys, I'll have to pass. [alert admin]

Manuscript 1.5.5 (Mac OS X)
This app has not changed much in several years' time. It doesn't take advantage of *any* of what OS X currently has to offer applications. It seems completely at odds with its OS. There are better alternatives. I recommend CopyWrite by Bartas Technologies. If that doesn't suit you, try Ulysses from Blue-Tec (though they're a lot more expensive) or Avenir from Return Self. CopyWrite 2.2.6 (Mac OS X)
I've read several people having crashes, etc. I've experienced none of these problems. CopyWrite has been a solid foundation for my writing. I have MANY hours invested in several novels and countless articles (some published, some not), all written with CopyWrite. Even when I've made some dumb mistakes with my data, I was easily able to recover with the automatic backup feature. The Goal Meter and the full-screen editor with its hide-away controls are two of my favorite features. This app is a daily companion I could not live without. Someone said (I think here at VersionTracker) that software that claims to make you 'write better' is bull**** ... I think that person missed the point. It won't make you a better writer it helps you with the PROCESS OF WRITING. In that goal, Bartas was a resounding success. Their support is fast and very detail-oriented and they constantly hint at improvements to come. Having used it awhile, I can vouch for the fact that they do regularly update and improve it. I STRONGLY recommend any professional writer try this software out. [alert admin]

StoryWritingAssistant 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I spent about twenty minutes with this application and I'm sorry to say that US $40 is an unrealistic expectation. This application has interface problems (the inexplicable 'severity' indicator, for instance, just doesn't work right). It also has little to offer over its competition and it does have plenty of it. There are Ulysses, CopyWrite, Avenir, Jer's Novel Writer, and a few other weird (as in nothing like any Mac software I've ever used) ones. I ended up sticking with CopyWrite (I just recently registered after jumping back and forth), but as I read in the feedback, it's not necessarily for everyone's preferred work style. The bottom line is there are alternatives to StoryWritingAssistant and until the price is lowered and the software goes through its share of growth and development, I recommend trying something else. It just isn't ready for professionals. [alert admin]

That it's missing one feature YOU require does not mean it's not "ready for prime-time". I've been very happy with my purchase and this latest update adds even more polish to an already excellent app. It's unfair to rate it so low because it's missing something you require.

I'm very sorry, but your beta testing procedures need a SERIOUS overhaul. The issues I ran into during my testing revealed a lot of instabilities and UI problems (see my top-level post from a few minutes ago). Freeway Pro was *not* thoroughly beta tested before release. This alone shakes my faith in your company to the core; I cannot invest my time in a product that has such issues and is so lightly tested. The…
