Aqua Data Studio 7.5 (Mac OS X)

$400 for a simple SQL query tool? WOW!

Well, the 6.x version was free, and 7.5 is $400 for 1 license, even though it's pretty much the same as 6.x. It's a fairly simple SQL query tool - there are plenty a lot more complex tools out there for Windows, for example, which are _free_. There aren't as many for Mac OS X, unfortunately, but that definitely does not justify the price tag. The 7.5 suffers from most of the same issues as the 6.5: it's fat and slow (as you'd expect from a Java app), and many of the standard Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts do not work (close window for example). Beyond that - it's just a SQL query tool. And it's about 10 times more expensive than it should be. [alert admin]

MediaLink 1.72 (Mac OS X)

And it only took 1 year...

... to fix the errors on high-speed links. They blamed everything - the network, Sony breaking PS3 software et cetera. And finally - surprise! - the issue turned out to really IN the MediaLink... Oh, well - a little too late: I'm guessing most people have switched to other solutions by now... [alert admin]

Electric Sheep 2.6.9 (Mac OS X)

Still no automatic torrent downloading :(

ElectricSheep is one of the best screensavers out there. However, the Mac OS X version gets little love from the developers: while Windows version has had built-in bittorrent client, used to download new animations, for quite some time now, Mac OS X version still uses old unreliable way of downloading them from an http server (which doesn't work most of the time) :( [alert admin]

Adium 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Broken MSN support

Adium has for a long time been the best multi-protocol IM app for Mac. But unfortunately, the latest versions are, for the most part, broken. Version 1.3.1 has had MSN support working, but the library, used for MSN protocol, has had its internal debugging messages enabled, which would generate thousands of messages in system logs (and which would, consequentially, prevent Apple laptops from sleeping, since they won't automatically go to sleep mode if there's any disk activity going on). Version 1.3.2 switches to a new MSN support library, which - surprise! - breaks Live Communication service compatibility, so no contacts, created on a private Live Communicator server (for example your company's internal server) will ever show up, and the Adium will bombard you with messages each time it connects to MSN about whether or not you'd like to add a new contact (which will not show up as available even if you say "Yes"). The bug report has been created over 3 months ago, while 1.3.2 was still in its beta stages, and then 1.3.2 was release, with the bug still in it. It sucks to have to switch away from such a great application, and I really hope the Adium developer team is going to fix it soon. If you, however, don't care much about MSN support - then sure, Adium is the best IM client for Mac. [alert admin]

Simplify Media 1.0.0.1080 (Mac OS X)

Great idea, but it's a memory hog

While the idea is great, this thing eats A LOT of memory. Last time I killed it on my Mac, it was eating over 700 megabytes of memory. Either a memory leak, or it's keeping all iTunes library info in memory (I have approx. 7000 songs in the library). [alert admin]

Transmission 1.00 (Mac OS X)

Hold off the upgrade

uPnP is still not working with 0.96 (D-Link GamerLounge). Rolled back to 0.93 - so far the best version, in my opinion. Getting 10-100 times faster speeds with 0.93. Other than that, overall a great BitTorrent client, highly recommended, but only older versions. Latest versions seem to be screwed up mostly :( [alert admin]

VPN Tracker 5.0 (Mac OS X)

Buy-buy, VPN Tracker

Intel Macs have been out for two years, but Equinux still didn't manage to produce a Universal version of VPN tracker utility - only kernel extension. The utility that loads the extension and established connection was still PowerPC, so it normally takes about 20-30 seconds to launch it. Now, after two years, Leopard comes along. VPN Tracker 4 is not compatible with Leopard, and instead of making it compatible, Equinux releases VPN Tracker 5. Nearly a month after Leopard's release, and at least half-a-year since early betas of Leopard became available to developers. VPN Tracker 5 requires you to purchase a new license. What? After 2 years of doing what? There were a few releases of version 4, but mostly minor ones. So after two years of waiting for a completely Universal version we get a "rewritten" version, which costs additional money, and no way to get around it. The funny thing is that the new version, while Universal binary at last, still takes just as much time to launch as the PowerPC version. So no, I for one am not upgrading, thank you very much. I've reconfigured our VPN gateway to use L2TP-over-IPSEC and simply use native Mac OS X support for it. Works like a charm, and I don't have to pay to become a persistent beta-tester of VPN Tracker. Works fine, but...

... what's the deal with the new release every day??? And no "What's new" at all... :( Why there's new releases every day? What changed from the previous release? Same goes for the developer's website: no news whatever. [alert admin]

VPN Tracker 4.9.1 (Mac OS X)

Keep looking for something else...

I've been using VPN tracker for quite awhile. It was OK for some time, while there was no Intel support. Then... Intel support has been announced almost 2 years ago, more than a year there are plenty of Intel Macs available and... Still, VPN Tracker is only PARTIALLY supported on Intel. That is, kernel extensions are Intel and VPN tracker application itself is still PowerPC and has to run through Rosetta. That means SUPER long startup times. That means it is also SUPER slow. That means that it also takes about 10 times more memory than it should have. That means that your battery life will be decreased by quite a lot, if you use it on a run. About 6 e-mails I've sent to Equinux asking when a full support for Intel Macs will be available have gone unanswered. All this leads to the only conclusion: I think it's too expensive for this kind of product. Personally I'm looking for an alternative. [alert admin]

Crashes right away

Just to update this: Crashes on both Leopard 10.5.2 and 10.5.3, and reboot didn't help at all.

Yes, it does

I have been usingt 4.0.1 for quite awhile now and have backed up my entire DVD colletion without a single problem. The registration process is a bit weird, though, but once you get through it - everything works like a charm! Video quality is very good, and ability to deselect unnecessary content is very useful (Roxio Popcorn, for example, does not allow to deselect unnecessary content). Not sure why would I need to upgrade to 4.0.2,…

Not a full usenet reader

Forgot one more thing: 3) If a message you post to a newsgroup contains images - it gets the charset screwed up completely. I usually have KOI8-R as default message charset, and when I post a message - it becomes UTF-8 and then Unison is unable to correctly display the message (it tries to still display it as KOI8-R, even though the message has UTF-8 in the headers).

Good. Possible to put in dock?

Why do you need to manually switch CPU settings when you switch from power supply to a battery, when Mac OS X does it automatically???

Why would anyone want to pay for this?

My understanding is that if a feature is added and advertised - it has to work. If it doesn't - what does it tell you? I pretty much feel like I have just thrown away 25 bucks, because it's not doing what it said it would. But then again, 25 bucks for a shell, which doesn't do anything other than executing GPL-licensed command line utilities? WeatherPop is an original work from the ground up -…
