What's new in 3.5.2? - iTunes Plus files can be opened. - Localizations updated. - Audio playback of a file stops when closing its window. - Pitch and Tempo filter's duration field more accurate. - Saving over an existing preset no longer closes filter dialog box. - Auto Start/Stop Recording now stops playback/recording before showing dialog box. Nisus Writer Express 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Ready for Prime Time!

I've been using Nisus Writer Express (and before that, Nisus Writer Classic) to write every day for years. Although I still miss the NW Classic ability to set my own TWO CHARACTER key commands (as in command-HL for Highlight), the biggest productivity blocker has finally been removed. Version 2.1 allows long documents of several hundred pages to be scrolled through as if they were of a more reasonable length. Thank you! I no longer need to break my longer projects up into chunks, and I look forward to writing my next book as a single document. Searches will be much easier. No, I won't be able to dump Word, yet. My publisher likes to use revision tracking in editing process of a book. However, during the most difficult part, the creation of text, NWE is making my job easier. Before too long, I expect it to be everything (and more) that NW Classic was. Keep up the good work! [alert admin]

Nisus Writer Express 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Narrowing the Gap with NW Classic

I used the classic version of Nisus Writer for many, many years. In fact, for quite a while, the only reason I kept OS9 on my disk was to run Nisus. While the initial release of NW Express left a lot to be desired, the incremental updates made much improvement. I wront the bulk of a 240 page, 140,000 word book on NWX with minimal problems. The 2.0.1 version of NWX takes a huge step towards meeting the refinement of NW Classic and surpasses it in some areas (like the table tool). The paragraph styles were much needed as was the return of the Nisus New File where you can define to your needs all of the parameters of new documents. The feature that I, personally, miss the most from NW Classic is the ability to define multi-character keyboard shortcuts. I'd love to make command-HL the shortcut for the cool, new highlight feature. NWX is still too sluggish to be workable with my full 240 page document, so I'll keep using a separate file for each chapter of my current book. No biggie. As far as Word compatibility is concerned, I have yet to have a single client experience any trouble opening the RTF files I send to them. When I'm at the stage of a project where tracking changes becomes important, I'm forced to use Word since, like it or not, it is the industry standard. However, for all of my actual writing NWX is my primary tool. Like the best applications, it stays out of my way and allows me to concentrate on my writing. [alert admin]

Belkin UPS Bulldog 3.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Memory leak/processor hogging gone

Although upsd always shows up as hung in Activity Monitor, the Bulldog app responds to power failures. The memory leak and processor hogging that made previous versions of Bulldog unusable, unless the computer was restarted every day, is no longer an issue. So, Bulldog now seems to be a better option than the UPS controls built into Panther. The manual is laughable. For example, the description for the Voltage Sensitivity menu option is "Adjust the UPS voltage sensitivity." OK, so what do the three options actually do. Some of us like to know these things. What exactly is reduced? Is it a percentage adjustment or a fixed number of volts? Really, I'd like to know. How about examples of when you'd want to change these settings? Just a thought. Belkin UPS Bulldog 3.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Activity Monitor says UPSD is hung

Even after a restart, upsd is still reported as hung by Activity Monitor. I haven't run Bulldog long enough to see if the memory leak is gone. So, I'm not rating this version yet. The interface ickiness is gone, though. [alert admin]

Crashing

Quite frequently, Halo will crash when I try to connect to a network game. Also, changing settings often has the same result. MDD 867 w/ 1.2 gig of ram. [alert admin]

Eudora X 6.0 (Mac OS X)

Eudora and Panther...

don't play well together. Almost every time I try to send mail, Eudora crashes. So, I've had to set up my Wallstreet here on my desk beside my MDD 867 just to send my mail. Any betas soon? Hello, Qualcomm, is this thing on? [alert admin]

Belkin UPS Bulldog 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Memory Leak

The memory leak has been slowed. Now, after two days of uptime, the upsd (ups deamon) only takes 116 MB instead of over 400 MB. However, after this amount of time, upsd uses 80+ percent of my 867 dual processors for a couple of seconds every minute or so--which plays hell with typing, causing dropped characters. Back to the drawing board, again... [alert admin]

Excellent Program - Reasonable Price

I don't find the price steep at all. I've used it for over a year and have found it tremendously valuable. I think that $40 for something I use every day is quite reasonable--especially when considering the many updates it's been through.

Really try LaunchBar

To launch Photoshop: command-space (no waiting necessary) ap return Photoshop launches. That's right five keystrokes total, and I don't need to wonder where my pointer is on my dual monitor system. If "ap" doesn't bring Photoshop forward, you can train LaunchBar to use it. After three uses, the shortcut sticks. When I find something I want to train it to, I just do it three times in succession. Easy-peasy.

Excellent upgrade for NWX

Have you set up a Nisus New File? This is where you can set your paper size, prefered fonts and styles. Save it as ~/Library/Application Support/Nisus Writer/Nisus New File.dot. This template will now be what every new file you open is based on. e

Can't update

I'm glad you tried updating. I was too much of a coward to do it out of fear of rendering my router inoperable... I'll just keep downloading the file every couple of days and hope they fix it.
