Transmission 1.00 (Mac OS X)

Hold off the upgrade

uPnP is still not working with 0.96 (D-Link GamerLounge). Rolled back to 0.93 - so far the best version, in my opinion. Getting 10-100 times faster speeds with 0.93. Other than that, overall a great BitTorrent client, highly recommended, but only older versions. Latest versions seem to be screwed up mostly :( [alert admin]

VPN Tracker 5.0 (Mac OS X)

Buy-buy, VPN Tracker

Intel Macs have been out for two years, but Equinux still didn't manage to produce a Universal version of VPN tracker utility - only kernel extension. The utility that loads the extension and established connection was still PowerPC, so it normally takes about 20-30 seconds to launch it. Now, after two years, Leopard comes along. VPN Tracker 4 is not compatible with Leopard, and instead of making it compatible, Equinux releases VPN Tracker 5. Nearly a month after Leopard's release, and at least half-a-year since early betas of Leopard became available to developers. VPN Tracker 5 requires you to purchase a new license. What? After 2 years of doing what? There were a few releases of version 4, but mostly minor ones. So after two years of waiting for a completely Universal version we get a "rewritten" version, which costs additional money, and no way to get around it. The funny thing is that the new version, while Universal binary at last, still takes just as much time to launch as the PowerPC version. So no, I for one am not upgrading, thank you very much. I've reconfigured our VPN gateway to use L2TP-over-IPSEC and simply use native Mac OS X support for it. Works like a charm, and I don't have to pay to become a persistent beta-tester of VPN Tracker. Connect360 3.2.3 (Mac OS X)

Works fine, but...

... what's the deal with the new release every day??? And no "What's new" at all... :( Why there's new releases every day? What changed from the previous release? Same goes for the developer's website: no news whatever. [alert admin]

VPN Tracker 4.9.1 (Mac OS X)

Keep looking for something else...

I've been using VPN tracker for quite awhile. It was OK for some time, while there was no Intel support. Then... Intel support has been announced almost 2 years ago, more than a year there are plenty of Intel Macs available and... Still, VPN Tracker is only PARTIALLY supported on Intel. That is, kernel extensions are Intel and VPN tracker application itself is still PowerPC and has to run through Rosetta. That means SUPER long startup times. That means it is also SUPER slow. That means that it also takes about 10 times more memory than it should have. That means that your battery life will be decreased by quite a lot, if you use it on a run. About 6 e-mails I've sent to Equinux asking when a full support for Intel Macs will be available have gone unanswered. All this leads to the only conclusion: I think it's too expensive for this kind of product. Personally I'm looking for an alternative. [alert admin]

Unison 1.6.3 (Mac OS X)

Not a full usenet reader

1) No way to cancel a posting, so if you've sent erroneous message to a newsgroup - you're screwed. 2) No 'Sent Messages' - the only place where messages you've posted are stored is... the newsgroup itself. Overall, personally I see no reason to pay 25 bucks for this, unless all you need is to browse por^H^H^H images ;) from alt.binaries... [alert admin]

Speed Download 3.0.13 (Mac OS X)

Reingeneered? Again???

Geez, each time there's update for SD - it's been completely re-written... I start getting the impression that it just keeps being so poorly 'engineered' that it has to be 'completely re-engineered' each time... :D Is it the case? Honestly - does anybody truly believe it's been completely re-engineered for every minor version update? For some reason I find it hard to believe... Anyway, this version appears just as good as any previous, IMHO. Exactly why it needs to be completely re-engineered is a complete mystery to me :) Good piece of software, anyways. Recommended! Snapz Pro X 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Overpriced

While the product is pretty good, specifically its video recording feature, I don't believe it worth $70 - it simply can't be that Tiger is only twice more complex and useful software than Snapz Pro (Tiger costs $130, Snapz Pro - $70, compare what each one can do, how much work and effort it took to develop each, et cetera). Also, considering how often you need to use the desktop movie recording - certainly not the best deal. I would think that $$35-40 would be the reasonable price for it, which I'd pay, but not $70. MPEG2 Works Advanced 4.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Why would anyone want to pay for this?

1) Can only decode ac3 to stereo (even though doesn't mention it when selecting the option). 2) Can't demux VOB files which were joined from a couple of smaller ones by itself - getting about 20-30 small files of various kinds (mp2, m2v et cetera) when there should only be two tracks: one m2v and one ac3. 3) Too dumb to draw a real progress indicator - only draws a spinning gear, which means absolutely nothing. Often hangs while spinning it. If you can terminate the process of what it was doing - the spinning continues. Overall, MPEG Streamclip does the same thing, but for free and at least shows a real progress indicator. [alert admin]

Just to update this: Crashes on both Leopard 10.5.2 and 10.5.3, and reboot didn't help at all.

Yes, it does

I have been usingt 4.0.1 for quite awhile now and have backed up my entire DVD colletion without a single problem. The registration process is a bit weird, though, but once you get through it - everything works like a charm! Video quality is very good, and ability to deselect unnecessary content is very useful (Roxio Popcorn, for example, does not allow to deselect unnecessary content). Not sure why would I need to upgrade to 4.0.2,…

Not a full usenet reader

Forgot one more thing: 3) If a message you post to a newsgroup contains images - it gets the charset screwed up completely. I usually have KOI8-R as default message charset, and when I post a message - it becomes UTF-8 and then Unison is unable to correctly display the message (it tries to still display it as KOI8-R, even though the message has UTF-8 in the headers).

Good. Possible to put in dock?

Why do you need to manually switch CPU settings when you switch from power supply to a battery, when Mac OS X does it automatically???

Why would anyone want to pay for this?

My understanding is that if a feature is added and advertised - it has to work. If it doesn't - what does it tell you? I pretty much feel like I have just thrown away 25 bucks, because it's not doing what it said it would. But then again, 25 bucks for a shell, which doesn't do anything other than executing GPL-licensed command line utilities? WeatherPop is an original work from the ground up -…
